Why is James Magner on the rookie list?

How about this for a scenario:

If Magner was on the list this year, Dean Terlich would not be.

He was the last live pick at the draft for us, and if one of you says "we may have got him in the Rookie Draft!" then you are an idiot because it would mean he wasn't on the list and in the same place as Magner.

How aout this for a scenario; we don't draft Gillies, Rodan and Pederson and we'd have both on the list.

and a pre-season pick for Hannath.

Can you name any of the Melbourne Players that arent slow and don't butcher the pill?

Spread; the players don't even know what that looks like.

That's true, but Evans and nicho are two of them who are quick, and Evans has been using the footy alright though.

We spread, just way too early and don't run back!

Here's hoping that Barry adds some much needed pace to the midfield, eventually.

Round 5 VFL player report via MFC

James Magner: Jimmy had 32 disposals, seven hard ball gets and six tackles. He again led the team around the stoppages and continually worked the ball out of congestion. His form has been very good.

Tom Couch: Tom played a negating role on one of Williamstown's prime midfielders and was still able to win 28 disposals. He also led the side in contested possessions and tackles.

The above is stock standard for both players @ VFL, No doubt both players will be elevated this year. I could not see Stark or Clisby being elevated over these two... Unless of course these two average 40 hard ball gets, average 20 clearances per game and kick 6 goals a game!

We've had plenty of top notch VFL players who haven't made it at the senior level - such as Paul Johnson. Which means we shouldn't assume Magner and Couch would necessarily make it at the top level. However, I thought we saw enough in Magner last year to give him a go and I'm sure his time will come. Couch I'm less sure about. As frustrating as it might be for Magner and us, I see no problem with him getting fitter, better skilled and hungrier in the twos. It's not like he's going to be the difference between us winning the Premiership or coming second this year.

Last year Magner was the club's equal 4th Vote-Getter in the Brownlow, just sayin'.

If he doesn't get elevated, given the opportunity is there, then I am seriously losing faith in Neeld.

We're playing the Suns this week, we need to win this one.

Magner's inclusion would take a lot of pressure off Jones and Viney.

We need to win more than just this one Hatchman.

Mags selection certainly wouldnt hurt our chances.

Again.

And who else did very well on the weekend: David Rodan. Valenti has been getting high stats in the VFL for years, but was found out at AFL level. Cam Pedersen has also consistently performed at a "class above" level in the VFL.

High possession count in the VFL is no guarantee at all that a player will do the same or similar at AFL level.

In any case, Magner will get his chance, but I for one have difficulty seeing that it will make all that much difference.

Give him a damn game!

By golly he deserves it more than anyone.

Has worked harder than anyone to get even a look in at AFL level., and regularly dominates the VFL.

If I remember rightly Magner was our best player in the first three games last year and was playing well until he was moved from the middle and then rested.

Magner must come in for Grimes , and Couch as a tagger at the expense of Mckenzie. (replaces Clark, to get off rookie list.)

This will free up Jones and Sylvia as well.

We have to try things like this because nothing else is working, and Mckenzie , as likeable a lad he is, aint no AFL player.

Exactly right. Let him play his natural ball winning, in and under game and he'll be good for us this season.

Spot on!

He was used played as a defensive forward, off half back and as a tagger.

Maybe to teach him the defensive skillset? All I know is that he is a great extractor of the footy and as others are saying, it will ease the pressure on Jonesy, Viney etc.

just let the pitbull out of the cage!

Latest Craig Report suggests that this will happen!

Watch it and you'll see, Magner will start this week.

For long term injury AFL rules state 8 weeks, so with Grimes being 6-8 weeks it will happen.
Ok but how about one outside the square ?

We know Magner is going well and his form may get him on the list next year. So putting him up will give us a boost but will we learn anything.

What about they put in Clisby instead and play him at Half back ?

Then he is competing with Stauss and Nicholson.

maybe we would learn more for next year.

After all its all about development.

Magner is 25, plenty of development and years to come from him in the guts whilst others learn.

Give him a go i say.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
