Demonland 74,547 Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Newton's season was restricted to just 3 Melbourne matches in 2011 due mainly to injury and, after two years as a rookie without consolidating his place in the team, his AFL future seems problematic. Games MFC 2011 3 MFC Total 28 Goals MFC 2011 5 MFC Total 35 Games CSFC 2011 5 Goals CSFC 2011 13 Games CSFC Reserves 2011 1 Goals CSFC Reserves 2011 1
boydie 655 Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Newton's season was restricted cause ..., ...he's managed to have a held a contract for 7 years.
monoccular 17,761 Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Michael has never come close to meeting his promise - has always lacked any fire in the belly, whatever his skills. Must move on surely - if there was ever a skerrick of doubt, Mitch has extinguished it.
Nasher 33,686 Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 I've understood every new contract he's had - even the last one where he was clearly earmarked as a cheap option for the role that Stef Martin has since taken ownership of. That said, 28 games in 7 seasons is an incredible record and one that indicates our faith in him has been well on the generous side. Time to quickly and quietly part ways now.
Bang Bang Bang 5,875 Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Played like Superman for one quarter against North. Unfortunately one quarter in 7 years ain't quite enough. Curtains.

Could not have put it better. Well written Nasher
Carlos Danger 380 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Played like Superman for one quarter against North. Unfortunately one quarter in 7 years ain't quite enough. Curtains. It's frustrating, he has all the tools and can get the job done but only in patches. I'm pretty much on the fence with Newton, could be well worth perservering with the appointments of Neeld, Misson, Craig, etc but wouldn't phase me in the least if he's delisted.
Madness 44 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Has the talent just the ..., myself like a lot of others just kept hopin' he'd grow one but just never did... Thanks for the memories juuuuuuuuice!
Chook 15,088 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Give him a chance. He just hasn't had the opportunity to really flourish. I say we put him on a 4 year contract, just to really give him the confidence to go out there and take some speccies, which we all know is WAY more important than kicking goals.
Bring-Back-Powell 15,578 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Is 3 years away from MFC life membership.....could join MFC icons like Stynes, Lyon, Flower, Neitz etc..

These two posts sum it up perfectly for me ..... and without any nastiness towards a player who was a late(ish) draft pick and tried hard.
Jordie_tackles 354 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Played like Superman for one quarter against North. Unfortunately one quarter in 7 years ain't quite enough. Curtains. He was huge that quarter..... could of kicked like 5-6 ended up with 1 or 2 "Classic JUICE" Had 3 shots in the first 4 minutes reckon, barely anyone knew who he was, me and some other Melbourne supporter were the only ones yelling JUICE like he was a household name, loved it
Jordie_tackles 354 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 He will always have "that mark" single handedly extended his career by 2 long years, i dont know about the other 6 they just happened

Rogue 585 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 He's gone. That said, he was a little unfairly maligned. In contrary to the view that he lacked heart, his chasing and workrate were pretty good in recent games. However, he always looked like a player who lacked the confidence at AFL level to make it in the big time (regardless of whether he had the talent).
Yoda 33 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Even Anthony Robbins would struggle to muster up any optimism for this player at this juncture. See ya Juice and thanks for the memories.
daisycutter 30,027 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Has the talent just the heart of the pea, myself like a lot of others just kept hopin' he'd grow one but just never did... Thanks for the memories juuuuuuuuice! Lets be honest. Hasn't got the tools, hasn't got the passion, hasn't got the smarts. No need to gild the lily. 7 years was way more than a fair go.
demon-4-life 467 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 i will always remember for him running into an open goal against st kilda and not knowing what to do, and thus tried a snap from 5 metres out and missing it. classic juice.

If we going to be critical of the class of 2004 and Newton was pick 46, I am more disappointed with Bate and Dunn who we blew first round draft picks on. Hopefully Neeld can turn around at least one of them. I am not sure if there was issue with Newton's seven years. His resignings at the time were reasonable given the state of our list. And the last 3 years he was on minimum wages/rookie payments.

Hell -- I hadn't really appreciated that that trio, who must, sadly, be amongst the most thyped yet greatest underachievers in a long time all came down in the same shower. How really disappointing. I guess one big question to answer is -- how did we get them all so wrong in the one year, or was it some systemic inability to develop talent? If the latter, thankfully we have had a huge turnover off field and things can only get better.
