Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Captain and Leadership Group ... Nearest the Pin

why would you say that? Jonesy is a "happy go lucky" type of guy. It comes across very strongly each day. Waves Movies & a good feed is what he wants after a hard train.

Not the captain type. Nobody has me pegged HT and why bother? Bit tired of the civil war that goes on around here. People have differing opinions..for all sorts of reasons. Nobody on here is 100% correct although some try and ram it down your throat so hard in the hope it will stick.

I used to live with surfers back in the 80's and i assure you none of them wanted to much responsibility. A captain of an AFL side is on call almost 24/7 with media. That is not the game of Nate Jones.

So Captains of the AFL don't surf, watch movies and have a feed after a hard train ? As billy2803 correctly pointed out, it didn't stop G.Ablett Jnr doing this ? Nor Ben Cousins, nor Brett Kirk, and whilst I'm not privvy to personal lives following facebook (or is that stalkbook I wonder ?), I'm tipping there would be other captains of the AFL that are "happy go lucky" away from footy. But may do other things in their lives.

Deefence had you pegged. He is correct in saying, one has nothing to do with the other. You can still surf, eat and watch movies - it's the leadership attributes and capabilities that are suited that help define a captain, WYL.

Hahaha! Think what you like Fellas, i am a big fan of Nate's backed him up many times. He should be well in the running for the leadership group, but captaincy is not part of his DNA. If he is chosen this list has even more problems than we can even see.

I reckon WYL has arrived at the right conclusion (Jones isn't captaincy material) but for aaaaaaaaaallllllllllll the wrong reasons.

agreed, #2's a meat head

In fairness, I'm pretty sure James Hird answered, when asked what he did with his time off whilst he was captain, with "Captain stuff."

But HG, Jones isn't needing to Captain stuff at the moment, so does have time to do Player stuff on his days off. There's a fairly good chance that he will but the surfing on hold, or at least go when he isn't doing Captain stuff.

But, I guess those boxing camps down at Warrnambool that he & Beamer run each year is more of a surfing trip rather than team bonding/leadership etc.

It's certainly a ludicrous statement, but it has made me consider exactly what makes a captain.

There really isn't a set answer IMO. There are so many varying situations and variables to take into consideration.

Hawthorn's Richie Vandenberg highlights this for me immensely (and I know he's the cliche example). But he came in at a time when Hawthorn wanted to establish a culture. It didn't matter that he wasn't the best player, hell - he may not have even of been their best leader, but he best exemplified what they wanted from a player and culture.

Sometimes, a player is so good that they just have to be captain.

Sometimes, a player is such a good leader they just have to be captain.

Sometimes, a club needs a captain who can set the tone on the field.

Sometimes a club needs a captain to help mould the culture off the field.

Sometimes, clubs are lucky enough to have all four of these in an individual. Very lucky clubs have several players with these traits. Great teams will, IMO, have these traits imbedded across the team - from the eldest statesmen to the newest recruits.

We need a captain that can help mould the culture off the field but impact a game when necessary. I'm in no position to comment on the cultural aspect, but guys like Frawley, Trengove and Mckenzie stand out when I consider on-field.

The Boxing camp is what it is, and i am glad that the guys do it.

It's one long weekend a year. Not Nate's time out.

WYL, what is it, as it currently stands, that you want Jones to do? He is not Captain, and may never achieve that title. But, he is a full time footballer, and like most full time employees, he deserves his time off each week (which is probably less time than what normal employees get). In his spare time, he enjoys surfing. Does that make him less captain-worthy than someone like Grimes? I enjoy fishing on the weekend, does that mean I shouldn't be a manager?

The other thing that I find interesting about your posts on this thread is the fact you have not nominated your nearest the pin, yet you've sunk the boots in to one bloke that hasn't put a foot out of line since being drafted. I would love for you to show us all who YOU think should be Captain, and don't hide behind the old "I back the Football Department". Put ém on the line old chap. I'd love for you to throw Frawley up as your number 1 choice...

If it's Co-Captains , as is the rumour , then so be it . We really don't have a standout .

Frawley gets my nod along with Trengove and Moloney .

Watts could do with some responsibility and Garland is very dependable . Clark is Neeld's investment so I reckon he's in the leadership group .

