Good work Karmichael. I know this is Demitrou's wet dream come true.

Cop that Richmond.

still rather see a Tassie or NT AFL team some day, but I guess we have to go along with the circus that is our 'National Game'

Their win makes me think....OH [censored]! And the reason being is that I have a bad feeling about this game now. But good on Karmichael. Worth every cent?

I doubt it. Lets not get carried away over one kick. He had 13 possessions for the day. I'd say he is a long way off earning "every cent"

Don't know if it's been mentioned before now, but that after the siren goal and ensuing celebration by K HUNT (sorry, I had to do that), has probably had more of an impact on the AFL's press into NRL territory than all of Vlad and Co's efforts thus far.

I don't think so, there are probably 3 or so players in the competition that deserve $1m per year I'd have Hunt in the $150k to $200k category. He's a battler at best.

Port really and GWS and GC

I think the Dogs have an interesting finish to the season, they could easily not win another game for the season, no easy games ie Port GWS or GC for them. They are 3 wins ahead of us at present though

I think we'll struggle to beat Port and the Gold Coast, they're both capable of playing better football than us at the moment and our injury list is a worry. Plus we play Port in Darwin which will be a draining match, and Gold Coast the week after, we always seem to suffer after our Darwin game.

We play North the week after Darwin - a certain loss.

I think I heard somewhere that the press, media buildup, sponsorship awareness etc. raised by the signing of Karmichael had already covered the cost of his contract before he'd even debuted. In terms of AFL exposure in the Rugby regions which, let's be honest, is the only reason he's paid that much - I'd say he's proven worth it for the AFL definitely. Certainly not worth that money on playing ability, but that's really beside the point.

That's a very very subjective statement to make (by whoever)

An easy statement to make because you can't really disprove or prove it

Yes you could spend that same sort of money on an advertising campaign

But in this case its not really what alternatives might cost but whether it is (measureably) effective and so far I've seen no evidence

Anyway, agree KH is not being paid that coin just to be a player

Correct, it could also be argued that he would be despised by the Rugby followers up there for being a turncoat. Would it attract more players to rugby down here if an established AFL player joined the Storm?

Ok...

This was from the Head of the AFL during the pre-season, this before Hunt has put in a decent season before his winning goal.

LOL

Surely you didn't expect Dimwit to say it was a waste of (his) money or any thing negative

I'm sure Julia thinks she is doing a good job too

You sound like Mel Gibson in that movie...

I offer my opinion - you say that it is a very subjective thing to say and that you've seen no evidence. I reply with a quote from the man who (whilst highly despisable) would know a great deal more than you. Apparently, that's not enough. So I'll continue.

Hunt's signing on this season with Gold Coast was seen as valuable as "Hunt has earned the AFL millions of dollars worth of valuable publicity in the northern battleground states."

He signed a big money contract, thanks almost entirely to the AFL's decision to contribute to his payment under a "promotional marketing and advertising role." He'll earn over $1m this season with "the AFL again topping up his deal, recontracting him as an ambassador to promote the game." Surely you don't believe that the AFL would spend $800,000 on marketing that they do not believe is having an effect. Indeed, Demetriou was quoted as saying Hunt had repaid the investment "in spades...in fact, [he's] in credit."

The AFL has paid him an inordinate amount of money to promote the game in the area. Various sources have stated that this has been beneficial to the AFL, possibly more beneficial than they had anticipated. This is supported by his re-signing, a sign that he is bringing in a hell of a lot of publicity. Now, I'm not so sure if he'd paid his contract before debut (that may've been dodgy memory) but I think it's clear that he has fulfilled his role - and the AFL believe he will continue to do so.

The events of last night will only further underline his importance to the growth of the new team.

The head of the AFL has even said that whilst it's a significant, they've been every cent they've spent is "worth it."

If you still choose to believe it's not, that's entirely up to you.

Meatloaf, Dimwidth said he was going to be good for the GF didn't he? Still thought he was even though it was recognised as a dismal failure.

They will have the PR people pumping him for all it's worth, but that's just my take on it anyway.

Well really, HG, the best you can offer is to quote the very person responsible for the "promotion"

It insults my intelligence

BTW I'm not totally against the concept nor do I think that one or both of KH or IF won't become reasonable player's in time

I'm just against nebullus, mythologic, prove-nothing statements especially from self-interested, image-obsessed commentators like Dimwit

Can you offer a claim, based in some element of fact, to discredit what I've said then - other than to sprout your obvious dislike of the CEO?

You are welcome to hold the view that it is money well spent

Personally I am not swayed by your evidence

I don't feel it is my place to provide evidence as I am not the one making the claim

Re GWS

I think GWS is in a very difficult position and I question if this is the best way to spend money at this time to make GWS successful

Success for AFL in Western Sydney will equate to on-field success more so than in Vic

GWS has already shifted from Blacktown due to lack of council support

Breakfast Point will close at the end of this season as it is too expensive

GWS are still looking for a (more) permanent home

Their training facilities are the worst in the league operating out of prefab sheds with inadequate equipment

I think they have higher priorities than blowing $6M on IF

Just saying...........

Had a read of punt road end as suggested in a previous post. Read the "What following the Tigers is mentally doing to you" thread in Dyer tribe, what a laugh, some classic posts.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
