I'll admit 6 weeks ago along with a lot of other posters on here I was wondering when Jack Watts & Stef Martin were ever going to realise the potential they were showing only in glimpses. Fast forward 6 weeks on and wow what a difference. Both are now performing to such a level it greatly increases the dimensions of the side. Jack greatly increases the confidence with which we can go long to him in the air and he can provide a viable contest. Stef has more than proved himself an adequate back up ruckman. But there's more, with Jamar now fit again we now are able to send the spare ruckman forward as they are both able to kick a goal.We have gone from barely having any forward with strength in marking contests to now having 2. I feel this will be very important going forward and gives a lot more options

Stef and Russian are a handful too and the bear in the square allows the long bomb option creating crumbs for the likes of LJ, Green and Col.

Amazing the difference those 3 names make. Watts, Martin and Jamar. With them fit and confident we have no reason to fear any team. We may not win every game, but we have the minimum structure in that the team and fans can have some confidence in. Unlike spines with the likes of Bate, Miller etc in them. Still fine players and workers, just a bit patchy.

we still need plenty of grunt. We are currently unbalanced. Too many outside players, not enough inside players. You won't win a big final with Morton, Jurrah, Bennell, Davey, to name a few. Natural development will help some, but I'd suggest we need two less outsiders and two more thumpers.

Yes, I like the cut of Tapscott's jib. Players who win the ball by knocking over their opponent are absolutely key to consistently winning big games.

When I can get to the club shop I'm getting me a 35 on my jumper. Love watching him go.

Seems West Coast have also joined the Geelong and Collingwood " big boys " club and it doesn't appear to be doing them any harm. I also note some want to ditch the 194cm Morton??? We already have 9 at 180cm or under with Viney to come at around the same mark. Not saying they are bad players necessarily by the way, but they just can't match it physically over the full course of a game.

You can only play a few quick small outside players for balance and run ( to many and you get monstered against the likes of the above three teams not to mention Hawthorn and Carlton. Whilst the latter reckon we are bruise free , I tend to disagree, we have just been to small in a number of games and left ourselves vulnerable).

195cm+ please recruiters and 185 or under only if you find another Rioli and even then you have to cut another small to make way.

Watching saturdays replay again last night, i thought Bennell was pretty good. He is quick and can change direction quickly.

After being at the game, it is so different watching the same game through a TV screen,

I agree WYL, he wasn't a game breaker, but geez he was quick. Kid's got fair dinkum pace, once everything around him is all going to plan, he's gonna be a weapon I reckon.

Couple of times in the first Q, it was Bennell that got things moving...At the game it wasn't so noticeable.

He will be very important as our key position players get bigger and better.

Yes, I agree with that. Bennell did some good things on Saturday. His big advantage is that he can run past and/or around opponents and backs himself to get away a la Chip. Looks like he's put on condition, too, which is what I alluded to with the "natural development" point. Bennell looks as though he might slip into the "keep" column.

It remains to be seen whether he can fill out enough to be a big game player. And he probably needs to get a little more ball, too, although he does perform some tidy stopping roles.

Bennell is extremely clean below his knees too, particularly in the wet. I think he has performed quite well in the defensive rolls he has been given this year

Jeez you know what we need? Petrie... that guy's awesome.

I have a massive mancrush on that guy. He is on fire at the moment.

There isn't a team in the comp that wouldn't want this guy.

Yup. I even reckon I'd take him over Cloke right now.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
