We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Overrated players we must not entertain during trade week

I'd entertain Hoskin-Elliot if the trade was right, but Tomlinson is bog ordinary. He's one of those guys that looks like a footballer, but doesn't play like a particularly good one.

Not sure Tomlinson would cost a second rounder, has played plenty of NEAFL this year. I was more thinking something like a future second rounder and maybe Garland for both Tomlinson and Hoskin-Elliot. Not sure how the points system works this year, but Mahoney might be able to wrangle another deal where we swap some picks to help GWS out fit in what they need to do as part of a deal.

Tomlinson keeps a lot of value as a tall, Carlton seem to always be keen on him and he's often linked to Essendon. I think Carlton offered up a pick around 20 last year and got very close to getting the deal done.

WHE was living up to his draft pick back in 2014, not sure what's gone wrong with him with injury and others going passed him over the last 2 years. Does he have the tank to play as a wingman? If he's just a half forward we might stay clear

I'm merely thinking depth swingman who's a good age. Would be good to have one more big body who can play full back when needed.

Think both have struggled this year, not 100% of the exact reasons as I don't follow GWS that closely, just watch a few games etc. That's why I think we could possibly get them relatively cheaply, and don't GWS have to cut their total list size again this year? (Not 100% on that).

If we get Hurley, a big 'if' I know, but, if we get Hurley, one of Frost or Omar will become depth. I think we have better needs to be trading for at this stage. The midfield (despite all the buzz after the terrific performance against Hawthorn) still needs reinforcements and depth. I'd also go Hurley or stick with the young guys we have playing at the moment.

Oh yeah, if we get Hurley then everything changes. We can do more than one trade though, we don't have to focus all our energy one on superstar trade. Tomlinson and H-E would be a quick and easy trade to facilitate given our good relationship with GWS I feel. Get it done early, then we go after a big fish.

They certainly have a tight salary cap and might have to cut list size as well. The issue is with 10 Victorian clubs circling I'm not sure it's that easy to get a good deal. Obviously if you get the player to pick you that makes it easier but I think GWS have had so many draft assets and players over the years that they are in a strong position to potentially knock back deals. The points system was a nice way for clubs to do win-wins and I don't think it's changed yet, although every club will be out to use the loophole this year, which means GWS will benefit more and clubs looking to move up in the draft won't have it so easy.

I'm starting to wonder if Hurley is going to be worth the hype.

Especially if T.Mac stays..

I'm always keen on that 'second best' category, when it comes to value. Used to describe it as 'give me Sidebottom over Pendlebury and Stephen Hill over Fyfe'. Right now I'd describe it as Smith before Rioli.

As for overrated - I'm not completed sold on the value of Hurley, though I totally respect that he is a high level footballer. I just think the price would be higher than the value. I'd be very wary of just about any player being offloaded by Roachmond or Fleamantle.

I'm quietly glad that we didn't pay through the nose to get the likes of Treloar, Adams and Greenwood (eat it, Collingwood), or Higgins, Dal Santo and Waite (good players, sure, but oh look... how unpredictably that turned out).

I do wonder if at some point once the excitement fades, Mark Blicavs might actually be the player we could get the most value out of. Solves the relief ruck dilemma without stealing a spot from the young forwards. Has been in poor form recently, though it might take another year for his trade and salary value to diminish. As a creditable role-player rather than a 'star', what a perfect fit he could be.

I've thought about him. If we can get someone either with above average speed and/or endurance to play as the 2nd ruck role we could leave Hogan, Watts and Weideman in place. Blicavs playing the atypical wing/half forward/midfield to ruck role would certainly be that! Otherwise a Stanley style 200cm crumbing forward would be handy -  the speed to get out of the way of the other big blokes and pressure/chase is what I'm looking for there. We had one like that in Fitzy but his injuries and shonky skills saw him let go.

Blicavs is struggling this year but won Geelong's B+F last year and I get the feeling Chris Scott really rates him. Just one to monitor for now.

I agree. I just don't rate Tomlinson. ;)

GWS players, especially ones who can't break into the regular 22, that's where it's at.

We have a good trade relationship with them too.

Continue to build and improve our depth.

Personally I'm disappointed that Coniglio's had such a good season. He seemed a bit on the outer at the end of last season and I was hoping he'd be a chance this time around.

Yeah like Marchbank too as far as trade targets go, just think Tomlinson is a better age for our current needs.

Tomlinson is a fringe player 'stuie', he's on his way to Carlton.

Forget about him, from what I've heard we're not interested.

Carlton & St Kilda were the only clubs to show interest last trade period.

Yep, as I said earlier, would only be looking at him as a depth player to cover injuries/gaps at either end when needed. Definitely wouldn't be interested if the price was too high.

Ty Vickery.  He will be shopped around, and I seriously hope we don't buy it.

I'll go even further - other than Martin, there isn't any player at Richmond that I would like at our club.  This thread should almost be dedicated to the Richmond Football Club.

Please no Vickery looks like Tartan plays like Jane. So maybe 4 our women's team.

If we target any, they have to be able to break into our 22 as well and it is getting harder to do.

Would you swap him for Grimes, I would.

Not necessarily. We need to improve our depth as well. With players like Terlich, Michie, Newton, Grimes etc all pretty much gone, if we're bringing in guys better than them, or at least with more potential than them, then we're improving the list. We can sometimes get caught up in the big fish type trades and forget that we need to look at the list holistically.

To be honest, Red, I don't think I would.  That said, I could be letting my opinion/thoughts of Vickery cloud my judgement.

When I typed that original post I was actually thinking of that exact trade.  Problem with him, I reckon Richmond would want more than what he is worth, so don't know if a Grimes/Ty trade would get done (they would want more).

I hear that Rance guy goes alright. But after him and maybe Riewoldt I think you're right

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
