My 3 word player analysis V Richmond

Petterd is strong through the legs and good overhead but his kicking action is seriously flawed.

He drops the ball with both hands from half way up his chest. He just has to use the ball better, particularly when kicking for goal.

Agreed, he needs to nip this in the bud otherwise he will end up like Bate. I rate Petterd very highly but this is his weakness.

To be fair, Petterd was pretty poor outside of his tackling. For three quarters I felt he was giving us very little. In the fourth I felt his workrate went up, and I noticed him harrassing a lot more. The tackling effort and his fourth quarter to me are more than enough, but I didn't think the rest of his game was very good at all.

Said it perfectly!

Just love Beamer and Jones! Two fantastic players that we can build a midfield around. Will be around for a long time!

Ricky didn't make the distance with a couple of set shots from about 45 out, that's pretty poor for an AFL Footballer. Overall i thought he was alright and his fierceness at the contest was fantastic.

Jones is much better when he has other good players around him and he's not the main attraction, he doesn't seem to try to do too much when he has support.

Strauss is working his way in to the game and will be ok, it will take a few more games but I reckon we'll be happy with the end result.

Very good observation.

Jones gets criticsed for his errant kicking but yesterday he hit some targets at long range that were just beautiful to watch his attack on the ball and stamina is fantastic - great team player

If you look at the Stats, which a lot of people don't, Strauss' efficiency was 100%, nobody noticed him, I'll take that, he is doing his job without fuss, with him and Garland at the back it looks a bit more composed, apologies to Bartram

I've been completely impressed with Strauss' defensive work since he's come into the side. Does anyone know who his direct opponent was on Saturday? Because that to me is a measure of a good defender, he did his job and we saw nothing from his opponent.

His kicking can be an absolute weapon, and so the more comfortable he gets defensively the more he'll take on his opponent and slice through half back with his beautiful kicking.

He's quietly been doing a very nice job, which is great to see after a tough first few years in footy.

I suppose the real answer here is that when he has others around, he doesn't HAVE TO try to do more than he is capable of; this is where. I think, a lot of the unjustified criticism of his game comes from. Too often he has to carry too much responsibility.

As for Petterd, yes he was quiet early in the game, but who cares... he stood up and put in when it really mattered and helped to stop the game from slipping away. That is what good players do!

Just another point about Howe, this was very good coaching, Richmond would have looked at his aerial ability and tasked somebody with stopping him takings marks, so Howe did lead all day and the team happily ignored him, leaving a space for Green, Trengove etc to work into and take some uncontested marks.......he did his job, he got rewarded with a goal

What you also didnt mention about Howe is who created the pressure /turnover for him to get the goal ? - it was Howe up on the wing. The kid works really really hard.

I don't think it was coaching. That was Howe's fourth game.

True as well although some posters think it was because it was his fourth game......I think unless somebody gets injured the forward structure won't be changing any time soon....and Howe will be past the games were he doesn't have an impact....being ironic there of course

I'll pay that.

Thought Howe worked tirelessly all day. Didn't get involved as much as against Freo, nor did he hold all his marks, but still gave us something and worked all day (unlike two other half forwards on our list).

I've got to ask. Who were the two half forwards who didn't work hard all day ?

(edit: "on our list" - ok..I know now).

The combination Green, Petterd, Howe, Watts, Jurrah and a resting Martin or Jamar can all take a mark and most excluding the rucks can apply sufficient forwar defensive pressure to win some ball and goals for turnovers inside 50. It made for a much more potent forward line - more options more to cover.

My only concern with these seven names is the lack of a true crumbing forward to snap up the inevitable dropped and spoiled marks. Davey and/or Wonna added to the mix would complement it beautifully.

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play
