The Tom Scully Saga

Recommended Posts

Tom Scully will sign with Melbourne. Follow this and you'll be right.

This is the mindset of a confident Melbourne supporter.

Everyone should calm down and ask themselves whether they believe the person they hope will be a great of this club.

Do you believe in Tom?

I believe.

"I'm sure my teammates have full trust in me."

This is the quote.

You don't say that if you've already signed a HoA. There's a lot of nervous nellies that post here.

Once again I feel the need to address a few points.

Why would a media personality put it out there that he is leaving when they will have egg on their fave if he stays? Surely they must know something to be saying that?

No, not really. If they put it out that he is leaving and he messes up their story and stays, they will simply deny that they ever said he was gone. Remember that one of the primary excuses many of these people have been using to justify their claims is that every player linked to GC last year went. This is 100% incorrect, but if they keep making the claim then people will eventually believe them. Likewise, should Tom stay with us it will simply not be mentioned again. They will start another self-congratulatory tale about how accurate their guesses were and conveniently forget that they had ever spread such an outlandish rumour.

Somewhat linked to the above point is the fact that GC made a play for several Melbourne players, or indeed the media said they were moving north, and amazingly none of them left. James Frawley, Ricky Petterd and Cale Morton were all rumoured to be signing with them (by the infallible media) at various times, and every one of them stayed with us.

All in all, I am disinclined to believe any of the hoard of media hacks who want to get in on the feeding frenzy and voice an opinion. There are two people who I will listen to regarding the future of Tom Scully, and I seriously doubt either Tom or his Manager will be telling us the answer until the season is over. Until then, it's all unfounded rumour ans idle speculation.

funnily enough within weeks (some cases days) all three of frawley petterd and morton signed, squashing those rumours.

This issue is damaging the club.

Say what you like, we have a 19yo player who is copping all of the media focus because he is holding out for more money (either from Melbourne or GWS).

It doesn't look good.

Shwartz doesnt know jack!

I remember him 2 years ago on SEN saying repeatedly day after day that Davey is good as gone and he resigned albeit after dragging his feet somewhat with the contract, but point is Shwab is as in the know as any one of us (which is very little). I'll trust what Trenners and Watts think of Scullys position.

Bt the way, positive signs, I saw Trenners, Scully, Watts, Tappers and Gys all out at dinner together a few nights ago. GO DEES!

But do you contend that they signed because of the rumours? It would be a poor effort by their managers if they allowed that to happen.

Let's look at another example. We had a player a few years ago shop himself around to other clubs. The rumour mill had him already out the door and signed with Collingwood. It was only during trade week that he decided to take a smaller contract to stay with Melbourne because his desire to play with us was greater than his need for more money. Do any of us hold this against him now that he is captaining the club?

Tom has every right to take his time and look at all of his options. The only thing that matters to me is whether he signs with us or with someone else.

I kick myself everytime I open this thread

Same here Jarka. It's crossed my mind to keep a list of every single person in this thread who has indirectly (or directly in some bizarre cases) called Tom a liar and name-and-shame them when Tom signs. Perhaps change all their user titles to "owes Scully an apology" until they do so one by one. But that would be an abuse of power ;)

In all serious though, it amazes me that some people actually seem to want him to be gone and cling to any rumour they can to back their possession. I just don't understand it.

But... let's just say the end of the season comes and Scully re-signs for a reasonable amount.

Has he still damaged the club? No?

Carry on.

Did they?

Or had they already signed (or even just agreed to terms, since we never actually see the signing), and the club just hadn't announced it yet, so they acted quickly to quash the rumours?

It's just damaging the nervous mindset of Melbourne supporters, and I don't really care about those Melbourne supporters anymore.

They can doubt a 19 year old all they like, but they should know that the are the ones hurting their club by buying into the BS.

I don't agree with that statement Nasher. No-one wants him gone. Where in 15 pages of this thread has anyone stated that?

These aren't isolated rumours, and now one of our own (Schwarta) has come out and put his rep on the line.

A robust debate should now begin about what compensation we should lobby for as this process needs to start now, not later.

One of our own? He's a half-journo (the half is because he doesn't actually find out anything, but he talks a enormous amount... there's plenty around).

And Nasher is alluding to this pathetic call to 'look at compensation because he is gone' mindset that is purely designed to lessen the blow if he decides to leave.

And is there such a thing as an 'isolated rumour?'

Why not sign for a reasonable amount now? Marc Murphy did.

There's no other reason to wait other than to drive your price up or go for big bucks elsewhere.

We differ on our respect for Schwarz''s opinion. Fine. I've got more time for him than you obviously.

But absolutely we should be looking to "lessen the blow" if he leaves. As the old saying goes, ' if you don't expect anything, you don't get anything'.

Could be the difference between getting an extra first round draft pick and being shafted by the AFL. Who knows ...

That is based on the premise that he's going.

I don't know one way or the other I hope he stays and would be disappointed if he leaves, but that's the way the cookie crumbles, it's his call.

I haven't read much of this thread as it's really pointless and will just go round and round till this circus over, but from what I've read there is nothing that convinces me either way and I doubt that anyone on here would have a clue whether he's staying or going. That extends to Schwarta as well, he's just as much in the dark as we are.

First and last post on here for me.

I doubt anyone in Western Sydney even knows who he is!

Or for that matter who any of these players are......

Nor do they really care at this point.

I haven't entered into this "he's staying/he's going" argument up to this point and I'm not about to....

But, this is how I believe it will pan out....

* Melbourne come out and narrowly beat Collingwood tomorrow. With Tom playing a major role in the win.

* Melbourne finish the season in 6th spot and beat Essendon in the first final.

* Melbourne makes it to a semi, but loses by 3 points to eventual premiers Geelong.

* Tom comes out after that match and says "I would just like to announce that I love this club and have signed a 3 yr deal, why wouldn't you want to be part of this?!?!"

* Scully holds a press conference with Jack Watts and Jack Trengove, announcing to the football world that it's all about flags and "we intend to win a lot!"

* 2012 membership hits 45,000 and the journey begins!

Until I see otherwise....

That is what keeps my sleeps peaceful

Thanks to the sticky I just watched the video of the Scully press conference again, and it does settle you somewhat. He really was unequivocal when he said it.

We need to take a step back and realise the huge media beatup element of this as well I think.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
