GWS Recruiting

they spoke of Cameron becoming a chb/fb

also seems that they will never be under salary cap if all these players talents come to fruition

Victorian clubs will want to pick the eyes out of the go home type and it will put gws in trade heaven

kpp, have a habit of not coming on,being injured[patton]

I have no probs with their drafting.

the fact is with them missing out on Buddy Franklin they need to increase their tall forward stocks. Although fitting so many large forwards in a team is a problem, it is a similar one to which we have now that our tall forward stocks read like Clark, Dawes, Hogan, Fitzpatrick, Gawn or Jamar or Spencer when they rest from the ruck, even Watts but he is expected to play midfield.

That being said i think they realize that Patton is not the tall forward they want, too slow and not athletic enough for the modern game and that his trade value, in my opinion, will surely decrease over the next 2 years, which means that they will want to offload him at the end of this year, and i believe western bulldogs will be the team to secure his services, for a pick within the top 10.

I don't think thats factual at all. I don't think they needed Buddy. They wanted him because he is the most marketable character in the games who is also a very good player.

To say that they have to 'replace' Buddy with another tall is nonsense.

You don't have to be Einstein to work it out.

All their low picks will be worth gold in the form of low draft picks in years to come.

They keep the best and raffle off the second best.

How do you reckon they got all their low picks this year.

Very smart thinking if you ask me.

This.

Is it just me or is the GWS recruiting team with Stephen Silvagni a butch of amateur hour hacks!

They use 2 number one draft picks on key position forwards in Patton and Boyd to slot in with an all Australian forward in Jeremy Cameron...then they select Cameron McCarthey with pick 14 who is also a KPF.

They have 2 number one draft pick midfielders in $cully and Whitfield and they use pick 2 on Kelly who plays the same role.

Most of the ball is in their defence....why wouldn't you look at Sharenberg and key backmen in the draft.

It annoys me as we get crucified for needing a "chop out" from the AFL for finances this year...but no one cares how much $$$ gets sent to GWS or how many extra priority draft picks they keep getting.

I think they need key position defenders so one or more may end up back?

Power forwards are worth gold so whoever they trade out down the track will get them a top replacement. & they get to choose to keep their best forward combo.

the running mids again they may lose one of them so they have them ontap. the flankers types are easier to come buy.

nothing wrong with building an portfolio of investments who they can choose to trade later.

In a wealth of young mids, Tyson was tradable and they got pick 2 from us. Imagine what Patton or Cameron or Boyd or McCarthy will be worth as they come into bloom and are deemed excess? If GWS's development works (and that's not certain), any one of these guys could easily be worth at least a top 5 pick in 3 yrs time when they need draft re-energising. In theory, a very smart move.

My information is that one of the reasons why the AFL refused Melbourne's request for a priority pick was that it would have ruined GWS's recruiting plans.

Sounds feasible to me.

Yeah-nah.

Suns will be too strong during this period and will always over shadow the Giants.

Yes, Suns tend to shadow all things :)

Stephen Silvagni and whoever else they have are clueless

Cant wait to get some more of their kids in the coming years to add to Dom Tyson.

Whitfield and Shiel would be nice, thanks.

All club's would like to have three gun tall forwards - on paper we do as well if Clark and Dawes were ever fit and we have Hogan and Watts.

I suspect they know Scully's knees and poor disposal makes him a bust, so drafting a similar small running left-footer in Kelly makes sense.

The only mistake I would think was taking McCarthy, but maybe they see him as potentially a good tall defender - which they still lack.

You should be worried. With the AFL $s going to GWS & Suns we're almost destined to be long term cellar dwellers. To explain more would take me hours .

I've got better things to worry about puntkick and besides we r on the move my friend especially now with the new regime in place.

We won't be long term cellar dwellers any longer. Keep in mind it's been 7 yrs of cellar dwelling already.

Lol! We're calling GWS's recruiting team amateur hour hacks! Like we've been so good at selecting champions with our multitude of high draft picks over the last 10 yrs. Does the name Lucas Cook ring a bell? How about Cale Moreton? Jordan Gysberts? Could even include Bate, Maric, Blease, Tappy, Strauss, perhaps Trenners.

GWS have done well so far, with the ironic exception of one Tom Scully.

don't forget izzy

Maybe they took best available.

You're right DC, forgot him, but he was only ever going to be expensive visual merchandising paid for by Vlad.

Great logic by GWS, we have one reliable star goalkicker-let's make him a defender.

The saddest thing about GWS is not how favoured they are by the AFL or their non-existent fan support, it's how much talent they're getting that's basically going down the drain because they have no idea how to play as a team. The whole "club" makes me pretty sick

Give them a break - they're 2 years in. So GC with twice as attractive locale were able to attract Ablett. GWS has been up against it. Give it 5 years and judge their strategy.

It's a rubbish strategy. Not because they wont be good eventually but because they've had 2 complete disaster years and whilst they should improve this year they are still heading for no more than 5 wins. It's crap that the rest of the league let them get away with it. But then Melbourne have contributed to them with a mini draft pick and giving them pick 2.

Anyway McCarthy is a nice kick and has good athleticism. No reason he can't be a CHB and they got Lobb at their next pick.

They have a very well rounded mix of talent now.

Club drafts the best two key forwards, the best midfielder, or close to, and one of the best ruckmen and they are recruiting hacks. Silly stuff. If they keep their list together, they are in very good shape.

I don't think they've had any alternative. No one decent established has wanted to go there.

Not sure how hard they tried, it was a bit of a chicken and egg situation.

So, they're using low picks on kids in the hope of getting low picks in the future but what they really need now is more mature bodies.

Yeah, makes sense, in a round about [censored] reality kind of way.

Exactly, for example next year trade Patton for a first round pick and spread the ages of all their players.

Is this the same Cameron that dominated a forward line in a young side? Patton will be moved on.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
