I'm just saying that at some point companies will pony up the cash for reasons that may outweigh good ROI. If there is a company with $2m to spend and they say "hey, we will sponsor two teams!" and then company TRUM and company PED each say "we have $1.5m to spend but we want to keep competitiors out of a certain market - I will offer this team the whole $1.5m," then the original company will be the major sponsor to no-one and one of those companies may be playing around in one of their favourite markets as a competitor.

Sponsors rarely get value for money, it's become more about who is not sponsoring a team when a company sponsors a team.

Half correct, half totally incorrect.

Great.

They gave Perth a club!

That's what I am saying, and all I am saying. It was a tangent from the argument we were having.

I get it RP, you don't rate the Super XV competition. From a potential sponsors point of view, they are having their logo displayed in NZ, South Africa and Australia, the latter being heaily publicised in Qld, not so much in the other states, but in NZ, it's their number 1 sport and by the jesus are they passionate about that competition.

Never underestimate Rugby in the Northern States. It is huge. Kerry Packer made a lot of his $$$ off the back of it. In Melbourne we go to games and we watch other games. Up north they watch it at home or at a leagues club.

Exposure to Advertising signs is still achieved both ways.

WYL, wow dude, you and I are so in the zone at the moment - we are agreeing on everything each other says on all topics! Thanks!

I think the point with the whole Union/League and AFL arguement is AFL hits all state markets. Us in NT, Hawks and Roos in Tasmania and 2 yes 2 teams in every other state, GWS will be in Canberra ect.

Union hit the 4 of the 5 major cities/states but still dont have the SA presence

As an AFL club and being in the AFL playground you get access to Australia, not NSW and QLD and token gestures everywhere else, you get it all imo this it why we will get a good deal over the opposition

Half correct, half totally incorrect.

Which part?

I am telling you that a major force behind companies sponsoring clubs (or anything for that matter) is to try to keep their competitors out of the market.

It's a double edged sword. It's like if Toyota stopped sponsoring the AFL, the replacement sponsor would most likely be a competitor.

Double edged sword.

I agree that the Union market is international, But NZ's population is smaller or equal than Victoria's in volume so it isnt Huge and International it is just a coincidence type thing imo.

South Africa is large in all ways yes, but a large percentage of there population live in poverty ect so in market terms you will only reach a small percentage of genuine customers in these markets imo.

Australia is possibly the largest S15 market imo in term of the people you are targeting ect as customers for a product. and Union doesnt target the whole of Australia either.

This is my view, am no expect though at all

I know, great isn't it!! I do actually much prefer to agree with people on this board, contrary to what some may think...i do not Follow Rugby, but i know a sh!tload of ANZACS do. And there $$$ are just as valid as mine. I do not even know all the teams in the super XV comp, but people north of the MCG couldn't give a toss about that

. I wouldn't be suprised if a chinese sponsorship spread the wealth, with the priviso of Incentive clauses..(september appearances) 2013 may be worth more..just a thought.

I wouldn't think Mars are sponsoring Carlton so that Cadbury's didn't sponsor them. And the fact that Ford sponsoring Geelong hasn't stopped the likes of Volvo sponsoring Melbourne (albeit not as a major sponsor). I don't think that now Hankook has stopped being a major sponsor of Melbourne will mean Bridgestone will be jumping on board straight away.

Some brands need to sponsor becuase their competitor is, I totall agree. The Nike/Adidas/New Balance/etc sponsorships are always going to be for competition sake.

I have worked for companies that have sponsored sporting clubs and/or events for both reasons RP. Some because it cut our competitors out, but other times for purely an awareness thing.

Sponsorship is always about awareness. Gotta spend money to make money. A simple but most poignant rule. The secret to good sponsorship from the client point of view is to target the right audience. This is where AFL is strong. People of all ages and types love the game. A chinese sponsorship of the MFC is good value, the amount of worth is probably being discussed now. I think Schwab will be able to put a strong case forward.....

What do you call Rugby League then Thomo?

I call it either Rugby League or League. Ruby Union is always referred to as Rugby, and they are two different sports, with almost separate supporter bases.

Normally I wouldn't bother correcting anyone on an AFL forum, but the conversation was about media exposure of different sporting codes, so the distinction needs to be made. Part of the debate was about the Reds and the Brumbies, and for WYL to express how big Rugby is up north and that Packer made a lot of money out of it, and that people watch it at leagues clubs, is incorrect.

Not trying to nitpick, just wanted to clarify it when we are specifically talking about sporting code exposure.

Sorry Thomo, I'll do the same to you. All my born and bred Qld friends call;

Rugby League - FOOTY (makes me feel dirty every time I hear them speak)

Rugby Union - Rugby or Union

AFL - numerous names, some I can't post, but generally AFL

So, when I have a conversation with them about coming around for a footy and beers night, they ask "footy or AFL?".

He asked what I call it, I'm a Victirian living in Sydney, so I don't call it footy, but you are right most do.

Farce? Sponsors include Emirates, Bankwest, ET Mining, Fugro (off shore gas), Bupa, Channel 9 and Burswood.

This "farcical" organisation has us well and truly licked for sponsorship revenue.

As a Victorian who has lived (not by choice) in Queensland for 25 years may I suggest that the majority of locals refer to the codes as -

Rugby League as League

Rugby Union as Union

AFL as Aussie Rules

This is like the Tom Scully thread of sponsorships.

Will we or won't we?

Just let the club sort it out. I'm sure they're not sitting around shaving their heads to mimic raccoons

Well, I live here now and I'm telling you exactly how it is in the South East QLD region. The CEO of the first company I worked for up here was an ex-RL player/coach/CEO and even he called RL - footy.

And to be honest, Rugby Union is referred to as Rugby a lot more than it is referred to as Union.

If you like league and nothing else you call it 'footy.'

If you like neither or both 'league' and 'union' you call them those monikers.

And you call AFL all kinds of names unless you are threatened (rightly or wrongly) by the AFL fan in your presence and you call it 'AFL' and attempt to make some cogent conversation.

I hate those conversations: because they are stupid, and they usually revolve around how Adam Goodes is a 'really good player isn't he?'

How'd you guess that, you idiot?

That is how it is done North of the Murray.

Not quite true.

There are some AFL strongholds just North of the Murray.

Good point.

I was just using a rhetorical flourish.

I guessed as much...

Are you trying to create enemies, here? I know you like that.

Whatever...

Sooo...we have named our co-captains today, yet still no sign of a sponsorship announcement. Great opportunity to announce our major sponsor too. Oh wait...we don't have one. Bugger, there goes that golden opportunity to get maximum exposure for a new investor - maybe we should've held off announcing the captain until we had someone on board.

I have worked extensively with disadvantaged teenagers in Rockhampton, with Rugby League (or footy as they call it) being the biggest highlight in their life. Or if you ask if they are going to the footy on the weekend, they genreally go and watch the Comets (or Capras or whatever they are called now).

A majority of the Gold Coast are from everywhere but, mostly southern states. I've had a number of drinks/heated discussion with people of the Gold Coast about what is the true footy, I'm always outnumbered.

A true rugby league follower call it footy. Anyone else is in the minority.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
