The leaked emblem ...

Yeah, look, I see what you are saying and that was my initial reaction too, but it was only momentary.

To be honest, it has frustrated me in recent years that symbols of national pride have been hijacked by racist morons.

Unfortunately this is a common problem in other countries - I know in the UK they have suffered the same with the St George's Cross being linked with the nationalist movement.

If there is a way to overcome this, it is by reclaiming these icons for nobler causes.

I think the MFC is one such entity.

Well said.

I don't like the Southern Cross on the logo. These days the Southern Cross is too easily associated with the low-life scum that had branded themselves with it during the Cronulla Riots. The Southern Cross might have meant something years ago, but its meaning has been tarnished by the filfth who have it tattooed on their skin.

That was my point.... Not a fan of the Southern Cross in there. That is why I wanted to wait until it was presented by the club so we could hear the story behind it before making a judgement. FFFFAAARRRKKKK YOU HS!

hammer - nail - head

close to the best thing ive read on demonland.. although there is most likely a more deeper connection that ties it to the MFC, but what you said is more than enough for it to have its place in the emblem

australia's oldest sporting club, with australias oldest symbol! (don't know if thats right, but it should be!)

I appreciate what all of you are saying about the southern cross, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but honestly, that is almost my favourite element (actually i like the whole damn thing).

As an expat, now living away from the homeland, it gives me shivers to see it on the emblem. and no i don't have the cross tattooed anywhere on my body.

showing my friends, and i find it gives the emblem even more of a reason to be proud, of our great country, and our great football club.

theres history, and theres promise for the future.

make comments on whatever you like, but i love it, and cant wait to hear the story behind it. im just sorry the club didnt get to do the great reveal.

How dare people say the Southern Cross is a cheap Emblem.

The Southern Cross is part of Australia, and also part of the Australian Sky.

The Southern Cross will out live all of us, as will the MFC-and i for one am very proud to have the MFC & the Southern Cross united-I haven't seen the new emblem yet, but please don't put the southern cross in the Cheap Basket. When you leave Australia for more than a couple of weeks & you see our Flag, it means so much.

We Aussies travel everywhere.

I love the whole thing. History and tradition with a modern edge. I wouldn't change one bit of it.

Yes, well they do say that travel broadens the mind.

I find that often the opposite is also true.

Look, I don't really mind it, I just don't like the Southern Cross. Maybe there's a reason, maybe it's related to the players/officials we've lost to war as the flame is, but I just don't like it.

It's without doubt better than what we've got at the moment (the square).

Why would I try to find something wrong with it?

The first thing I saw when I looked at it was the Southern Cross. Doesn't make me think 'Melbourne'. The rest does.

Think 'big picture' here people. The club wants to position itself as one of the great sporting clubs of the world- a fantastic aspiration imo. Hopefully one day the MFC itself will become entwined with the actual identity of 'Melbourne the city'. Barcelona FC being one example of this.

Think bigger than 'Melbourne'... we needed an iconic Australian symbol on our emblem.

Is there a better symbol than the Southern Cross? Uluru? Sydney Harbour Bridge or Opera House anyone?

We will never become like Barca.

Barca not only share the city with one other bigish top flight club, they also galvanise their supporters by representing Catalonia and use the catalonian flag as part of it's emblem and their desire to be their own country.

We are a club with the name of the city that shares the community with a lot more clubs and do not have the hatred of being occupied by another country.

An excellent emblem.

The criticism I have seen:

Too busy - This is what the best emblems are; rich and meaningful.

Has the southern cross - Why shouldn't it? Because racists like those 4 stars? Should we then take it out of the national flag?

Doesn't have the Demon - It has a trident? Is that not enough? Do people not infer anymore? Are we so dumb and numb that we can't be subtle, or do we require a blunt demon face scowling at the front? Perhaps a demon from BtVS will do? Perhaps Angel can be the demon? The girls will like that - David Boreanaz as our emblem...

I realise some of the older posters will be confused by that last part and to them I say - buy the DVD boxset.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player w

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
