I will NEVER Forget

It was my happiest day at the footy ever, in 45 years of following the mighty Dees.

I even made the front page of the Age in the crowd shot of the game.

Finals after years of misery.

Lets hope it happens again soon

There have been many, but these 3 are right up there.

1: Melb vs Coll 1964 2nd Semi Absolutely destroyed the pies, and therefore thought we were unbeatable for the flag. As a young kid at the time, I learned 2 things from this, never take everything for granted, and Grand Finals can be very different from all previous games. As it has turned out, I havent had to worry about being cocky when it comes to the Dees winning a flag since then.

2: The euphoria at the Western Oval (1987) that day was something that had to be witnessed to be believed.

3: The complete opposite was experienced only a few weeks later when we lost the '87 Prem final.

Last round in season '87'

Footscray Vs Melbourne

Footscray

10.8 (68)

Melbourne

12.11 (83)

Western Oval

31,249

29 August 1987

26 years ago almost to the day

Balmy Spring weather , near record crowd and I witnessed one of the greatest wins in the History of the MFC

Some recollections

Gary Lyon breaking leg early

Brett Lovett, playing a sensational game

Earl Spalding, marking everything that came his way at CHB

Graeme Yeats, controlling the wing

Danny Hughes, the Trojan up back

Brett Bailey, typical workmanlike performance

Jim Stynes , winning the ruck

Brian Wilson, one of the architects of this great win.

Ricky Jackson, Lively as always

Warren Dean. ah what could have been, a rare talent

Sean Wight, Brilliant game in defense!

David Williams "Has marked left wing , Right Wing and left Wing in a matter of minutes "Tim Lane"

Robert Flower, Held well early, then cutting lose and kicking three "Brilliant Goals" to win us the game! Including a freak mark in the last Q

The rooms afterwards were "Electric' and not to mention the after match which was sensational!

Just for melancholy I will put the second half replay CH2 Replay ( which I still have, on for Fathers' day and

Bask in the glory I still feel to this day to have been, a very proud Demon Supporter!

I won't ever forget!

yep was there that day , it was great , a huge roar went up at news of the other game , think it was geelong , hawks ?

Never has a truer word been spoken. Tony Charlton, Jack Dyer (capt blood & the major) Doug Heywood etc. Then it went downhill when Rex Hunt started to take comedy to another level, then BT took it to a even lower level. Since then the current morons just scream (Anthony Hudson) to the point of yelling, get sidetracked on talking dribble, and neglect whats happening in play. They wouldnt know how to CALL a game, they are exactly that, commentors, making comments.

Most of these current commentors could learn a lot about painting a picture of a game, from past commentors. Most of todays commentors is akin to listening to the boys at the pub trying to call a game.

remember Geoff Leek & Doug biggalow on the ABC. Bluey Adams and Jack Edwards on HSV....Superb callers of the game.

What makes me feel old is that I have it on Beta!

The younger posters will not understand what Beta is

The ABC will be phasing out digital Betacam machines over the next 12 months.

Betamax used the same system just ran at a slower speed.

Was actually far superior than VHS, but SONY didn't market it properly so that National Panasonic & (i think) Philips got the market share after designing VHS.

Sony then concentrated on TV Stations worldwide....

Sony did not want their technology to be associated with adult films whereas the more liberal Europeans at Phillips had no such hangups. Given it was that genre which was a major driver of the the home video marketthat almost alone explains why the better Beta technology lost out to VHS.

I was standing with a mate behinds the goals at the scoreboard end. When Lyon broke his leg it is fair to say the Bullies faithful were just not very nice about it. To wit my mate decided we'd be better of on the Doug Hawkin's wing.

I almost floated over the bridge to the station knowing that at the age of 18 I was finally going to see the Dees in the finals.

We had the Sony. Front, not a top loader. Was a great machine - just somewhat limited when it came to renting movies. Usually about four to choose from at the video library! Taped plenty of Demon victories on it!

Some of those SONY Frontloaders are still running!! Although Tape Stock is wearing thin!!

SONY did make a dam good VHS. My first HiFi Stereo was a SONY

An excellent Beast.

Interesting. Hadn't heard that before. If true those SONY execs were pretty stupid as the market was going to happen regardless.

Bit like Decca Records passing up The Beatles...So very quickly signed The Stones!!

It still runs! Although some day it will pack it in, making hours upon hours of taped matches completely useless. Have converted many of those oldies to DVD.

Neither will I, I was 1 years old.

I pooped my pants twice that day and vomited on Mun's rug. Great day, will never forget.

So apart from your age Song, has anything else changed while watching the Dees play?

Geoff Leek & Doug Biggalow, were up there with the best of them. Bluey Adams has slipped my memory jack Edwards, I didnt rate as highly as the others.

Gee werent we spoiled back in those days, get home from the footy (after a mad dash home) then watch the replays on Ch 7, Ch9 or Ch2. (7 & 9 would replay different games) Throw in WOS on Sunday, with a roast lunch, Then off kicking the footy later in the day. The Sporting Globe would have a full rundown of all the games, qtr x qtr. kick x kick.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
