Football Clinics

Fork 'em

Back in primary school we had Mark Browning from the Swans attend our footy clinic .

Was great to have a player recognised at the time as 1 of the best kicks in the league come to our school .

Remember him kicking low left foot torps the length of our modest oval , nearly knocking kids off their feet with worm burning stab passes and 50 kids running around screaming " Browning , Browning , BROWNING " calling for passes . Good times .

Also had a young Terry Wallace show up on another occasion , I only remember him talking too us and me thinking "This blokes full of himself for someone I've never heard of." Somethings never change eh . ;)

Who attended yours and did they leave any lasting impressions ?

Peter Knights worked for the Commonwealth Bank and came to our school and gave out those elephant money boxes on at least 2 occasions i remember.

Nice guy, but i hated Hawthorn so much i could hardly speak to him..HaHa :)

Nathan Burke, was interesting at the time to see him without the helmet though he didn't really leave much of an impression. In hindsight it was pretty cool to have somebody as good as Burke rock up at my primary school and from what I remember he spoke pretty well but most of it went over my head, was more interested in the kicking drills than anything else.

Garry Lyon and Stephen Newport came to my under 11's training at Bentleigh Juniors.

I got them to sign one of those coin books you got with the newspaper, you'd fill it with a coin from each club with a players head on it. Wish I knew where that went.

Gaz was awesome, I didn't pay much attention to Stephen.

Bumped into Garry in Chinatown a year later, I was copying Chinese characters and he stopped to say hello. I think he remembered me.

When we were living in Townsville the NQ Cowboys rugby team visited my eldest kids primary school. When they asked the kids which football team (rugby) they barracked for she said "the Demons!" and then took them to task for their use of the word football in relation to rugby and the various reasons why AFL is really a football code and rugby isn't

They were apparently very polite in their answers :-D

St Kilda's Bill Stephenson came to my school in 1963... somehow managed to win his autograph and gave it to my mother, who from that day on until she passed away was a Saints supporter. Also in the 60's, my best friends brother-in-law was Hawthorn's Gary Young who was a very good player up until he was badly injured in an on-field incident and never played. again.

A Young Carl Ditterich attended our primary school, & left a big impression, but mainly on our student teacher he was dating. We got told off @ our general assembly for my harassing him after school.

Ray Biffin attended my 2ndary school, in a working situation. that was a fav'''.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
