Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I would not rule out Bomber Thompson at this stage. There could be a reason why Roos has not signed up as yet for a third season. MFC could be waiting to see whether Bomber recommits with Essendon in some shape or form or whether he leaves the club. If he does the latter and is interested in coaching Melbourne, I can see a scenario where he will be an assistant coach next year under Roos and coach the year after with Roos taking on a football management role with the club as mooted over the past months.

Their coaching styles are not too dissimilar. They both have a high emphasis on defence but Bomber has the score on the board in coaching sides that can use defence as a springboard of attack. He would be coaching at a time when our list will be cherry ripe to introduce a more attacking game plan.

With Roos still there I think there could not get a better coaching pair to take this team to the promise land.

So the Ling doesn't have the fire in the belly.

Move on.

Surprised at you !

Go back through all Roos comments before he signed. Its like de ja vu !

I will move on from a candidate when Roos and Co say - we have moved on.

All the talk in the press is fluff and nonsense and should be taken with a very large dose of skepticism.

Amazed at those spooked by a little bit of posturing from Ling!

Gotta milk the story for all it's worth.

He's the one.

Not sure he is the one - but waaaayyyyy too early to count him out.

the guy has never coached and he is not 100% into the idea.

We cannot afford such posturing.

Now maybe he is saying it as a smoke screen to others but i still believe Lingy needs a couple of years at TAC Level to see if it is a job he wants.

As you say, you "believe" this; but no doubt Roos can base his view on more than just believing at a distance? And maybe Ling himself can work out by some means other than a trial run in the TAC whether or not he wants the job? Your second and third statements are surely speculative assertions. We haven't got enough to base any opinion on here - but those who will make the decision presumably will have; plus anyway we trust them this time, don't we? Why not just wait with interest? It sounds like we are just talking out of nervousness.

I still think his years of playing under 2 different premiership coaches and being part of one of the greatest periods of sustained success as well as being a premiership captain during that time means a lot,

i feel he would understand a lot about values, ethics, communication, structure, player management and so on, over the two years Roosy could fill in the gaps of in box coaching and so on, plus with assistants like Rawlings, stone, Roos and so on his inexperience isn't an issue imho

i am merely basing an opinion on what Ling was quoted as saying in the AFL article.

If he is still concerned about how much time his life will be consumed by coaching then he is 50/50 on coaching as a career.

If Roos and the MFC end up hiring Ling, fine but he is far from over the line going by that interview.

People earlier in this thread had him signed up.

Ling was made captain in 2010 after Harley retired. Both had massive respect from their club and team mates, and both were clearly not the best players, nor even in the top couple in an unbelievably talented team. It seems the Cats picked the best, strong, disciplined and trust worthy player to lead their elite teams, almost regardless of talent on the field. Maxwell is similar.

Voss, Buckley and even Hird were nothing like this, they are elite players who captained for different reasons. We all struggle with grimes and want Jones as sole skipper, when clearly Grimesy has very good leadership skills, despite his kicking.

Roos is one the of the very very best coaches in decades, it would be great to have him for longer, but if not I'd rather him picking someone than us. He won't be caught out by a Neeld tough guy approach, or a Bailey players mate approach (perhaps brad Scott is similar). If he thinks Ling awesome, if he thinks Rawlings, great, maybe Dew will change his mind?

Roos advises that it needs to be a coach who has similar game styles and thinking as him = Brett Kirk

Obvious

Kirk has the experience now and has been taught by the Roos family (Roos/Longmire and R Lyon)

Lenny Hayes?????

I think the 2 premiership coach thing is a bit of spin 'Mike'. Now technically Scott is a premiership coach but the players virtually coached themselves for that one. The smartest thing Scott did, and I'm not underselling it is to not let his ego get in the way.

I still would like Ling at Melbourne in an assistant's role at least and have been calling for it for well over a year now.

edit: well actual over a couple of years now.

I've seen a few posts lately about bringing Lloyd to Melbourne and others about Royal as midfield coach, the development of our mids etc. So let me throw this one out there.

We could do a lot worse than pursue Cameron Ling to be our midfield coach next year.

When he retired he said he wanted a year away from football and would spend some time in the media before considering his next move. With the respect he holds in the football world for his ability, leadership, work ethic and not to mention he seems to be a pretty decent bloke, he would be a great addition to our coaching structure.

I see Kirk as being a genuine chance...............1 more year under Ross at Freo (as good as being coached by Roos anyway), and then has completed his 3 year stint at the Dockers come the end of 2015.

A 12 month handover with Roos who completes year 3, and away we go.

Would have already discussed with Roos the need to experience mores finals in the coaches box with Freo, and that being better for his development than breaking his contract to come to the Dees a year early.

Won't be coaching Freo with Lyon signing on for 4 years this year.

Does not say no in this interview at all...........only that he will complete his contract, and decide after that.

I've talked myself into it................Brett Kirk it is!

I see it all as fluff and nonsense.

I keep repeating this but a succession plan is not ( or shouldn't be) an iron clad, set in stone arrangement, It certainly is not that way in business.

Unless Roos picks an assistant already at the club, he will not know how the "annointed one" (Ling ? Kirk ?) will perform until he sees him close up, interacting with players and sees his match day strategies.

So the best laid plans may be that an outsider is announced as a successor and after 2 more years gets the top job. Best laid plans often don't come to fruition and I have faith that Roos and the board will not carry forward with a succession plan that they are not confident will succeed. For this reason alone, I have no problem with a two year apprenticeship with someone like a Ling or a Hayes.

I have always maintained and continue to maintain that we have zero idea how assistants actually perform. On the previous two years performances would we consider Rawlings a good assistant ? I leave those judgments to Roos as he is the only one in a position to gauge this.

I still think we'll end up with Ling as an assistant.

I think the heat got a bit out of hand as the channel 7 team reached a frenzied crescendo, and Ling has dropped a few "not even sure I want to coach" comments to preserve his sanity.

Straight out of the Roos media manipulation handbook.

Wean them onto the idea with mentioning it as a possibility, then throw cold water on it. Repeat.

Catch and release a few times over the coming couple of months.

No to Ling, big fat black line through his name. He might have the skill sets but he is untried an not fully committed. We have one chance at this and there has to be a good quality assistant with some years in the system who wants the job. If not the AFL has a significant problem.

What about Rawlings? Has the background is well liked by the players and has an existing relationship with Roos and the other assistants. I recon one of the reasons filling this role was never a huge priority last year was because there are a few quality internal candidates. Other possibles are Miller and Roos two Swams mates McPherson and Matthews.

Roos has always referred to the Swans as an example of the coach in training process working. Horse was a internal selection after 5 or so years with the Swans.

Rawlings would give us a persn with potentially 3 years under Roos or a minmum of 2. This ma also be why the club have not approached Roos to sign an extension. I personally think he will sign for a third year after his comments last night.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
