After being wooden spooners last year, the Eagles are flying! How do they improve so quickly? They seem to be able to pick themselves off the canvas and start winning and convincingly.Have they recruited more efficiently than us? They certainly have maintained a blend of experience and youth and it is already paying dividends. On the other hand Bailey has gone for his youth policy all to no avail. It is a bit frightening that Richmond and Essendon are improving faster than us at the moment. Are we ever going to get that premiership window opportunity? 2013 or 2014 is being talked about but gee, I don't know . What do you reckon? Sorry to be so morbid but the reality of another long wait is startling.

totally agree. Very impressive outfit the eagles especially over there. To do what they did today to a side thats made the last 3 prelims is phenomenal. Our loss by 52 is starting to look a little more respectable

Simple. They tanked last season.

Ummm how about because last year they were decimated by injures, and when you look at their team, they have plenty of established stars still running around. Kerr, Embley, Cox, Lynch, Glass all senior players with heaps of experience and physical development to match.

Who are our top 5 players in terms of experience, how good are they, and how much leadership do they provide?

At the end of the day the Eagles will never win a premiership with their current list. They will lose all the above 5 players in the next 2-4 seasons, and they will struggle to replace them.

I think they have something like 8 players from the 05 & 06 Grand Finals still representing, and they have grossly underperformed over the last 3 years. Fruits of those labours are coming to bear this year producing a nice blend of high draft & priority picks and premiership players and a couple of All-Australians. Pretty good recipe for a rebuild. They have a very high football department spend as well (second only to the Pies) and were an anomaly in terms of FD spend and win/loss ratio.

We don't have anything like the senior core onfield and resources off field right now. I still believe our young talent should edge theirs over time. We just need to be patient.

versus the Dees who do not have senior players of that quality at all.

Where does that leave us over the next 2 - 4 years.

Our current path suggest that we are going to be bottom 4-5 for the next couple of years

Why would guys like Scully, Gysberts, Tapscott etc want to stay.

Who could blame them, take the Money at GWS and or go home to SA.

Then we have no senior players of any worth and lost quality juniors.

At this point the eagles model looks a lot better to me.

Also look where there senior players are positioned. Full Forward, Ruck, Full Back, Inside Mid, Outside Mid.

They have great leadership spread around the ground.

May as well go and slash your wrists now then.

Look, we've got 28 players out of 40 (includes nominated rookies) on our list who have played fewer than 60 games ... including Scully, Tapscott and Gysberts. All the voluminous threads show at the moment is who is patient and who is not.

Hopefully they won't be throwing up their arms like our headless supporters are, and they've got more ticker to build Melbourne into a decent side than most supporters seem to have.

how many times have I heard that over the last 40+ years.

I agree we have what looks like a good group of kids but who is going to help them develop

over the next 2 -3 years surely not the likes of Davey.

You need a blend of senior and young players

At present we have a couple of good seniors, 3 - 4 mid range players and a bunch of kids

most of whom have less than 20 games to their credit.

I have seriously over estimated the quality of our senior players most of them are average.

We do not have one game breaker amonst them.

We are going to struggle for at least the next couple of years.

PS I have supportered this club for 51 years, i think I have a reasonable ticker.

They Were never that bad Bobby.

They was a tanking, Draft Harvesting, that is all. Building their list. And they are Much more physically developed than Us, by about 2 years osr so. And their talls are far more developed than ours.

Thats Why they pantsed Us. Intimidating.

Give Bailey Cox, Kerr, Embley, Priddis, and a ready made CHF in Kennedy then...

Yeah, you must.

But it is sad at the moment...

They tanked better than us.

Yes, everything is comparable to what Melbourne does...

Nothing ever happens that cannot be chain-referenced back to this club...

That is exactly what I am saying with a couple of exceptions our senior list is crap.

I keep waiting for the J curve rpfc

Any chance in 2012?

You have said it yourself - our senior players are not what we thought they were.

You will see consistent spirit (and the wins that will follow) when the kids grow up and take over the house.

And it could be by next year.

Hell, it could be next week.

Now we are both dreaming.

I am off for a single malt and some sleep

The sun will no doubt come up tomorrow and i will be reminded it is only a game.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
