Players to target at the end of the year

Recommended Posts

Very far fetched. I just think they are doing the classic swans development and working on his speed and ball use so he develops right.

If you look at their small forward and midfield mix the reality is right now Mitchell isn't a better player than Kennedy, Jack, McVeigh, Parker, Goodes (presuming he hits form), Hannebery or Lewis Jetta.

The 4 he will push for a game are McGlynn (who's got extra versatility as a tagger, defensive forward or crumbing forward), Bird (who's in good form and has he covered for experience) and then the two young guys in Cunningham and Lloyd. Cunningham provides that extra bit pace as some of their mids are one pace and Lloyd is almost certain to be their sub and has been playing well.

If it gets to the end of the year and he hasn't played he may be angry and willing to listen to an offer. But I'm thinking he'll get in the side soon and then wont have any interest in leaving. It's hard to find a good player who can't get a game due to depth. Sydney did it with Josh Kennedy but it's a tough thing to find.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Also, on Kennedy. At Hawthorn he seemed to be played out of position a bit, mostly for his own development, but this showed up his lack of pace and at the time, decision making. There's no doubt he was a fantastic pick up though and Roos' ability to instil confidence with unchanged teams probably helped JPK's development.

Mitchell may love the swans but I am sure he is not loving sitting out watching AFL games when he dying to be playing at this level. If he does not play he cannot show how good he is, he cannot justify getting more $$'s. Buddy and Tippet taking large slabs of their salary cap and while it does seem to be working at the moment, players like mitchell and viney need to be at the bottom of the packs. If he does not get too many games then he will seriously be considering his options.

Do find it staggering he wasnt rewarded for his game. It may not be VFL standard but anyone who get over 40 possessions let alone 60 plus should be rewarded.

Who would you drop from the side to put him in?

I've seen a few posts about him after his 64 disposal game.

No disrespect to the guy, it's an absolutely outstanding effort; but has he done much else to warrant himself for us to want him apart from that game?

I rate Mitchell in the same league as Treloar, Shiel, O'Meara, Prestia, Swallow, Wines, Liberatore, Viney, and Tyson. All are more than likely to become the games future stars when they begin/ reach their primes.

If I had the option for one of the three potentially on the table (as discussed being Mitchell, Treloar, and Shiel), I would take Mitchell first just ahead of Treloar (by a bees d***), although would happily have either of those two and take the best deal possible based on other factors like later pick exchanges.

His hard at it inside game, clean hands and endurance combined with the rare dash are something to marvel.

Strange some of the opinions of Mitchell, I rate Mitchell as being as good a prospect as Jack Viney or Dom Tyson, if we could add another player like that to our ranks it would be great for the club.

Would absolutely love Mitch Duncan from Geelong.

I think Mitch is a good kid, will be a big part of their future plans. Cam Guthrie is another one I really rate, he's come on in leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. I think they will both be welded on to the Cats for a while yet so not realistic targets.

for sure, we are very little chance and probably won't even try, but in terms of the type of player I think the team needs blokes like Mitch Duncan, i'd also like to see a really classy half back added to the side, if that be Toumpas or Strauss with a bit of development or someone from outside the club.

We need some pace so I'd have a look at Gary Rohan, he could be looking for more opportunity and may already have a good relationship with Roos.

Roos and Stone would know a lot about him and whether he is worth a shot but we could do with his pace and size. Could be a really good runner off half back if he's got the tank to go. Funny you mention him, was just thinking about him today.

Both Guthrie and Duncan will champions of the club at Geelong, and will never have any desire to move.

They'd be great gets, but it simply will never happen.

Both of very high character, and the cats know that.

Huge call to say both will be champions Machsy. Good players but it will be interesting to gauge their worth when several of the Cats champs have finished up.

Would love to have Gary Rohan at the club. Cruelled by injury but was looking like a huge talent before that. Has that outside speed that we're craving IMO.

Paul Seedsman and Kyle Martin, two fringe players at Collingwood

Seedsmen, is fast, a great runner, long accurate kick, and I reckon has the potential to get a lot better.

Martin is a ball magnet, hard and tough, doesn't seem to be rated by Collingwood as much as I think he should.

could probably snare Seedsman cheaply, and Martin as a DFA

I've watched a bit of Rohan and nothing I've seen has convinced me he's a huge talent.

I'm yet to see him play one dominant or near dominant game; he's got all the kudos in the world on here but there's no evidence he's any good.

He's played 31 games with an average disposal of 8.6 and 2.4 marks and .8 goals a game, I just can't see what the fuss is.

Seedsman is a mad Collingwood supporter and you'd have to drag him out of there, plus he's pretty highly regarded there.

I use the term loosely, like most, but in terms of character, they are both of the highest calibre, and regarded as such down there.

They are the type of guys you build a club around, like Ling and Harley and Enright and Selwood before them.

Minimum of fuss, great work ethic, strong character, get the job done types.

Geelong would have to turn into Melbourne of 2013 for them to leave, and even then they're both the type of blokes to instead look to see if they were doing enough themselves to turn it around.

Can't speak about them highly enough, obviously.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
