Why did we do that? We basically just told everyone who finishes below us that we are obliged to pick him, so you guys might as well force us to use our first pick, as you will be guaranteed it wont backfire on you.

Is there a loophole in this agreement? Does the agreement state that we have to pick him up in the 2012 draft? As daft as that sounds..

because he doesn't have to be a f/s if he doesn't want to and others were interested (e.g. crows)

by contracting him we can manage his development prior to draft time

because in the clubs judgement he would go top 5 anyway

Posted

you are forgetting we signed a 5 year agreement with him a year and a half ago

is that binding? if it is then thats bull$h@t coz other teams will know we are forced to take him and would definetly force us to use our first rounder on him.

if its not then we could trump them by taking a lauchie whitfield

Only if the teams under us believe Viney is worth their first pick. If they don't, and therefore don't make a bid, we could get Whitfield and Viney.

Perhaps we should have a word in young Jack's ear, somehow force GWS to take him with their number 1 pick, we pick up Whitfield or whoever is the 2nd best in the draft (assuming we finish 3rd last!), then in 2 years we will get Viney back. In that time, Jack complains about a suspect knee injury, and manages to play a handful of games. How's that grab ya Sheedy?!

At least we wouldnt have to offer his dad a job in recruiting..

Unless we do a deal.

Oooooh... I like this.

Very much up Gubby Allen's alley.

But it is still dependent on us finishing with only GWS below us.

Assuming we finish 3rd last(highly probable) either GWS or GC are the only clubs that could force us to use pick 3 or 4(compo pick).

We will then get Viney with our mid-round pick or second round pick around 13 or 21. Great scenario, the kid has talent!!

Why wouldnt they force us to use pick 3? they kow we are as close to obligated as you can be.....

never give your opposition a favour.....

Also if it isnt our first non compo pick it is our second round pick

We will be forced to use our first pick, and that's fine. The kid is a gun.

The team that's likely to get the absolute bargain is Essendon - Joe Daniher would be the meat in the Whitfield and Viney sandwich at picks 1, 2 and 3. He's going to be a great player.

If we use pick x on JV we still have pick x+1 and pick 12 ish. So we can mop any sliders and still get viney (cause we have two picks in a row).

I'm happy with a JV and a top 10 pick and pick 12 (or whatever our mid round compo pick is) in exchange for TS, we need several quality players (ie small forward, line breaking outside mid) rather than one potential star.

Side note, be interesting to see GC and GWSs strategies this off season. A potential new GC coach may trade for immediate success ala Sydney as Mckenna could be burnt for playing kids, will the trade period expose a go home factor? Anyway all to play out.

How does the bidding work? There are 2 highly rated father sons this year. The Daniher kid is in the mix at the pointy end. Can clubs bid on both or one only? Not sure it can really help us unless Essendon have an ordinary year.

It would be lovely to get Jack with a 2nd round pick but I can't see it happening.

I would be stunned and expect their to be resignations if our obligation to viney is to draft him no matter what. Our obligation should be to ensure that he is drafted onto an afl primary list in 2013. This would mean that the moment another club bids for him our obligations are wiped.

Any other outcome on a 16 year old would be crazy as any 16 year old could slide from top 10 to 3rd round by the time the draft comes around. Having said that we are in danger of getting no value from viney as a father son. if he is rated around 5 ish and 4 is our first pick we will probably end up picking him up

It's obviously way too early for this kind of talk but if the season follows the vibe of the first couple of rounds then we'll have to deal with GWS and Gold Coast. I'd give GWS Sylvia on a better than market rate and then offer to take Warnock back off Gold Coast. In exchange they'd of course promise not to nominate for Jack. Easy.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
