Port Adelaide's rise over the last three years has been impressive to watch. It gives me great hope that with the right coach in place who connects with his players at an emotional level like Hinkley has and Roosy has started we can look ahead with real hope.

At a CEO level, there's no doubting that Jackson has been spectacular for the MFC in the short time he's been in control although it would be very reasonable to say Keith Thomas' efforts at the Power should be be reflected on in the same light.

But from a strategic POV, Kochie has been the real maestro and I believe the key in engaging the supporters and whipping up frenzies with simple ideas like "Never Tear Us Apart" as their unofficial anthem.

Let's face it, McGuire has done the same at the Pies and done it well.

As much as Glen Bartlett seems like a nice bloke, from what I've seen of his public appearances and talking up the MFC, I'm not convinced he's got the drive, charisma and leadership to devise and champion a strategy like Koch and McGuire can. Is this because they're celebrity's? If so, then I believe our next step is to identify a similar person in that industry and capitalise on our current upwards trend like Port Adelaide have shown and led the way before us.

I know many people don't believe a President needs to be frequently seen as promoting the club but Koch and McGuire and their respective clubs say otherwise.

Its a team effort. I reckon most of us would be hard pushed to name the president of at least a dozen or more clubs. Its just that Eddie and Kochie (and Brayshaw) have media profiles aside from the Club President role which they use to their Club's advantage.

You are right, our President isn't high profile. But he is new to the job, the media and the AFL. I feel what we need most from him right now (which he is doing) is a steady handy on the rudder and support for PJ and PR.

Love the work Kochie had done for Port. A really down to earth bloke who is all about family at Port Adelaide.

I reckon as sad as it is that Kennett is correct, I would suggest he is bang on the money when he said that the board is not really PJ's boss and he is more the one who is giving orders. He would swear black and blue that this is not the case and if it were, I would 9 out of 10 cases be against it. However, this is the one time I am for it. For too long, the old school tie set and the MFC groupies and hangers on have reckoned they have known better than the established football people at our clubs and usually their calls have been grade A horse poo. They have been sidelined and I would suggest that PJ has taken over the commercial side of the club, Roosy has taken over the football side with Josh Mahoney being the conduit between both. I would say the board has been told to butt out.
You know what? Besides Bartlett's brain fade about Collins St. and the NY Yankees style sign at the airport (which was latched onto by some here), it's been nice to not have some George from Blackadder style ponce from the board polluting the airwaves with their opinions on what is wrong with the team this year. Once the foundations are in place, then a more proactive board can be put in place but until then, Roosy, PJ and Mahoney need some clean air to work in unimpeded.

With both Koch & McGuire, the public gets seduced by their high profile media presence. In reality, it's a lot less about what they say & a lot more about what they do. Both have set & driven standards throughout their organisations to make them successful

With regard to our board, I don't really care if our president is largely silent or if our CEO is calling the shots. His instructions from the board should simply be "fix this fricking mess". And then let him get on with it

He's done well in part because his club has focused on things that, on the surface, don't appear to be critical. I.e the state of the Change rooms. From memory, it's an All Black philosophy of ensuring that everything is in order and, for the life of me, I cannot remember the phrase used.

i tend to agree about this... Though considering the way he was appointed, I'd say the AFL is giving the orders rather than PJ... Apart of me is glad that they've taken over, but the other part of me is worried about their intensions...

Kochie is nothing without the Port CEO, Darren Burgess and Ken Hinkley.

Give me a board with good governance to meet long term objectives rather than whatever Kochie is.

We simply don't know about Kochie until Port start losing, that's when you judge a President.

I was not a fan of the old Port Adelaide.

When Williams, The Chad and Treadrea were there. I didn't like their footy ethos.

It has changed a lot recently. I was barracking hard for them last night. I said somewhere else that their fitness and conditioning department has performed miracles.

reckon you may be right, and just maybe this is how it should Be. gettin on with business, & not politics.

Think the move away from Alberton to the Adelaide Oval came at the right time. Corresponded to a new coach and high profile president. All the stars were in conjunction. Also their fitness Guru is top of the tree and the recruiting has been A1.

Jealous as hell. Grrrr.

Colin Carter, from memory he was on the commission for a while. He's in the background but a very good operator.

Not sure if you mentioned Garry Lyon, but the further away he stays from the club the better. Better as a supporter, not as a decision maker.

Unfortunately, Lyon is a dabbler and meddler, not a leader.

Anyway, the main role of the president is to be visibly be making sure that everyone is doing their bit, and reassuring each part of the club's communiuty that they aren't doing it alone.

The job is all about convincing supporters, staff, coaches, players, and sponsors that when they make their commitment to the club, so is everyone else.

That can be as simple as looking smug at a game, which among his other contributions is something Koch is particularly good at!

Our President is fine, we miss Jim but Bartlett is doing ok.
