He has surprised me a lot, when he got caught with the ball after trying to break the second tackle I got annoyed but most times he gets through so I have to remember those. Means Davey should be able to play forward/mid without going back now.

Great prospect this kid. Strong for his size and has only been caught twice this season. Breaks the lines and uses it well. Keep getting games into him.

Another potential gem from the rookie list. ........

Ditto what I said a week ago. Love the way he takes the game on. You could excuse him for not playing with his natural flair in his first couple of games, but it hasn't deterred him one iota.

The more I see, the more I like.

Perhaps the most heartening thing is the way he is prepared to take the game on when the opportunity presents, even if he was caught trying to do so a minute or two ago; he doesn't go back into his shell after he makes a mistake, which is impressive for a young player.

Big fan of the amateur.

To me, he is Bartram version 2.0, with the added decision-making, line-breaking and goal-kicking ability.

People hate on Bartram for turn overs etc which i dont think he does alot of but praise this kid (who i like) for breaking lines getting caught and turning it over.....double standards to teh guy who is exciting etc

bartram is underrated big time imo

Nicholson is a jet love him, like that he breaks the lines, runs takes the game on, disposal needs to come good but, no reason he cant, Ammo's to AFL in 12 months still should have a nice ceiling on him

My god.

Watch Bartram when he gets the footy in his hands.

Butchers it and makes exceptionally poor decisions, almost always.

The rest of his game is exceptional.

You have to admire our recruiters. I've seen many Amo games but have no idea how someone can watch a game and recognise that a particular player will be able to step up to AFL. Not only that, Nicho has done so in such an impressive fashion so far.

I maintain that is wrong, look up the stats has averaged better efficiency than Davey during 3 of the last 4 years according to champion data, his decision making isnt perfect but its harder to make decision in a back pocket than it is running straight through the guts, or they cost you more obviously.

I like both players just feel that Clint is hard done by, and plays a role for the team

Blease will play this week. Its just a matter of if he replaced Strauss or Nicholson

What is your reason/evidence for that?

Both Strauss and Nicholson played well in a winning team. Strauss needs games to generate confidence.

He strikes me as a player who is yet to believe he belongs.

Nicholson on the other hand demands to be picked and plays with the flair of someone who believes he belongs.

What has Blease done yet consistently that demands that he dislodge one of those two players who both also possess good leg speed?

The evidence will be when he is picked at 5pm... Some1 will be dropped for him.

Bartram is a good decision maker - he knows his kicking limitations and kicks within them - that's why his efficiency is high. He still kicks clangers but they're usually when he's pressured to reach for a target that's beyond his capacity.

The key problem is his short kicks to another unmarked defender who is also a poor kick doesn't help us clear D50. If Rivers, Macdonald, Bartram and Warnock start kicking it round to each other it's time to head for refreshments or relief.

It'll be interesting to see Nicholson's progress - he's showing something but it's early yet - Bartram's first year was really great.

Tapscott > Strauss and both expected to play similar role so suggest Straussy gone soon anyway unless he starts playing blinders.

Really? Macdonald is in that mix too. He's great competitor and has been a really good PSD pick-up but he has limitations. I'd back Tapscott and Strauss to be in our next premiership team ahead of him.

Purely my opinion old55 and i dont have anything against Strauss, he seems like a great guy on the couple of times ive met him.

However, besides the fact that I haven't seen Strauss do anything to show he will make the grade(happy to be proved wrong), they are both there as a designated kicking role and small/mid size. If you are going to keep Barts, why would you have another two short defenders?

Grimes, Rivers, Garland, Frawley, Bartram, Tapscott...if you want to put Joel Mac in that mix im not sure that there is room for Strauss.

Back 6 + 1 on the bench.

Strauss or Nicholson at this stage, and eventually both.

Pretty sure Nicholson will take Bartram's place soon.

We can't have someone who is so poor with the footy in hand playing, when there are reasonable alternatives.

What makes you think that nicholson has any sort of the defensive mindset and capabilities required? baffles me

Happy to see that come to pass. I agree with previous posters that Strauss probably isn't playing his natural game yet. Perhaps as he gets more time he will play harder, kick better.

Not complaining that our depth is improving, I just don't think Strauss would be in our best team if all were available.

You make a fair point AB that there is room for a Nicho type on the bench. Really like his style.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
