THE TOM SCULLY TO GWS THREAD

Featured Replies

There is life after Football but those that grab the GWS cash will probably disappear from view once their football playing days are over. They will have no profile in Victoria, the major football market, and no profile in NSW unless the game really takes off up there, which I doubt it will. These players will struggle to earn a good wage when they can no longer play and will just fade away like so many before them.

Players like Pendelbury and Thomas will almost certainly stay in Melbourne because the big bucks will be waiting for them after the final siren rings, Thomas has already got a bit of a media profile. Managers should point out the long term effects of moving to small interstate clubs and how they may forego a very lucrative life after football if they do.

How big a profile would Swallow have if he was playing for say Collingwood and not Gold Coast and who will care about Abblett if he wants to come back to Melbourne when he finishes his playing days with them, no one.

Football is just one part of a footballers life a smart one will continue to earn a very good living long after he retires. But will he do it in Western Sydney?

Good post.

What I don't understand is that a player like Scully is still going to make a lot of money if he stays with Melbourne, not as much but still a lot. And as RobbieF pointed out, with such a big profile in Melbourne Scully would have no trouble getting a job in a football or non-football related industry when he retired where he could earn a lot.

Easy for me to say this from the outside, however ask any retired footballer if they would prefer money or a better chance at a Premiership and they will the the Premiership any time - that is what he would get at Melbourne.

Here is a question for the legal eagles on this site. With betting agencies taking bets on this if Tom dropped to a few of his mates I'm stayig load up would this be against the AFL gambling policy?

Tom tell your mum that you are staying she can get $2.60.

In all likelihood the sec any bet over a couple of hundred is placed they'd suspend all betting.

Well, the world is a small one - Tom has moved into an apartment in the south eastern suburb (my old suburb) in Melbourne. Good possie too. About 30 mins along the freeway to Casey and 20 mins to the city.

Apparently with another girl, I would say sister.

So I guess I can corroborate part of what another poster said earlier.

This doesn't mean 'he is going nowhere' but it is interesting to note that if someone was to have already signed (as a few on here contend) then they would most likely stay at home until they go north, rather than move twice in 10 months.

Because if there is one immutable truth, it is that moving sucks...

Spot on RF , and there seems to be more in it post career if your a 1 club player aswell .

They might get a local gig being special comments during Giants games ala Bickley for the Crows but thats about it .

P.s. I wish this thread would disappear as I already swore of it a week ago but like some others find it strangely addictive.

Stop worrying folks. The only players going to GWS all happen to be clients of Ricky Nixon and therefore perfectly fit the demographics of the GWS region.

One of my favourite arguments brought up during this is the "he didn't play/travel to Adelaide...that's a worry."

Does this mean that when he plays for us, there's nothing to worry about any more?

SADLY THIS WAS THE LAST PHOTO  OF PAUL THE ORACLE OCTOPUS TAKEN SECONDS BEFORE HIS SUDDEN AND MYSTERIOUS DEATH RECENTLY WHEN ABOUT TO MAKE A PREDICTION. PAUL WAS COMMISSIONED BY AUSTRALIAN MEDIA GURU MR EDDIE MCGUIRE TO HELP SOLVE  AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALLS BIGGEST CONTROVERSY BEING THE INTENTIONS OF BUDDING SUPERSTAR TOM "SKULL" SCULLY.

JUST AFTER THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN, THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE ACQUARIUM WENT DARK CAUSING PANIC AMONGST THE GATHERED MEDIA THRONG AND TOURISTS PRESENT.

WHEN POWER WAS RESTORED PAUL WAS FOUND TO BE LYING ON HIS BACK AT THE BOTTOM OF HIS TANK WITH FOREIGN MATTER PROTRUDING FROM HIS MOUTH. IMMEDIATE FIRST AID FAILED TO REVIVE HIM AND HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD ON ARRIVAL TO HOSPITAL. FORENSIC EXPEXTS HAVE INDICATED THAT PAUL MAY HAVE CHOKED ON WHAT APPEARS TO BE A FALAFEL. MYSTERIOUS GREESY PAPER WAS ALSO FOUND ON THE FLOOR NEAR PAULS TANK WITH A WESTERN SYDNEY TAKE AWAY SHOP ADDRESS PRINTED ON IT.

