WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAMES MAGNER

From here

"Sandringham's key recruit is a midfielder of the in-and-under, hard-yakka, labour-intensive kind."

Big footy has some info here

Won Sandy's B+F, will certainly be a good recruit for Casey! In some ways Valenti and Tuck would have been safer choices because we know what they can do. Let's see how James goes.

The safer choice isn't always the best choice in the end. Who knows, we may have just recruited the next Barlow...

Sounds like we have drafted someone with a big body who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. A player that loves a scrap.

He's probably limited skills wise, but getting more big bodies into the side is a good ploy.

Exactly! With the likes of Tuck and Valenti, we know that they have already blown it at least once... with this guy, all we know is that he was B&F at Sandy and may well be ready to grasp this opportunity with both hands. Worth a dip!

Ok, here we go.

A 24 mid with a liking for the contest...

Could he be considered a chance to start 2012 in our midfield?

Good clip, looks ferocious and has a bit of struggle and grunt about him. To be honest this pick excites me more than yet another collection of skinny "project player" forwards.

loves a tackle - on the Trengove scale he will miss three quarters of the season

Not getting carried away and saying he will be as good as but i thought there was a bit of Dane Swan about him.

I rate him as a VFL player.

Would like to see how he'd go stepping up.

Definitely scrappy, dunno about the rest of his skills but the guy can tackle!

Ferocity seems fantastic! Is there a hint of Trengove in some of his tackling?

Games given to players based on "getting games into them" or on potential look to be over. A number of bigger stronger types added this preseason across all drafts.

I think it's the running style, I had the same thoughts.

i think his skills looked pretty good, its obviously only a highlights package, but he didnt miss a target and his hands were good in close.

Was also training with St Kilda during the pre-season.

He certainly has got us talking - some 25 posts compared to the single figures of the other rookies!

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
