The midfield

Loving Bomber Blitz at the moment, got this tidbit from Jbomber..

"Scully, Trengrove, Gysberts & Mckenzie. They were the difference. 4 young mids all taken in the last 3 years. They along with Maloney smashed our third rate midfield. The big question is, if they can smash us with kids now, how the fark are we going to compete with them once these guys mature. Same with Richmond, Cotchin & Martin tore shreds through our midfield. These guys will only get better. We don't have this calibre of players coming through. wallbash.gif"

We got more than a glimpse at the future midfield, it looks balanced and strong and will only get stronger.

Been saying this to my Bomber loving brother for a couple of years. I call them "bagels", nothing in the centre... :)

It's not just our future midfield, it's our present midfield. These guys aren't going anywhere, they're easily part of our best current midfield. And looking at the side that played last night, the only one who may be inhibited by age when this list is in its prime is Green.

This was the second time all four (McKenzie, Gysberts, Scully and Trengove) have all played together in one match, the first being against Collingwood last year when Gysberts got injured and didn't surface again for the rest of the year. Each of them all bring something different to the table, so when added together you get a group with a heap of variety and class that should be capable of anything.

Will be a great test for the 4 of them next week , they have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. They've stacked up so far when they've all been in it together.

watching the match you wouldn't think jordie mckenzie was a rookie list player! fits in well with the other 3!

I would like to add the huge mark by Gysberts that was disallowed. His height is going to add another dimension to his game as a midfielder. The ability to get up in a pack and take a contested mark like that will be a big weapon for him. The more I see of him the more I think it was an in inspired choice by BP.

I've heard Gysberts mentioned by one of the coaches last year (can't remember who) as a possibility to go forward.

The best part for me is how well McKenzie, Trengove and Scully performed with Gysberts when RUSTY.

The former 3 will only get better with more game time.

Exciting times ahead.

Essendon have been overrated for far too long and i was rapt that we exposed them.

Let's not get into Geelong or Collingwood comparisons just yet people. But we have all the right ingredients for one of the most potent midfield rotations the competition has seen:

Scully, Trengove, McKenzie, Gysberts, Grimes, Moloney, Evans, Viney?, Sylvia, Jones....

Another thing about our "big four" (TS, JT, JMcK, JG) is that the vast majority of their games have been good or better than good. For such young mids, their consistency as individuals has been outstanding.

I was surprised to learn that this is really the first full game they've played together. Certainly didn't look like it. They're going to be very difficult to stop, and it's going to be impossible to keep all four of them out of the game.

Honestly, there has been a lot of hype about picks 1 and 2, pick 11 could be just as good as them if not better and I rate the other 2 highly. With a bit of muscle Gysberts will be unstoppable.

This will be a once in a generation midfield for our club.

So the two times these 4 have all played together we, drew with the premiers and beat the Bombers with some of our best players out injured, including Jamar.

Lloyd, who is a massive toolbag, admitted on radio this morning that this is as good a young midfield as any going around. However, the key to our success is firstly keeping these guys healthy and continously pushing them to better themselves, and secondly, keeping them together. Keeping Scully at Melbourne has to be one of our most important tasks this year.

Whilst feeling for Grimes in missing the rest of the season, I'm quite excited about the remainder of 2011. If continuity happens, where else would you want to be? :)

Damn it, just re-made Nasher's point in the other 'midfield' thread without looking at this one first. All I'll add to this one is: Good God yes, this is an exciting time to be a Dees fan!

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
