Channel 7's Dennis Cometti believes Scott Thompson may be a chance for this years Brownlow. A fair call given he IS a premier midfielder. It is a shame we could not hold him (I understand it was a fir dinkum family tie that took him back to Adelaide).

Scott Thompson is one of my all time fav players full stop. I loved him at the dees and it was a massive loss when he lost him. I'm really pleased for his success at the crows and wish him more success.

But this thread topic was about his chance of winning the brownlow (which i actually think is a great bet and i'll be getting on) not a moan about us losing him (even though jurrachane noted it was a bummer we lost him - which it was!)

Scott Thompson probably doesn't get the kudo's he deserves. Of course it'd be nice to see him still in a dees jumper, but there isn't many other non-melbourne players I'd be happier to see win a brownlow.

Before we write off a few of our recent recuits, it should be remembered that Thompson had quite a slow start to his career. His frist 3 years at Melbourne were pretty unremarkable - it wasn't until 2004 that he really began to impose himself on the game.

For the record, I remember telling a friend back in 2004 that Thompson would win a brownlow one day. He dismissed him as a "fringe player".

At this stage I'd say Watson, Kennedy and Selwood would be the top 3.

yes Scott Thompson was unlucky with injury at Demonland BUT showed glimpses especially in this 2003 year. One that got away.

He is a good bloke, i heard the Ox interview him earlier in the year.

But he left us...and we have sadly missed him ever since...so i get sh!tty everytime he is on my telly.

Him leaving really cut me up, I could see he was going to be a very quality player in that final year with us. He had a very injury prone time at Melbourne and was finally starting to show something in his last year, what really added insult though was his manager saying that he'd given us 5 years of good service. Bulls--- he was injured for most of it, we spent time and money on his rehab and development only for Adelaide to reap the reward. And what did we get for him? Pick 14 if i'm not mistaken.

I could cop him leaving but we got seriously shafted with that trade. (Thanks to jurracane for opening up this wound!)

you can tell there was no game at the weekend, noboby to bash from the MFC, let's lament about something that happened a few years ago, that's going forward isn't it.....I am with JM and Diesel......who cares if he may win the Brownlow....move on nothing to see here...

Thompson did his foot in round 13, 2004 against Essendon and never played for the Dees again.

After winning that game Melbourne was second on the ladder with 10 wins out of 13 matches.

From the remaining 9 matches we won only 4, beating St Kilda who finished 3rd and the Bulldogs, Tigers and Hawks who finished 14th, 15th, 16th.

Pissweak Port, who had then never beaten Melbourne in Melbourne, won the flag that year, beating the Lions who were butchered by injury in the GF.

2004 was definitely the year that got away.

Had we held on to Thompson, who was precisely what we needed, an inside ball winner, (and also Farmer, who should never have gone back to WA) we were definitely a chance to pinch a flag in 2004 or 2005 and maybe even 2006.

Yes quite true however in non-diplomatic usage, referring to someone as persona non grata is to say that he or she is ostracized. Such a person is for all intents and purposes culturally banished, so as to be figuratively nonexistent. Not speaking about someone would be consistent with being non existent and a person being ostracized .

As it turns out a straight swap for Beamer wasn't a bad result in the long term. Unfortunately as TT points out Thompson was about ready to flourish right as the team entered a possible premiership window 04-06 so his departure was a bit of a disaster.

Moloney has proven a reasonable swap albeit never quite reaching the same heights as Thompson.

What is impossible to determine however is would Thompson have become the player he has had he remained at Melbourne or would his development have been stifled as it appears some others have?
