Training - Wednesday 18th December, 2013

Featured Replies

I hope we start to see reward for effort, the players are working hard and one player that is pushing really hard is Jimmy Toumpas. This guy will be gem, I have seen a couple of training sessions and he is running with our elite runners, he covers a heap of ground through the drills, I just hope he gets the match day confidence through the Pre-season matches.

He also looks a lot bigger than last year (at least in photos) - check out the arms and shoulders :D

Arrived around 9:40 seeing players warm up with kick to kick
Clark not sighted
Hogan taking some snaps from the boundry then goes across to AAMI park
Salem and King walking laps
Dawes i saw him speaking to one of the fitness guys and then disappears across the road
There was a small rehab group infront of me which consisted of;
Grimes (had his nose taped up) guessing they are keeping away from contact he ran sprints and laps fine
Bail and clisby ran sprints and laps for most of the morning
Riley running fine but only at 60% but seems unimpeded and the club easy him into full training
Kent similar to Riley but seemed a bit troubled by his knee
Westrup not injured i assume just giving him an easy session
Viney i saw do one half run through and shook his head to the fitness guys , a bit of a chat then disappeared
Blease joins rehab group after warm for a serious of small sprints, twists and turns
Jamar running sprints and laps
Dom tyson, JKH Vince Tapscott warm up together and then join main training group

Main group;
split into two groups half do a rolling "scrum" picking the ball of the ground and quick hands up, roll the ball out and repeat, group is all backline players including jetta. They then practice moving the ball out of the backline with small kicks wide to the pockets and then to HBF
Other half - warm up kicking drill mostly mids/fwds

Two groups join together for small warm up drills ball rolled out, pick up quick hands. Roos vocal players become more vocal as the drill progresses.

Left around 10:40

Then into another 3 man weave handball drill, after a few minutes roos adapts the drill upon blowing his whistle players are told to kick the ball to a leading forward in either direction. Players seem to focus on the old one-two to get a player into space facing the leading forward even if it means one or two extra handballs.

Some drill extended with bigger kicks and more space between players, more gut running. JKH really pushes hard after he handballs and getting to the forward targets feet. Hunt likewise, he is super quick he seems to leap and bound over the turf. Voice picks up as the drill goes on.

Full ground drill players in groups of 4-6 one in each goal square and one on each wing. Basically circle work to start with, players share a couple of handballs kick to the next group and encouraged by roos to push hard to where the ball was kicked.

Then as the drill progresses players take marks, push back chip kicks simulating coming out of the backline. All players moved well, skills where good i really only saw 3-4 missed kicks in the time i was there. The toump was very good in the last drill, but i may have watched him more closely because of the hype around him at the moment. No one really stood above the rest, nor did anyone stand out for not keeping up.

Thanks all. Excellent reports. God knows how some take it alk in but am grateful :)

The single element im really really happy to hear is we have a coach ....who coaches... who corrects mistakes who implores effort. Who knows wtf he's doing !!!

finally might see a team in red and blue tear it up !!

Refreshing

The other major difference is the players are enjoying training. They turn up knowing they will work very hard but feel as though they are achieving something in the process rather than just running their guts out. They will be mentally much fresher this year and will probably have worked just as hard.

Interesting Frawley said Misson is responding to player feedback much more this season. I wonder what's changed?

Nice report CBD... ;-)

Long time ago.

OTH.

I guess that some think one year out of 10 is enough old.

One year of good football 9 years on the injury list still equates to being injured for most of the last 10 years.

Yes I wonder.

Now, now, Bob, let's not derail again.

Interesting Frawley said Misson is responding to player feedback much more this season.

“Misso (Dave Misson) has given more trust to the players and if the boys are a bit sore, he listens to the players about how their bodies are going. It’s been really good and hopefully I can remain on the track for the rest of the pre-season and get ready for a big year.”

I have had a coach who used to say 'the player knows their body better than any physio.'

Although, he was just trying to pressure blokes to come back too early and reject advice...

I take what Frawley is saying as that the players' programs were regimented last year and that this season they are able to end a session, spend it outside of full training, at their own behest.

The theory is that all players wish to train hard and be their best and improve on the track and so that desire will not allow them to slack off. I think it makes sense, if your leaders are setting the right example. If not, it all comes apart.

Thanks for the report. Is it just me, or does it seem like Jamar has been injured for most of the last 10 years.

injured or doing sweet F all on the field, yes

Mark Jamar - All Australian 2010.....

Is that what is referred to as "a flash in the pan"?

We arent going to recognise this lot

There iS a Santa :)

oo first ever post!

Should we be worried about Viney and Watts niggles?

Christmas break should be good for a few of the boys.

To answer you No.

We have little if any idea what the niggles are.

Welcome brandon105. Don't get sucked in by MFCSS. Repeat after me: "we are on the rise!"

A great quote from that thread:

Well I believe I actually invented the term, correct me if I'm wrong.
It is always being misdiagnosed.
It's when we obviously have something good, the MFCSS sufferer will automatically build a defense mechanism for when this good thing is inevitably taken away.
Everything at MFC is too good to be true.
Eg.
Damn Liam Jurrah was exciting in his 3rd game, too bad he'll probably go back to the Northern Territory.
Unfortunate example! Even a fan with a severe dose of MFCSS would never have guessed that Liam returning to NT would not come close to capturing the full extent of the associated drama.

That quote is from DA...

Nasher - do you have all the data from the last 6 years? Need to settle who invented this term...

I could swear I did but it is also something DA would think of...

Anyway, it's alive and well but remember - just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you...

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
