the headlines in the papers are a disgrace.  NEVER before has a player with 2 year left on a contract had the headline:  "talks put off til the end of season".  that phrase always refers to a player having one season left on their contract.  the casual observer (idiot) that doesnt read the article will look at that and say - oh Hogan is gone.   just puts pressure on hogan and is negative publicity for the Dees.  The media always kicks clubs when they are down (aside from the bombers).  when we win a few they'll be the first to jump on the bandwagon saying we will make the top 4.

And they are well aware that while they sell papers, get clicks, get ratings today, that it will be a long time before they are proved right or wrong. The goldfishbowl public won't remember what they were told 12 months from now.

We need to be bigger than one player . Take the pressure off the kid make a statement by saying we are happy to wait until they are ready to talk . I would also propose a deal that would not be super long term as he doesnt know if he will be back in w.a sometime . Offer a deal that takes him to the free agency window and hopefully he stays after that.  Good will and open dialogue and if he goes he goes . If something goes wrong and he wanted to be traded it would be messy as compensation would massive .

If he hasn't signed by round 6 2017 he's gone I wouldn't sign he only just extended it , he's got more credibility in his little finger than Scully but if he does go we hold the cards .

On another matter he looked awesome at training today.

Its just a disappointing thing that we're all now focusing on this, after a week of optimism following the intra-club last week.  Demonland has been a lovely place to visit for the last couple of weeks, now this kinda casts a shadow over everything.

Of course Hogan shouldn't sign until  (1) CBA is decided, (2) he's further into his current contract and (3) he sees how things are shaping up with the list, gameplan, etc.  Unfortunately realism doesn't really come into football analysis analysis and media anymore, and the good press that MFC has been receiving recently will be overshadowed by this speculation.  Every MFC article this year will have a Jesse Hogan footnote.

Ps. He'll stay.

It really is annoying isn't it. There is another thread more about his but it sucks so bad that in this day and age it is impossible to just enjoy having a gun player in your side, because the landscape has gotten to this point where there is constant threat of players selling out. When Jesse has a great game I just can't ignore the elephant in the room and it really tempers my enjoyment of it. I try to ignore it but it is there looming always

I'm intrigued why ?

I think you're giving us more thought than the wider footy public does.

It is what it is, and it's not new. It's just more pronounced these days. I try not to worry about it. When they were the red and blue they matter. When they don't then they don't.

Put it this way: every trade season we all cry out that we want to poach an A grader from somewhere. We went hard after Dangermouse and no-one cried that we were ruining the game by doing so. I don't see anyone whining that we are unethical chasing Dion. Quite the opposite... we all rub our hands in glee.

Anyway, we'll offer Jesse a very good contract and he'll accept it on the basis he likes his teammates and the direction of the club, or reject it because he doesn't see anything worth getting fired about... or he might think we are a great club and loves his mates here but simply wants to go home... either way money wont be the issue because I reckon we'd match whatever offer he was given, if only for the marketing angle.

On the same note, if and when he does re-sign and bucks the trend of "putting talks on hold = gone", then to the casual observer (idiot), it will make us look good.

Honestly, it wouldn't be Demonland without the occasional mild freakout. We do support the Demons after all.

Ps. I think he'll stay too.

If/when he does sign during the next off-season no trend will have been bucked.

You rarely hear of other player's contracts being discussed two seasons out.  There'd be other players in Hogan's situation right now.  Some players only sign on for two years, which is the current length.

He might buck a trend if he signs post season in 2017, but not this year.

I reckon he's gone.

It's hard not to feel that way...

I would like to know how many stay when they say they will decide at seasons end - close to 0% I would think. Hard not to be cynical.

we all do realise hes saying end of this season...and he's STILL contracted for the one after !!!

Sure, but most of the cynicism can be saved for another year, can't it? That seems the logical way to go about in this scenario. He has two years to run on a contract FFS.

Soon we'll be stressing over a player signing for 5 years instead of 6.

But this is 2 years out. It makes sense to hold if. if after this season he puts talks on hold for another year....then we panic!

There are actually players who have "put contract talks on hold" in the last year of their contract and eventually re-signed. Cloke springs to mind, but I am certain there are another couple as well.

The fact he has 2 seasons on his contract is a big factor, so we are 12 months away from having to really worry about this.

And to others who are getting their knickers in a knot, everything I read from the media actually seems to hint that they think he will eventually re-sign with us.

I genuinely hope you are all right. Negativity comes with territory from being a fan since 1965. I must admit to be really excited by our current list and football department. It is reassuring having PJ around to handle negotiations.

Why wouldn't he wait until the end of the season?  I would.  If he decides to go, a trade at the end of the year would need to be massive.  Having said that, he's happy here, he's made some great friends at the club and there's no reason to be pessimistic.  Move on and enjoy the season.

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.
