it's interesting because at the draft function C.C made it quite clear we were very keen on Melksham with that pick and seemed a little disappointed he got taken before our pick. no swaps now though thanks.

Melksham was one of their best on Friday.

Both of them have about 10 times the credits Strauss has.

That's not to say Strauss won't make it as a player, but right now, if you had to pick one, it wouldn't be Strauss (it would be Melksham IMO).

If it's a matter of needs we absolutely need a pacy back flanker with skills, Melksham is a good footballer but we need his ilk less.

He has had trouble getting continuity at any level due to injury, and his confidence was smashed early last year. He was at that time deemed good enough to play senior footy.

If he makes it he wouldn't be the first defender to work his way back after losing his S*&t early. From the little I have seen of him at Casey and the reports I have heard he is worth persisting with in the senior side. He has some tools in his kit that not many others have. Let see if he can start to use them.

I would prefer to keep the forward line:

Gawn/Martin, Green, Jurrah

Jetta, Howe, Watts

They all contribute to the press (when they attempt it) very well.

In reference to a young player making errors at AFL level, the amount of games experience adjusting to the level is relevant.

Just as the number of games at another inferior level isn't.

Both players have had the same amount of time adjusting to the speed, the physicality and the pressure of AFL level football.

You could even make a case that Evans has more recent experience, and also more experience against modern defences than Strauss, whose 2 previous games were early last season.

I think if Strauss steps up it could free up Tapscott to play midfield/forward flank. He will be more damaging for us there kicking goals & hitting targets forward of the centre. He will also be very hard to match up on as not many are equal to his size & have as good overhead ability. I can see him playing similar to the stewie dew or Chappy role in our mid rotations.

Bartram will probably displace Strauss short term. Long term I hope it's a different scenario as good kicks are gold in today's football. Kicking through or over the zone is a skill Bartram will struggle to develop & is a limited footballer IMO. I like how he applies himself but can see his place in the side under threat if players such as Strauss develop.

It was never a debate about a young player, it was comparing a third year three game player to a first year three game player. A third year player, at 21 years old with three years of coaching, who is not good enough to play more than 3 senior games, should not be compared to a new recruit. Not hard to understand to most people.
