Maybe a stint in the VFL would do him some good, get him dominating games

We don't have the players in reserve to drop him. Get Byrnes, Sylvia and Viney back maybe. But he's running and he's trying. He's a bit meh as far as I see at the moment. Just let him be and focus on the rest I think

He was semi ok today....but still a cameo player and not a real captain.

Maybe he's just not as good as we hoped he would be?

He was everything we were hoping in his first 2 years, the last year and 8 rounds have not been the same player, maybe that's the injuries and confidence, maybe that's Neeld, but i certainly wouldn't have said he doesn't have the ability

Thought his second half was ok today. He was quiet in the first half. Cameron Ling watched him on the coverage today closely at one point and said that it looked like his role today was to draw his player away from the other forwards, and that he was doing a huge amount of running, and that it was a selfless role he was playing.. but he also commented as to whether that is the best role for Trengove, as the captain of your club to play..

Don't think he was our worst by any stretch, but it's not the role that a lot of supporters want to see from their captain I guess.

I dont think he should have played today, was not fit enough to be competitive all day. did try but but body and skills are just not up to it yet. needs time in with Casey to try to get himself right.

Yes he was good, but I still don't think he set the world on fire by any means (as a first and second year player).

I liked his second half, hopefully he will get confidence out of that.

What I like about Trengove is his defensive efforts and team support to keep our structures working. I dont see this as the captiancy weighing him down but rather him doing his utmost to get the most out of the 17 team mates. I think his offensive game will come back as our team improves and he can direct more of his focus to attacking play.

Jacky boy should be allowed to play his natural game. Neeld won't let him do that.

He has real class, and i'd say is our best defensive mid by a mile, funny considering we play Mckenzie as a tagger...;

but Trengove needs to get his confidence and conditioning up, and turn 20 touches and 8 tackle games into 30 touches 8 tackles and a goal or two,

I always leave a game feeling he has been abit quiet, and then realise all of the off the ball work and 1%'s he has done later when watching a replay

Why are we playing him up forward? If he is unfit he shouldn't be playing - full stop! If it is a matter of form/confidence he should be playing at Casey - full stop!

The kid needs to be at Casey - I couldn't care less if he is a captain!

Seriously what's going to happen if they put him in Casey for a couple weeks, is our team going to fall apart (oh wait) or is the media going turn their spolight on us (oh wait)

I think we saw last week what happens to our team without bpokes like JT out there. His team eforts and 1%ers are critical at this stage of our teams development.

I thought he started to look much better in the second half and he does do a lot of work off the ball.

My guess is that it is a confidence thing.

I wouldn't my mind betting the focus on increased bike training since Neeld (and note Craig) joined the club, has reduced some of Trengove's explosiveness or at least aerobic power. As soon as Sanderson walked into Adelaide, he threw out the bikes and all of a sudden, players who had lost a few hards and seemed hampered (blokes like Dangerfield) regained their explosiveness. Of course, some of that could be down to a new coach, just as Trengove's issues may simply lie in a string of injuries, which curtailed his pre season. I'm beginning to think though that it's the bikes.

Interesting thought on the bikes...it's got to be something, maybe it is the bikes.

Maybe the FD should be told to get on their bikes!

Seriously….your clutching at straws.

He is slow, always has been and when you couple that with a poor preseason he becomes ridiculously slow and unable to influence the contest.

Everyone keeps referring back to his first few years as if he was a champion, as Bizkit pointed out, he by no means set the world on fire and I actually thought he was quite underwhelming.

You're probably right about clutching at straws but he hasn't alway been as slow as the last 2 seasons.

I don't agree with your assessment of his first few seasons, he was a definite plus for me and played some good footy but has seriously stalled now.

Maybe he was suffering from a foot injury that slowed him down? I know personally how hard these are to get over. Maybe his last 6 quarters have been very good and he is building a bit of steam. Maybe he is trying to lead a football club out of the wilderness. Maybe drafting him was and is still a great move, the way he leads the players and speaks through turmoil I admire. Just maybe..........

He was much better and effective on the weekend. It appears that Neeld has been focusing purely on the defensive part of his game, I can only assume to make him a more complete player. But I want him attacking, I want him to be the one causing headaches for other teams not trying to nullify opposition players.

I also think, when it comes to his speed, it's fair to assume no matter what the club says about him he has lost some conditioning over pre-season due to his stress fracture. Hopefully a full pre-season next year will help him regain some pace. He was never a speedster, but I remember that Richmond game in 2011 where he was able to chase down two people consecutively and tackle them effectively.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
