Nup I thought Brett Alison and Miller are head of development and development coach.

Stone is looking after the midfield and strategy. Sharing the role in the midfiled coaching role with Ben Matthews

Stone won't be going next year. And frankly we need to keep him longer term as much as Roos or more.

Not disagreeing with you, but the question still remains about whether the Senior assistant is a new coach that we are adding to the current coaching group? or is it a replacement.

Totally agree with this statement.

Stone is far more important than many people seem to realise, which is fair enough as basically all his work is behind the scenes.

I am trying to say do we know how this senior assistant would fit into the coaching team? and is it possible that Stone intention all along (as worked out with Paul Roos and the club) was to come down for a year or two just to set things right before retiring and handing over his duties to this senior assistant?

The thing is that we are all very much so concerned with whether Paul Roos is signing for 2 or 3 years, that we might not be aware of the other aspect to the appointment that *could* be that Stone was ALWAYS planning to be here for a year or two max whilst the senior assistant is actually found.

I hadn't heard of his retirement plans. But he lives in melbourne, and was flying to Sydney.

He isn't a senior assistant at Melbourne now so not sure why a new senior assistant would have bearing on his role.

No idea about Stone but hope he stays around the Club.

You make a good point though. From memory when Longmire became the "Senior Assistant" under Roosy he stepped away from being a line coach and sat over all of them. He used to run the overview in the box while Roosy was on the boundary line dealing more with individual players. So don't have to necessarily remove a coach. Although Benny Mathews and Stoney are both midfield coaches.

I'm interested in what would happen to Rawlings. I rate him very highly and think he must be in the running as the Senior Assistant. His coaching has created a very strong backline well before Roosy arrived. Seems to be highly regarded by the players. Speaks very well when I have heard him. Has put his hand up before for a Senior Coaching job at Richmond and was overlooked and then left. I wonder if he is even putting up his hand. If he is overlooked this time will he leave.

Stone is a real rock in Roos' coaching group

Heard Brendan Bolton on Grandstand. Very impressive communicator and very good footy knowledge. Has 6 years in the Hawks system and coached Nth Hobart prior to that. Hope he is on the radar along with Luke Beveridge and Ratten.

Hawthorns way of going about innovation and development sound like just what we need.

No hes the guy that got them into a finals a couple of times and then got tossed out for a guy that was suppose to deliver them a flag.

Obviously he didn't have the support of the board also. Carlton fan are still absolutely fuming about the way he was treated and rightly so.

Ratten is the bloke who was trying to run the entire club himself out of necessity, because they had muppets in crucial positions, such as recruitment.

The blues pinched Stephen Wells right hand man on a big sum of money, then he promptly jumped ship when he found out what a terrible mess he'd walked into, where incompetent old boys were entrenched in the recruiting dept.

Ratten did a surprisingly good job with a terribly subpar list.

Malthouse was late to the party in identifying how poor the list really was.

I don't necessarily advocate Ratten as the successor, but he was a scapegoat for the failings of others at Carlton.

One, he has been a relatively successful senior coach so knows the caper. Often when a coach gets the bullet it is the end of his senior career as it usually indicates he has not cut it. However as DD notes he got them init finals but Carlton (who suffer from the same messiah complex MFC has over the years) who were hell bent on getting Malthouse in and amazingly thought he would put some shine on them and make them a flag contender. Well Ratten was more successful at the Blues than Malthouse has been - with essentially the same list. Tick.

Gets the maximum from a list. Tick

Apparently had the support of the players at the blues where he was liked and respected. Tick

He has the passion Roos has said is mandatory. Tick

Has remained directly involved in the game since he started playing. Tick

Has had 2 years as an assistant at the the Hawks under a coach many consider to be the best and has been able to witness the Hawks system firsthand. Tick.

I get the sense that unlike say Bomber Ratten would be be happy to do the 2 years as an assistant required as part of the succession plan. Tick

Is young enough that if he becomes senior coach could be in the job for a a number of years. Tick

Has coached at MFC and by all accounts did well. Tick

Perhaps he is not the most marketable of coaches but who cares.

To be honest can't think of any crosses.

I like all your positives, but perhaps being overlooked to coach when Clarkson was ill should be considered to place a "cross" against his name. Having said that, there may have been a good reason why he was oveerlooked, but it surely has to raise a flag worth considering during any due diligence investigation.

I think I can recall hearing the hawks gave the job to Bolton to give him some experience and exposure to the big job as he has aspirations to one day be the head coach at a club

They might have said it, but I don't believe it. You don't play around with genuine Premiership prospects to gift someone some experience and exposure. As it happens, it paid off for both him and the club...but I'm certain that Bolton wasn't given the job to boost his own chances for the future.

he had a 50% win record at Carlton with an average list. (that includes going 0-6 in his first season after taking over as interim coach at seasons end).

They won 15 games in 2011.

The guy can coach, and I reckon he will be even better now having spent time at the Hawks.
