Mods, please remove this Barn Dee guy. He is highly offensive, uneducated, ignorant and lacking any understanding of what it is like to be an ethnic minority who have been marginalized as a result of their land be taken over by us whites. As you can see I don't contribute much to this forum but I am one of the silent readers. As much as I enjoy reading spirited debates and tolerate the personal attacks some posters have with each other, I find that this guy's comments cross the line of what is acceptable to read in a forum like this.

My sons are doing the same as your daughter. I have worked my arse off to get where I am (such as it is). That's not the bloody point.

Its not a sob story, its about judging each case on its merits. Liam comes from a tribal society in the outback. You ever been there?

FFS I said nobody other than idiots or zealots claim to have the answer. You have just proven me correct you stupid ignoramous.

so im a stupid ignoramous , thats fair i am a MFC person thru and thru , cheer up sad sack , stupid ? mmmmm i dont think so , oh i lied to a stranger , silly me !

I quite often use lateral thinking to shift from my typically conservative beliefs. The triviality of Howe's behaviour at the cricket being a case in point. Or the ridiculous over-reaction to the two young radio hosts whose joke went wrong. I like to look at every situation on their merits, John. I'll naturally LEAN a certain way, but it won't stifle my want to sweep the pathways of my mind in order to get to the crux of an issue, while others simply trod a well worn blinkered path.

Thanks for your interest.

I wasn't referring to your (elsewhere stated) political views, BH, just the observation in your post that you're 'usually the first to state that every man is the architect of his own destiny'. Since that was an obvious acknowledgment of a shift in your own position, your one-liner came across as a bit supercilious as well as self-contradictory. But I was only addressing the one liner to Sue, not questioning your flexibility in thinking, which I'd prefer to hope we're all capable of, even if we don't always agree on what to be flexible about.

OK, we'll disagree then. Apologies for the name calling - let's move on.

As left field said earlier, you should take each case on it's merits (many indigenous Australians don't like being individually marked as a victim and nor should they) but your comments about indigenous Australians are cookie cutter and simplistic. Look at the statistics in regards at just life expectancy (16 years less for indigenous Australians vs. non indigenous), child abuse (six times more likely to occur in indigenous homes vs. non indigenous homes) and imprisonment (28 times more likely to occur to happen to indigenous minors). This doesn't mean all indigenous people end up that way but to deny that there are problems there is to ignore an elephant in the room.

Let's now look at Australian history in regards to indigenous Australia. Until 1967, they weren't included in the census. They only got the right to vote in 1962. They weren't allowed to travel overseas and had their families split up. They weren't allowed to enter certain places as highlighted by Charlie Perkins on the Freedom Rides of the '60's. That is just a sampler of what was wrong.

Now, if your culture had been broken up, excluded from civil society for as long as that and had been kept at the bottom of the pile so long, do you think you would be able to rise to the top of your field overnight? Who knows? You may be able to and others have overcome it but they are the exceptions, they aren't the rule. More power to them but in reality, starting at that point and becoming the Western ideal of 'affluent' (and who says we all want to become that) would be pretty tough.

Looking at Liam's situation, a lot of what I said may not apply. However, do not cast yourself as some kind of victim to indigenous Australia as quite frankly, that is p*** weak and you look like a muppet doing so. One thing that has annoyed me since I have gotten back to Australia is the attitude of some who think that they have it so hard by living in the one of the most prosperous Western countries in the world but the real villains are the ones who have the least (and I am not just talking about the indigenous population). Giving them some money might force me to spend less on my McMansion with 5 plasma screen TVs that I need. Before you cast aspersions on those who have the least, experience their lives or shut up.

By the way, did your daughter pay her University fees up front? Or did she use HELP/HECS?

No it's his opinion, I don't agree with it but it's better to hear what people have to say rather than be somewhat surprised down the track that many people have these opinions. This is where political correctness goes wrong, you are better off knowing what you are up against.

I wasn't even talking about you specifically about the McMansions.

As for your daughter, I dip my hat. It's great to see when someone can achieve their dreams. However, even though that may be the case, it doesn't give you the right to spout such ill informed, racist crap (and yes, it was racist by definition in that you applied a huge negative generalization to a large swathe of the population based on race. It is no matter how much you deny it) and not get called out on it. And you aren't the one suffering the most due to indigenous disadvantage.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
