I could have put this in the Robbie Flower thread, but i didn't want it to get "lost" in the trade arguments etc.

A work colleague's brother use to play high school/junior footy with Robbie Flower (Bob). She brought in this photo he had of the team, with them all in it. She said the boys (those still alive) from this team, or some of them are catching up for a beer and a yarn in honour of the great man in the coming weeks.

His nickname back then was "Jelly", for obvious arms and legs reasons. Said he was an absolute gun back then, with a body like his that went against all normal VFL conventions. Anyways thought you guys might be interested in seeing it and hearing of his relatively unheard of school nickname of 'Jelly.' Feel free to share it with any other Robbie Flower admirers:

I remember a friend of mine played an interschool match and lined up on Robbie . He said Robbie had about 50 touches for the game and he got 2 kicks and one of those was in the ankle.

Would that be the Glenn Giles, brother of Peter who played 2 games for us in 1981.

Born the year after Robbie so time frame is right.

You never really hear anything on these boards about Peter Giles - he looked like a wildman when he first started - he could play though

One of our better players during the Flower era nutbean who suffered nasty achilles and knee injuries which restricted his game tally to 124.

Also another of our boys to be hit from behind by the mongrel thug Matthews.

I remember that hit. Forward flank/forward pocket Punt Rd end MCG southern stand. Lined him up with no regard for the ball. Matthews only intention was to take Giles out. A thug act of the first order.

My brother and I saw it live too, was a coward act. Giles went back on in the forward line after he "recovered" from memory.

Thanks for the pic TSFKA

I vaguely remember Alan Jarrott carrying out some retribution on the thug #3

Middle row second from the right Andrew Chisholm was also recruited to MFC form Ormond Amateurs along with Steven Smith (200 game player). Chis played Under 19's and Reserves in 1974 and 1975 but did not play a senior game and returned to Ormond in the amateurs after his time at Melbourne ended (DemonWiki). Another friend has a photo of her year 11 class at Murrumbeena high in 1972. It is easy to recognise the bespectacled Robbie Flower.

You must've been a row in front of me MB. Turning point in the game - we were on a roll - about to hit the front I think - BANG - down the other end - Goal to them. No free, fifteen or report.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