Co-Captains - Frawley , Trengove , Moloney .

Leadership group - Watts , Jamar , Grimes , Garland , Clark , Jones , Green .

I probably need to leave 2 out but it's very difficult .

Barring injury to any of the Co-Captains the "real" leader will emerge sooner rather than later . Which is possibly the Clubs ( Neeld ) aim .

Edit 29/01 - Grimes demoted to the leadership from Co-Captain and Moloney promoted to Co-Captain from the ledership group . Though I reckon Grimes has what it takes , his not playing last year may count against him .

How have i sunk the boots into Jonesy?? He is not the captain type that is all. He enjoys free time.

And why would i want Frawley as Cap? He plays deep defense. Not what we need.

I am now leaning towards Trengove as Captain with a strong leadership group.

Again with the inconsistencies.... Trengove enjoys his free time too! He hangs around with his mates (Tappscott being one of them), and they cook meals, play x-box and have Facebook pages. Not captaincy material.

You sunk the boots in to Jonesy when you said he shouldn't be captain because he likes to surf on his day off. Note that: they get one day off a week.

Not Jonesy shouldn't be captain because of his style of play, or his attitude to training, or his ability. But because he has a hobby outside of his career.

Jones is a dam good footballer, but he is a surfer when not playing...he is not Captain material for mine....he is a great worker and servant...but loves his free time....and good luck to him.

Cameron Ling is a very keen surfer - doesn't seem to have affected his ability to lead.

Posters on here who have for years said he is at best an "average c+ midfielder" are the ones who have sunk the boots into Nate Jones, not i. He is not a natural captain nor is Brad Green, but i hope like hell that this year both play great footy for us, and i have no problem with both in a leadership group.

Yes. But does he loves his free time?

He is not a natural captain

Apart from his surfing infliction what else excludes him as not being a natural captain?

FWIW, I am not in favour of Jones as Captain but the reasons (surfing and free time) you have given make no sense whatsover to exclude him under your notional standard of " natural captain". Players grow into the Captaincy role no matter who they are. Judd, Carey, Buckley Neitz and Hird. Some have a slightly longer path than others.

You are one who thinks Jones is no more than an "average c+ midfielder" Rhino which are far more damming comments on his character than anything i have ever stated.

Your first point about sinking the boots in has been answered by others. I will pull you up on your "not the captain type" comment. Some argue that we have a leadership problem at the Club, but regardless of that, Jones was voted in to the leadership group in 2011, which I think may have helped his football. He was 23 years old when this happened - not a bad effort for a bloke who isn't a captain-type. So, as he obviously has leadership qualities, what does he now lack that would be against him in earning the captain title? As you follow him on Facebook, you must have a fair idea of how the playing group rates his leadership ability, so if you could give us more insight as to what they think, that would be great.

In terms of Frawley, I mentioned his name as I was trying to find out what your thoughts were on who our captain should be. It worked as you said that you are leaning toward Trengove being captain, so I thank you for answering my question.

I agree, a number of posters used to (and some still do) give Jones quite a deal of unsubstantiated comments regarding his ability, of which are probably more damming than your comments re captaincy. But, as most are pulling you up on, you're excluding him from being a natural captain because he's a surfer. Richard Branson is a surfer - does that make him not worthy of owning large companies???

Honestly, I haven't got Chunk as a leading candidate for the job. However, I would be more than satisfied with the decision if he were to be named Captain, knowing too well that he would lead by example onfield, and I would have no doubt whatsoever that offield, he would take to role on and be a bloody good skipper. He will be work in progress to some degree, probably less so than Trengove, but like on the football field, you wouldn't be able to knock his endeavour and commitment to the role.

McQueen, my guesstimate is if you follow 'Nate' on facebook stalkbook for 2 years like WYL does, you probably get to know every idiosyncracy and in WYL's world, therefore entitled to call him 'Nate' ...

Does that come under captain stuff ?

{I get your point though 45, it's just not all captains are James Hird}

The other thing that WYL is forgetting, as well as most others, is the fact that "Nate" is getting married soon, which will stamp out any form of "enjoying your days off"!!! After he completes his long list of household chores, it will be too dark to go for a surf, therefore allowing him more time to concentrate on doing "captain stuff".

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
