Brendan McCartney

If McCartney is the bees knees, why are we so keen to offload Watts & Toumpas? Wouldn't it be better to give McCartney a couple of years to work his magic with them?

How do you know McCartney isn't the one suggesting they're moved on ?

Tony Abbott would have a greater chance of being appointed.

Nah, he wouldn't see out the full term of his contract.

Unfortunately I think the Bombers board might be thinking they need a 'sacrificial lamb' for a few years but preferably one that has experience and great development capabilities. Worsfold's coaching pedigree is unquestionable but I reckon the task of turning the Bombers around would be too great and ultimately result in a negative outcome for him, the players and club in general.

Macca has been targeted for a specific purpose in my opinion. Not really a stop-gap type position but strategically, he's the type of man to navigate the next few years considering how tough they will be.

Because what they lack can't be taught.

Because what they lack can't be taught.

Does that mean they can do everything that can be taught?

What does that even mean? Maybe I should lie down.

Although Beveridge takes all the credit publicly, in footy circles I'm certain McCartney's influence in laying the foundations for their success is well respected.

Maybe they're trying to get us back for stealing there coach in waiting?

I don't know if it's been mentioned before but PJ (at the B&F) emphatically said to McCartney "the players and the club NEED you."

Maybe this has been known or feared about since Hird was sacked/resigned.

He received plenty of praise after just one H&A season so let's hope he sticks around and gets to spen a proper pre season with the players.

We may not need to worry 'Steve': '...West Coast Eagles' great Glen Jakovich - a former teammate and close friend of Worsfold - has declared Worsfold will join the Bombers, with Guy McKenna his deputy'. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-trade-news-its-now-patrick-dangerfields-decision-say-waiting-geelong-cats-20150919-gjqe2t.html#ixzz3mAfVgWB9

But I'm a bit worried that Crows or Blues might pinch Macca as their 'mentor coach' ala Roos/Goodwin.

Keeping fingers crossed and waiting nervously...

I think this will be McCartney's role once Roosy moves out of the FD.

No.

So what’s the problem then? Just teach them stuff that can be taught and they’ll be fine.

Mmmmmm.... Sacrificial Lamb ggggggarrrrhhhh.

Seriously?

CB is trying to say that the stuff that cannot be taught is the intrinsic aspects to the best footballers - hardness and desire for the contest, and to want to relentlessly compete for the footy.

I’m being a bit of a smartarse, but I’m trying to say that all players can be taught enough to make them good footballers. Maybe there are some intangibles that can’t be taught, but that doesn’t mean those players are doomed. Maybe the only thing that would stop that is if a player isn’t willing to learn. Now THAT is something that can’t be taught.

'Maybe there are intangibles'?

They are pretty, bloody tangible - I just watched the AFL Canberra Finals today and every grade it was the team that had the most blokes committed in the most contests that won the games.

Look at the Prelims next week - those will be on another plane of existence to where our team is at - those teams are full of players that love the contest and thrive when the footy is at its hardest.

Our list hasn't been defined by that for my 20 years of closely watching the Demons.

Viney, Brayshaw, Hogan, et al will hopefully bring us to that higher plane - and it won't be their skills and talent - it will be their hardness in the contest and commitment to the footy.

footy isnt that hard is it...really..am just asking...you. ..or anyone.

Its a contest !!

For anyone who still doesnt get the intrinsic inner "something" that defines leadership and someone who has the right stuff vs ones that are NQR, I'll give you 4 names for starters...

Selwood

Hodge

Jones

Fyfe

Hoping we might be able to add the Hulk (and others) to our list at some point

Leadership isn't taught. It is nurtured

Leadership is in the DNA equation....

i very much agree. Some can...some cant. Even of those that can, not all do.

Make no mistake; we'd be much poorer for his absence.

I also think the likelihood of him moving on is minimal this year.

The Dons ego will make them go after someone high profile eg Worsfold. Doubt they would like a quiet achiever like McCartney.

I could see him maybe leaving for a top job, if it even still appeals.

I can't see him leaving right now for a support role.

It's just not him.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
