I didn't know whether to place this here or in the cricket thread on other sports but given that "running off at the mouth" is a common occurrence in this forum (we're all guilty of it from time to time ) I thought this gem from Martin Flanagan deserved to be put right here.

Running off at the mouth a fool's game

Love this one about Brett Lee - "Lee is like a pit bull with hair gel".

And this sums up not only the Morgan/Lee incident but also what makes our game and sport at the highest level so enticing:

When I go to the footy, I always want to sit on the fence. I want to feel the pace of the play, the power of their collisions.

Only then can I begin to appreciate the skill and daring of the players.

We go to top sport to see people perform feats that are beyond our powers. To presume we are their equal in this regard, to presume we have the courage required when we do not know the magnitude nor the nature of the courage required is, as Morgan so gallantly showed us, the act of a fool.

Flanagan is a lover of sport. He sees the magnificence of fearless and determined commitment regardless of the game, the team or the player. I wish he would write a book about the season he spent at the Demons as it would give us a real understanding of the (often futile) efforts made by those that were truly committed and secure them the appreciation they deserve. There is no better writer on football than him.

Isn't that a reworking of the description applied to the former Environment Minister Ros Kelly... "a pit bull with lipstick"? And then more recently the same description was used on Sarah Palin.

Which in turn emerge from the classic 'no point putting lipstick on a pig'.

I love a little etymology now and then (entomology? well, actually I quite appreciate that too but sucks when I get them confused). Wait til you find out where the expression 'taking a crap' came from. :D

Used by Sarah Palin.

She lionised herself, and 'hockey moms,' with the joke: 'What is the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? Lipstick.'

LW Just wondering what your watering the grass with! I have my suspicions. Sacrificial wine is quite acidic you know!

Yes LW and DC what would Father Peter make of all these allegations I wonder? If I remember correctly LW Father P was a master at massage for the YCW footballers, in fact he extended your career by many seasons I believe with his magical hands, well anyway he extended something.

Yes this was very common in the Catholic Church, priests moved on at short notice to new parishes, often just one step ahead of the authorities. No doubt the need to save souls was variable, the devil could appear any where at anytime.

You show an understanding of the intricacies of the church, perhaps you can help me enlighten bbo and biffen to the sacraments

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
