How would you have done it?

Players in this environment have no viable choice but to lie in my opinion.

I tend to think player re-signings should be confidential during the year and all announced at seasons end. For example this year we wouldn't find out if Garland had re-signed or not until after the GF.

Understand that but I would have said "I will make a decision after this season or I want to concentrate on my footy".

But I wouldn't say I love the club, my team mates etc etc bla bla bla.

Keep the standard response to anyone who asks the question and not say one thing to someone and something else to another.

And lets not forget he was just a kid at the time (still is really).

And that is where a well seasoned manager comes in.

It is no great surprise to anyone that if you are prepared to let your contract negotiations go into the last season or you put them on hold that the club will put pressure on you to re-sign and it will be played out in the media.

A manager worth half his salt would advise his client that this will happen and instruct him that he should not address the contract situation except with a simple response " " I won't discuss my contract. I will address this at seasons end, I just want to concentrate on my footy".

If we believe , as many do that Scully signed well in advance of the press conference - what the hell was the thinking behind his managers decision to allow him to do that presser ?????? What the hell was he thinking when he allowed his client to say " there have been no approaches". What the hell was his thinking allowing Scully to say " i want to be one club player and anticipate that this will be the case" if in fact he already signed elsewhere.

I don't give a rat's behind about players coming and going and taking great offers. Good for them I say. I don't like being misled so you can imagine my thoughts on outright lies. Especially when it is not necessary.

It is way past time to move on

this is the point. why do we dwell on a player that's long gone. same with James Frawley, Mitch Clark etc. they have made their decisions right or wrong. you don't need to respect their decision but gee just let it go. we now have a professional sport where players will move for money and better opportunities. this does not always sit easily with personal integrity and the way players and their agents conduct themselves but that is the modern game. big money will always corrupt people and organizations. in the wider world, employees seeking more money and better opportunities in their respective professional fields are not normally up front with their boss or employer. and in the same way employers are not up front with employees who are about to be axed. there is always a level of clandestine activity by employee and employer. no-one is a cleanskin when personal ambition or money is involved

The OX on SEN hinted that we might make a play for Scully after his contract expired.

orange boy tom

lol would be hilarious if Scullys plan all along was to go milk GWS of all their $$$ and to come back to the MFC

Problem is he just hasnt kicked on as a player . Great gut runner, but for all the running he does he should be getting a lot more touches and doing more damage

And that is where a well seasoned manager comes in.

Not just a seasoned manager nut but a set of decent parents would have helped too.

Can't say I would ever use my child to get a plum job.

dwellers gotta be dwellers, hemmers. it's human nature. it's why so much of the world is tribal if you scratch the surface.

Understandable he took up the offer of a life time. Understandable he had to lie. Unforgivable for malingering his way through the season.

. Unforgivable for malingering his way through the season.

You mean he was opening the bowling for Sri Lanka when he was meant to be playing footy for us ?

Love to reminisce.

Days of betrayal and suffering... long past now.

Poor old Tom

Lay off him, he is just doing what we all dream of doing.

Getting paid bucket loads of money to do sweet FA.

There are about 6 gun young players out of contract at the end of 2015 at GW$

Fascinating to watch how many bolt out of the joint soon as they can....

just like col?

I personally haven't got over the way Ron left the club. Best and Fairest, and Premiership captain one moment, we are the navy blues the next. Meanwhile I'm stuck at Richmond station for 50 years watching the 2pooz pass by.

I hope the club has a few dollar sitting under treloar and shiels noses,

And Devon Smith.

It would funny watching people back out of everything they've said for years before.

I'd absolve him 28 minutes into the last quarter of the Grand Final when we were 13 goals in front.

Don't tell us what we are allowed to think/write/read/discuss. We don't need your permission.

not anymore, at least, I suspect.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
