Nick Duigan and Jeremy Laidler

Not sure if a thread has been started on these two players, but they look to be out of favour at Carlton.

Duigan would be a handy 3rd/4th tall/running defender for us. Big strong body, craves the competitive stuff and normally uses the footy well.

Laidler had a breakout year, plays a similar role to Garland, however would be a handy player. Also ultra competitive.

Backline could shape up like...

FB: Garland - McDonald - Dunn/Clisby

HB: Duigan - Frawley - Terlich

Thoughts?

I think we only need more defenders if we continue to neglect the midfield. Wouldn't think either player would improve our best 22.

No room for grimes ?

Reckon we really need a tough fast back pocket to mind the goal sneaks. A bartram with kicking skills.

I'd be playing Grimes through the midfield.

Don't think we need anymore B Grade talls, so not interested in Duigan, however, Laidler may be worth a look. He is of AFL quality, but just up against a fleet of small running players at Carlton.

We need Roos or Williams to have any hope landing decent players. Who is gods name would want to come to the MFC? We are a basket case and career destroyer. Come on Roos, save us from ourselves and sign.

They don't offer any more than Grimes, Garland, Clisby, Terlich, Sellar, Strauss and Pedersen offer now.

I want to improve our midfield. We won't do that with D-Grade defenders.

Wasn't Laidler average and struggling to get a game at Geelong, then average and struggling to get a game at Carlton?

At least Gillies might find an old mate to play with at Casey.

at the start of the year Duigan was talked about as a possible captain at the blues! how things can change. He was a reasonably good defender for the Blues but he had some of the worst kicks i have seen, and we have a better back 6 then Carlton too so even if we did get him he'd struggle to get a game for us. And anyway, its mids we desperately need.

No more other club vfl players, especially carlton.

All we need is a couple of very good midfielders, and a crumbing forward or 2.

We are absolutely loaded with KPP's at both ends of the ground, and bloody good ones at that.

No, Duigan good VFL player average disposal, Laidler a bit slow...we are well covered for backs.

I'm pretty happy with our defence going forward. A 22 year old Matty Whelan wouldn't go astray though. Mids mids mids and a quality small forward. Too much to ask?

I miss Matty Whelan! GUN! The HIRDINATOR!!!

MIDFIELDERS, MIDFIELDERS, MIDFIELDERS!!!!

Yes, we need good midfielders. But that doesn't mean we can't walk and chew gum at the same time - we can look at the defence too.

As for these two players - lol.

The OP doesn't even include them both in his revamped best 6.

Wasn't affraid to put his body on the line. Selfless and determined.

Fringe players who can't get a game at a mid-table club. No thanks. We should set our goals higher than that.

What do you think Terlich does?

No,we do not need defenders, hopefully there is a quality experienced midfielder that we can prise away from another Club, and one that is getting regular games now

Why would we be recruiting players who struggle to get a game in a very average Carlton side.

We recruited players like that last summer.

Where are they?

Casey.

Early days yet, but Dean Terlich has a chance of being that player.

i wouldbt be upset with getting Duigan.

but i would be Laidler

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
