And why bother giving him Bryan Kenneally's old number if you're going to apply exclusive and particular selection criteria to picking him for AFL games.

Maybe the number change was under Cam Schwab's direction (Kenneally had a very similar build, played 'Ruck Rover', wing and half-forward, was hard at it but probably didn't have the natural ability of many others in the sides he played in (1959-1969)). OK, Bryan played for Victoria in 1967 but he'd have been picked on application rather than talent.

I'm stumped, I rate Magner and would not be surprised if he left at the end of the season.

The FD want to focus on tackling and contested possessions, so they leave out one of our toughest and hard at it players....there off there heads I swear!

If we lose Magner because of erratic selection behaviour, it wouldn't surprise me. None of the ineptness surprises me anymore

Another knee-jerk anti-Neeld post. Anything that seems wrong, it's his fault. Maybe it is. But as a number of subsequent posters have posted, there may be many sensible reasons as to why Magner was omitted. And add to that there may be things that we don't know - not that that would stop some people rushing to judgement.

Continually amazed by the depth of anti-Neeld sentiment. You'd think he took over the Hawks and suddenly they became a crap team, rather than he took over a crap team, cleaned it out and started again.

this is coming from someone who backed Schwab to you where blue in the face , give it a rest, Neelds record speaks for itself, as for Magner surely he's better than spuds like Bail and Nicholson. Edited by mjt

Magner won't leave. He isn't a free or restricted agent so we would have to trade him and to be honest no one will want him - there is a reason he was in the draft 7 times (if memory serves me correctly) until we picked him up.

To all the people saying he has been mistreated because:

1) We kept him on the rookie list - Evans and Nicholson were at the end of their 2 year max stay on the rookie list and either had to be promoted or dropped and Magner could stay on the rooki list for an extra year

2) We drop him - he is a great VFL player but limited AFL player.

At the end of the day I'd have Magner in than Bail. Maybe the team selectors think that Magner has reached his glass ceiling and Bail/anyone else they have selected over him has a higher one and needs game experience.

I dunno... but how the hell Rohan Bail still get games amazes me.

Clearly he must be one of our most-elite trainers.

What are his opponent doing though?

He may be getting 20 touches (probably 10 of them are turnovers) but how many touches are his opponents getting?

We all know Blease has more talent than most of our current mids, but Neeld won't play him until he has worked on his defensive game.

Any chance that could be the problem?

So it's Neelds fault for Magner not getting a regular game in our top regular 22, despite only being promoted to the senior list as an injury replacement 4 weeks ago, does Neeld get any credit for actually getting us to recruit him for the rookie list???

I thought it had already been said before that Magner is effectively a back up for the Jones or McKenzie roles and he's not as good as jones and not as good of a tagger as McKenzie. I do think he deserves more games, but Bail and Nicholson play different positions than Magner, so the question becomes, who's role does he take if he comes in, and could he perform it to the required standard?

He takes the role of second best midfielder

Just won 2 movie tickets on SEN 'deadset' by saying that Deadset Neeld is off his head by not picking Magner when he's one of our toughest players and his been tearing it up in VFL.

I heard Finey say last night that Neeld at least owed Melbourne Supporters some sort of explanation as to why Magner was dropped and cannot get back into the AFL side despite further excelling at VFL level. He pointed to Evans who has had 3 quiet ones and M.Jones who was subbed-off last week after gleaning 7 possessions.

Hopefully someone shall ask the question and we'll get a reasoned response rather than some avoidant gibberish/ gobbledygook.

Yeah Neeld isn't part of the problem as we are KILLING it on the field. Don't see how the coach could possibly be part of the problem.

Bloody hell it's as clear as day he is PART of the problem.

Goat photos I suspect. I also suspect Magner was holding the goat

But if Jimmy was restraining the beast wouldn't his testimony also carry some weight from a selection point of view.

I'm assuming Neeld fits in here somewhere.

The thought has crossed my mind.

If they change the rules so you get 6 points for kicking out of bounds he could be an asset.

He would still struggle to make it into the 22....

Neeld is always talking about experience and getting games into our young players - maybe it has something to do with that (Magner has already peaked - not part of our future). Never the less we should still be fielding the best possible team and developing our yougth in the best possible team/culture.

Maybe Magner had a little niggle a couple weeks ago?

It is an odd one - maybe Magner is [censored] off with Neeld for not making him captain (probably be picked up by Brissy next year)

I disagree that the supporters have a right to a justification to every selection decision that happens. What if, hypothetically, the reason was "he's got ability, but just doesn't listen to a word his coaches or teammates say"? It would be unfair on the player for this to enter the public domain.

So in answer to the title of this topic, yes, there's a pretty good chance the coach knows something about Magner that we don't know. The reason may not be apparent to us, but that doesn't mean that there isn't one, or that it isn't a compelling one. I know that most people have zero trust or Neeld, but that doesn't mean that every decision he makes is poor or irrational.

I agree. The instance of which we speak however does beg a level of clarification because it, at least outwardly, appears to be quite aberrant and without logic.

It should not be the lot of the humble supporter to be happy with bemusement.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