POLICE HAVE ALSO RELEASED A SKETCH BASED ON EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS OF A PERSON OF INTEREST WHO WAS SEEN LEAVING THE ACQUARIUM IN A HURRY AND DRIPPING WATER AFTER HIM. DESCRIBED AS A STOCKY CAUCASIAN MALE 180CM TALL AGED ABOUT 70 WHO WAS MUTTERING TO HIMSELF AND WEARING MOCCASINS. GERMAN POLICE HAVE PUT OUT AN INTERPOL ALERT AS THIS PERSON MAY BE UNPREDICTABLE AND DANGEROUS. ANYONE SEEING A PERSON THAT FITS THIS DESCRIPTION ARE ASKED TO NOT APPROACH HIM DIRECTLY AND TO CONTACT POLICE ASAP.

So, does that meen that she's going Up as well? B)

surely after the result of the first game against the swannies(83 to 4), Tom will be saying "do i really want to be apart of this new franchise"

Keep getting belted GWS, it can only be good for us and our chances of keeping Tom

Tom will stay and we will enjoy seeing him hold up the cup in the red and the blue real soon. For those who need to know the answer now you can always ask the magic eight ball. :)

Yeah, I'm sure Tom was watching GWS's first belt out tonight. Why would you want to go to a dribble of a club. They got beaten by Canberra Under 24's last weekend. It will take GWS at least a decade before they are knocking on the door, regardless of the 4 or 5 greats they poach. Tom can stay at the D's until he wins a flag / brownlow, then go chasing money.

He will stay for sure. Otherwise he's mad!

The GWS are full of underdeveloped 17 year olds. Let's not get carried away with these on field results. The Suns are12 months and 6 top 10 picks ahead of them and still struggling to beat GWS. I do agree that it will take a couple of years for the new clubs to be competitive but with the amount of concessions they have it won't take a decade.

I am not speaking about onfield performance tonight and should have been more clear regarding my post. The GWS are a young club and yes it may/may not take a decade before they are a success, but lets get back on the topic. My post was about Scully going to such a club that has no definitive building structure. A home ground and supporters are my main concern, where is thier supporter base going to come from? The Suns seemed to be heading in the right direction when they got the go ahead from the AFL, as they have been building a foundation from previous years. Why would Scully want to go to a team that may not even be around for a decade. After all, thier concessions as you say will dry out. Scully going to the Suns for top dollars I could understand, but to give up Melbourne for GWS???

Why would Scully want to go to a team that may not even be around for a decade. After all, thier concessions as you say will dry out.

They will be around for a very long time. The AFL is well aware that this is going to be a loss making venture for many a year and is in it for the long haul.

After GWS sign their uncontracted players at the end of the season then rape the draft they will be round the mark. Not to mention they they get to sign 16 uncontracted players next year also and have already had access to the best 17 year olds. Don't worry the AFL will make sure they are a very good team before to long.

By the way Sculls wasnt watching the game tonight as he was out for Sammy Blease's bday In Sorrento.

Thanks to Sammys twitter.

Reported on Demonology that Chris Connolly at a function last night reported he had spoken to Tom and his Manager and they state they have not had one conversation with GWS.

Good enough for me. Can we please close this thread now?? 1296 posts is enough isn't it??

afl will should sit out putting a team in tassy, so in 15 years if GWS is a fail they can relocate them there....would be a perfect plan, just need kanga's to lift there game off field!

Gee one more post and we are at 1300......

There ya go.....

There ya go.....

I got in a similar vein post 1000 on the jack watts thread, but the fun police removed it

Best of luck :-P

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
