If it was a players choice where to be drafted we would be up poo creek without a paddle because as sad as it is to say what reason do we give young to players to come to our club, especially if they had other offers from continually successful Clubs?

without a draft, we would have to spend up big from the go, & get it absolutely right.

A large risk, but maybe the shot this club needs.

I would prefer a ranking system of the salary caps as per ladder positions.

Premier Team plays 100% top $...Bottom team pays about 85-90% of the salary Cap

Put some incentive into climbing the ladder...not to plummet into the welfare trough.

The draft was set up to try t o make the competition a level playing field, without it [censored] teams wouldnt have access to high draft picks. the fact that we screw most of ours up is another story.

If we abolished the draft we would have no currency to trade with and we are such an unattractive prospect we would surely fold in time. we would become even worse

Whoever invented the capital letter would be right royally [censored] off to see you abusing it like that. No respect!

If we kept a salary-cap which was strictly regulated and could be sure there'd be no Judd-style deals, and if we could guarantee every player would be more interested in earning money than winning a Premiership, then abolishing the Draft would work. But players can (and do) get payed off-book by wealthy clubs, and many people would simply just go running in search of a Premiership, leaving the poorly-performed clubs high and dry. In short, we'd probably be screwed.

Because getting payed off-book is morally wrong. It's like saying "Why have money if people can (and do) steal what they want." Not everyone gets payed off-book, so the current system is (mostly) effective. If there were no draft, then there would be no real club loyalty, and those clubs which could (or were willing) to rort the system would win every premiership, fostering a climate of success that would draw in every other success-driven (as opposed to money-driven) player.

Wouldn't clubs be forced just to treat their employees like they are treated in the real world? Why would there be no "club loyalty"?

More so that the AFL as a strong competition that people would want to support cannot work without a salary cap, as only 4-6 clubs could truly compete.

Players choosing to play AFL as a profession do so knowing they have a restricted earning capacity. if they are good enough a club will pay them millions, nobody is currently that good though.

I've never suggested to abolish the draft but I do think it needs some more fine tuning. Abolishment of the open pp selection is fantastic. But I do think the new FA laws will help and I'm sure the AFL will further tweak them over coming years.
