My ideal 22 for 2011

Recommended Posts

Was interested to know everyones best 22 for Melbourne this year.

Mine:

Maric Pettard Bennell

Jurrah Green Watts

Trengove Sylvia Scully

Grimes Warnock Rivers

Morton Frawley Macdonald

Foll: Jamar Davey Moloney

Int: Gysberts Jones Mckenzie. Sub: Gawn/Martin

Maric: Has earn't a spot in the 22

Pettard: Before he got injured, this is his spot for melbourne. He proved this last year (RE: Collingwood). Better than Dunn.

Bennell: Has no presence up back. Watch the Darwin game v Port. A goal kicker.

Green: Would like to see Brad back in a key role up forward. Our best goal kicker, the Saviour.

Watts: His presence running up the ground gives us options. Will only keep improving.

Trengove: Rotation on the ball.

Scully: Same as above.

Warnock: Still has a lifeline. Plays better when Chip is around.

Mckenzie: Needs Game time, will be an improver this year.

Gawn/Martin: Spence makes me norvous.

Hate leaving out:

Bate: Tries his guts out. Can kick goals.

Cook: Needs to earn his place.

Strauss: The hardest to leave out IMO.

Bartram, Nev, Bail, Tapscott, Garland and Wona = great depth.

You have Warnock twice

Compared to your team:

IN: Garland, Bartram, Dunn

OUT: Warnock, Warnock, Gysberts

Sorry forgot Macdonald.

Your Garland over Warnock is a fair call.

Gysberts though, I think other Jordie will be a good player by seasons end./

B Rivers Frawley MacDonald

HB Grimes Garland Davey

C Scully Trengove Jones

HF Petterd Watts Dunn

F Green Jurrah Maric

Fol- Jamar, Sylvia, Moloney

Int- McKenzie, Bennell, Jetta. Sub- Howe

I think we'll take our chances with just the one ruckman first off, as Jamar is perfectly dominant like that. Dunn or Watts could do some relief rucking too.

I think it's good to have a first year player like Howe as a sub to give us energy on the bench, and i was tight keeping the likes of Bartram, Morton, Warnock, Tapscott and Gysberts out of the teeam. Wonaeamirri is still a little while off, especially with Maric preferred as the crumbing small forward for now. Bate only needed if Dunn drops out of form. If Robbie Campbell comes off rookie list he's in contention, and Max Gawn may be a chance

Very hard to do. I can see the best 22 being more like a revolving door. All the boys will need to put in on the track. Although Maric is not in my best 22, he deserves to play Round 1 after a strong pre-season.

If Dunn can pinch hit in the ruck, it could allow the Sub spot to be taken up by a midfielder.

In terms of structure and general play - I think if Mckenzie is out for a decent amount of time, we'll actually miss him more than anyone else.

2 of 3 sides do not have Jetta. All 3 sides have Jones. Do I watch the same games as you people?

Always been a fan of Jones, but with the influx of potential quality midfielders; could find himself at Casey a lot more than he'd hope for.

Martin can play forward/back/ruck, albeit, without being dominant. Still, versatility is golden.

FB: Rivers Frawley Bartram

HB: Morton Garland Grimes

C: Trengove Moloney Davey

HF: Dunn Watts Sylvia

FF: Jurrah Green Pettard

F: Jamar Scully McKenzie

I/C: Maric, Bail, Jetta

Sub: Martin

I need to add Bail and Howe somwhere.

FF: Martin, Jurrah, Wonna

FOLL: Jamar, Moloney, Scully

INT: Jones, Petterd, Trengove

S/SUB: Morton

EMERG: Bate, Bail, Bennell

Morton's the ideal Super Sub with his ability to play anywhere and being a great height to play tall or smaller. Martin makes the team purely to play as 2nd ruck. IMO one of Martin, Newton or Fitzpatrick will have to play every week to cover this role.

Picking from: (Arbitrary 10 points for the best player in the category - other points relative to that player, '?' means not really known yet):

Based on where I think they play best - obviously some players could play under a number of categories.

Backs: (11)

Key position - Frawley (10) Garland (10) Rivers (6) Warnock (5) J MacDonald (5) T MacDonald (?)

Running backs - Grimes (10) Morton (8)

Small - Bennell (10) Bartram (10) Strauss (5)

Mids: (13)

Ruck - Jamar (10) Spencer (3) Campbell (?)

Hard ball getters - McKenzie (10) Sylvia (9) Moloney (9) Trengove (7) Jones (7)

Link up and delivery - Davey (10) Bail (8) Scully (7) Gysberts (5) Blease (?)

Forwards: (13)

Contested mark - Dunn (10) Watts (8) Martin (6) Cook (?)

Lead up - Green (10) Jurrah (10) Petterd (9) Bate (6) Howe (?)

Dangerous crumbers - Maric (10) Jetta (9) Wonna (8) Tapscott (?)

I'd pick the team based on: 1. Availability (obviously). 2. Backline match ups and the need to balance run, key position and coverage of small forwards.

Therefore the best 22 each week will depend on the opposition. Injury replacement will depend on the type of player lost and maintaining team balance.

So working off our current injury list with no more injuries and taking into account pre-season form i feel the Round 1 team will look like this:

B: Bartram Warnock Rivers

HB: Grimes Garland Bennell

C: Trengove Moloney Davey

HF: Dunn Watts Petterd

F: Jurrah Green Maric

Fol: Jamar Sylvia Scully

Int: Jones Bail Jetta

Sub: Spencer (as much as i think he is useless)

Eme: Tapscott Gysberts Martin

With a completely full and fit list to choose from and using each players most recent form the side would look like this:

B: Bartram Frawley Rivers

HB: Grimes Garland Bennell

C: Morton McKenzie Davey

HF: Dunn Watts Petterd

F: Jurrah Green Maric

Fol: Jamar Sylvia Scully

Int: Jones Moloney Trengove

Sub: Spencer

Eme: Bail Tapscott Martin

Others close: Jetta Gysberts Martin Wona

Is it just me, or is Wonna looking like he might struggle to get back in?

Think about it. Smaller goal sneak players have popped up such as Jetta, Maric and Bennell. On top of that Wonna has had some personal hardships to deal with which has hurt his preseason.

I think Wonna has a massive hill to climb, and the players ahead of him are becoming valuable to the 22 on a more consistent basis.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
