a good club environment is extremely helpful in getting flags. flags are almost a by-product (if the culture and environment is good enough)

bruce clearly didnt want to contribute to this - if he did he would have stayed one a 1 year deal and worked hard for a new contract and his place in the team.

bye bye

About a year back we had a massive thread that explored this.

I exaggerated the mission of a club.

But the statement rings true - a club exist to win flags. Good clubs win flags. Great clubs win flags, and provide a good club environment.

Everything other than success can be contained in 'good club environment.'

And we are sick of waiting around. There is only one mission. THE FLAG. With our record no one should be satisfied with any other lesser rewards

Just out of curiosity.. When Bruce lines up against the Dees next year, will anyone here be inclined to boo and jeer him? Or does he deserve an applause for his contribution to this great club over the years? I honestly don't know how I will react when he gets his hand on the ball against us next year..

I'll just be hoping that he does the usual thing - handball or kick to the opposition.

Had lost his passion to be at our club because he wasn't offered 2 years. If he was really gunna be that good for 2 more years he should have agreed to a year at a time and be really thankful. He will be missed, but not a massive loss on field, moreso as a mentor and adviser to younger players. As others have said, if you don't want to be here then go away.................... and play somewhere else.

Can't think of any other club that has gone about their business in this manner. Just makes the club look stupid - some clubs honour their champions, we just shoot ours like lame horses and do it through the media.

Would you prefer us to be like the Bulldogs and have Brad Johnson limping around keeping a good player out of the best 22 for finals? Making the club look ridiculously stupid for not realising the player is past it.

We do it through the media? You reckon that the press conference is the first contact the player has with the club regarding their future? Seriously?

By having a press conference it allows the fans etc to have some form of a goodbye. It lets the player have their say. If you haven't noticed, football media is big business now. If we didnt hold a press conference, the player would be put through interviews anyway. So whats the difference?

This is Bad.

Sure he wasn't amazing - but provided crucial rebound whilst shutting down an opponent, week after week.

He deserved more than a 1 year contract.

Giving him only 1 year meant he could be pushed out at the end of next year, even when he knew his body would still very likely be fine. Just like poor J-Mac last year. Awful way to treat him.

We forget how many games our legends like Robbo & J-Mac won us, we should be backing them in when they say they're right to go around again.

Maybe we should focus on that rather than keeping hacks like Newton around the club. I mean, c'mon. Like he deserves to share in our success?

This upsets me. Club champions should get more than 1 year contracts if there is nothing wrong with them.

Poor form Bailey.

Poor form Bailey.

If it is alright for Shane Crawford to play out his career on one year contracts after turning 30, a brownlow medalist, elite champion player, then it should be fine for good old Brucey boy.

Its common practice. The player should take it as an incentive. Obviously doesn't back his ability to make it impossible for the club to turn him down after next season.

You can be sure of this.

Our talent is 10 years younger than him and yet we are making allowances because he has been here so long.

The pattern of the club until Bailey came in was one of unbelievable respect of the club's stalwarts.

To the detriment of the club itself.

The club should be bigger than the individual, but that is our lot in the AFL isn't it. We are Melbourne. We respect our players. We don't care about flags - we just want to treat our B+ players with respect and let them play on their terms for as long as they see fit.

I'm proud to say I no longer suffer from MFCSS.

My time on this forum shall from here on be devoted to promoting awareness of MFCSS and working to cure it.

Mostly through education, insight and enforcing my correct views on others.

Enjoy.

Seems strange many can't grasp a sime tenet . The MFC is all about creating a club who's structure and mantra is about sustained success , excellence in competition and ultimately the grand reward , premierships .

In doing such it's not going to deliberately sabotage it's efforts by denying the club the talent and the services of such where possible . Some would have it the FD is somehow cutting off it's nose to spite themselves . The FD will maximize return wherever able but temper such enthusiasms with prudence and common sense . In this light had Bruce been worth a 2 year deal he would have been offered one. He wasn't, therefore he didn't warrant one.

I'll trust the FD ... again !!!

No doubt.

West Coast with their treatment of Judd when Cousins ran from the booze bus....

Essendon with one of their all time greats in Mathew Lloyd was pensioned off as Captain....

Adelaide with their treatment of Tyson Edwards.......

Geelong with their treatment of Gary Ablett over the past twelve months....

Do you want more??

Good player. "Champion" sits uneasy with me. B&F in 2008 - a year to forget.

Collingwood with its deplorable treatment of Fraser, O'Bree, Lockyer, Medhurst and fify goal a year Jack Anthony dropped out of the side in favour of youth and now no longer at the club. Neone Leon was shopped around as well with no takers.

Shameful conduct.

But they got a flag out of it, which is what has blinded agent orange.

These things happen in a game no-one wants to leave.

We are on our way to the promised land and there will be many sacrificed along the way to get there.

But they can enjoy it as much as the rest of us.

I only want the FD to be honest with all players - tell them the truth and they, and we, can make decisions accordingly.

All 5 sides that can rightly claim to have made more better decisions than we have over the journey, unfortunately including Collingwood.

Brucie wanted to stay at Melbourne. The club was not prepared to committ. Don't blame Cam. The club virtually pushed him in the same way they pushed James.

he walked !!!... wanted more $$$$ and captaincy !!!!

The way Bailey has gone about it over the past few years has been pretty poor.

Great servants of the club who have been burned:

Jeff White - great servant of the club

Addam Yze - gave his all

Robbo - gave heaps to our club

McDonald - did us all proud

Now Bruce

Surely apart of the clubs heritage is to recognise those who have served our club well in a dignified manner. The chopping of Robbo, White, McDonald and Yze were anything but done respectfully.

The Demons have done well in fixing many areas, they need a bit of work done in the football department.

You know what all those players have in common. None of them have a Premiership Medallion. Well played MFC. When you play a hard sport you need to play hard.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
