Greenwood is tough and a decent player. He also needs an opportunity. I wouldn't mind him as a midfield addition.

IMO players like Greenwood, though not necessarily him are part of the way for us to go. We need to identify some hungy, experienced, tough, skillful, committed players, who are not getting a run at their clubs, or who are not yet in the AFL system.

A few of those players will add immediate improvement to the team, so that we can then be competitive and give the new and younger players a solid environment to develop in.

These players may only be 2-3 year players for us, but they are vital to our immediate development as a strong team.

I think given how bad our midfield is we should look at putting one of Clark, Dawes or Watts up for trade in hope of getting a decent midfielder to the club.

That's the way, lets get rid of a 200 and something athletic forward who is coming along nicely, for an outside midget. Took us an eternity to get anyone over 180 on the list and now we want get rid of them? The midfield is poor we all know that, but lets remain a little sensible how we go about repairing it. Strange as it may seem IMO I don't think we need that much. Viney and Jones are good so we need a true A grader ( or a future A grader) and a couple of others. GWS may be a good starting point and we owe them

I like the post about picking up someone like Greenwood. I've watched him play and though he has limitations he is tough and can find the footy. Would add immediate relief to guys like Jones and Viney and wouldn't cost us much, maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder if he says he wants to go.

Sounds a likely type, but at this stage we need to recruit players who are sound and can get on the park every week.

We should take a leaf out of Richmond's book - they've done really well with Grigg and Houli so far.

I started a thread here about how we should be following richmonds set up in going for players that are borderline in opposition teams but would be handy inclusions to our side.

I got absolutely howled down and people still think that guys like Ivan maric, houli, grigg etc are all duds and that Melbourne werent far behind Richmond in terms of develoment.

Some posters here need a good reality check..

Our targets should be...

• A grade mids
• Mids on the fringe at stronger clubs
• interstate mids who might want to come home

and maybe 1 or 2 older mids for experience

the top 3 we would have to trade for so not sure on our chances there, sewell and Dal Santo should absolutely be on the radar

unfortunately David Swallow is from WA so the go home factor won't help us there, and we're pushing a ton of bricks up hill with Adams, i feel he is going to basically get to pick his preference unless we offer way overs.

Whilst on Michie, poor bloke’s just done his knee in the WAFL. Out for season, had already missed better part of two years with stress fractures in his foot. Out of contract this season, tough caper for a young player.

And also say things like we should offer Fyfe a big contract. Do people really think these types of players will come to us. The only way out of this mess is clever recruiting. That means taking guys like Greenwood, Miles, Sewell, Cross who are out of favour or fringe at other clubs but would walk into our midfield. The chances of us getting an A grade mid is very slim at the moment.

And maybe Dusty Martin, as he is yet to re-sign.

I reckon we'd be in with a decent shot if Choco comes across as coach, which is looking more likely IMO.

No offence, dd36 but you lost people with the title ("Melbourne should take a leaf out of Richmonds book") and then your OP finished on a tangent that many couldn't get past - the idea that we could have got something decent for the chaff we have recruited and discarded.

I really think if you had a more precise title and stuck to your point - it would be well appreciated.

The 'out of favour' types are out of favour because they're not quite cutting it for their respective teams.

Taking fringe players can work out with the right planning, especially for certain positions. It's a ridiculous idea to suggest that we snap up any out of favour mid and gift them games in our midfield. That's not the way to go about it at all.

If Sewell was at our club, he would hardly set the world on fire. He is made to look a lot better than he is because he plays in a fantastic midfield.

We need to continue to develop Grimes, Jones, Trengove, Viney, Toumpas and Sylvia and try and get a really good free agent or two by the end of the year who can really influence and inspire that core midfield group of players. Someone like Mundy or Cooney.

Nurture and develop our talent and bring in some leadership and really hard working free agent mids.

I don't agree with the Greenwood suggestions. It would just be injecting our club with more average mids. There's a [censored] reason he's not getting a game. Do people think about that?
