  1. the one thing i hate about living overseas is missing footy season. tell you what i am so so so glad to not be in melbourne right now!!
  2. Actually the history of a grand final replay goes back way beyond the AFL/VFL was such a business. Don't disagree that they will be salivating over the dollar signs that undoubtedly come with it, but $$ isn't the reason behind the rule. There's a hell of a lot of organisation that goes into a granny, but instead of the whole season, they now they only have one week! Think the AFL may be paying a fair bit of overtime this week... So yes, the $$ are good, but it's gotta be less than ideal for everyone. I guess no-one thought they'd ever have to deal with it. and i dare say it will be another 40 years before it happens again.
  3. welcome HT time zones aside... i love d'land... its my connection back to the real world. being so far away from it, this is the first year ive gotten into these forums (always read, never contributed-- and it seems my contribution is only for small things like timezones!) but im so grateful for it. sometimes i wish i could filter it, but i read most threads. keep up the good work, lock out the d'heads and GO DEES!
  4. yep, that would be it, considering im in california. didnt think it did that as 'land is obviously an australian site. crossed my mind but didnt realise! dont i look like a dill now. cheers for clearing that up madness... righteo, til the next blonde comment...
  5. basically irrelevant to the conversation, but the date stamp on the article is March 21st, 2010, yet this thread began on March 20, 2010....??!
  6. this happened to me. i wanted to change and follow the dawks. dad said hed never take me to games... 20 consecutive years of mfc membership to date. it works. i highly recommend it.
  7. Hey guys, in America, and our Aussie sport tv has been commandeered by two Adelaide supporters. Would appreciate updates as they come. GO DEES!!!
  8. ditto to that. apologies for the slightly pathetic post on my behalf, but dandeeman and LS really said it all. it makes me so so SO proud to be melbourne. when i was much younger and first started following football, i told my dad that i think id rather like to go for hawthorn (my best friend went for them, and they were nothing short of successful during those years). he told me that i was more than welcome to do so, except he wouldnt take me to any games. that was enough of a reason for a 5 year old to stick with the dees (i got to have chips and donuts at games, and got a free pass to say words like 'idiot') but in heinsight, i wouldnt change a thing. even tho the dawks have a flag, and we've been thru a few lean years, the culture and excitement and the beginning of a new chapter in history thats building around the club-- i wouldnt give it up for anything. tell them we're coming...?? i reckon we're here! GO DEES!
  9. also an dees supporter living in america. i left the week after we lost by a point to the filth. i was there for the tumultuous years. and NOW i leave. im super frustrated at the fact that i cant watch games anywhere, theres hardly anything online, for free at least, and at one point, i could watch the 'game analyser' thru the tipping comp on the afl website, but now it seems its only allowed for people in australia. it p*sses me off. but i love the dees, and have thoroughly enjoyed the beginnings of rising this year, and ill stay up til all hours of the morning streaming the live radio feed. and if im still here, and we make a gf, you bet your bottom dollar i will be qantasing it home! i can empathise with your pain about americans not understanding the game ("australian football" "ohhh you mean rugby?" "no i mean australian football") but im lucky enough to have found a source to not only get my fix of aussies, but also a whole bunch of americans who WANT to learn about the game. theyre excited by it, and the sport is growing exponentially here. in im northern california, and we have a great league (golden gate australian football league), and a number of spin off rec footy comps which are co-ed. nationals will be happening in kentucky in october. i know its not the same as watching the mighty dees play, but it goes a long way to filling the gap, and actually having someone to discuss AFL with, and watch games with. we are having a grand final function at one of the sponsor pubs in sacramento, and they are playing the game on every tv they have! where theres a will, theres a way. and there is definitely a league in orange county (we played against them a few weeks ago) and there are plenty of leagues all across the country. i would suggest checking out www.usafl.com... good luck, enjoy your last months here and GO DEES!
  10. I appreciate what all of you are saying about the southern cross, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but honestly, that is almost my favourite element (actually i like the whole damn thing). As an expat, now living away from the homeland, it gives me shivers to see it on the emblem. and no i don't have the cross tattooed anywhere on my body. showing my friends, and i find it gives the emblem even more of a reason to be proud, of our great country, and our great football club. theres history, and theres promise for the future. make comments on whatever you like, but i love it, and cant wait to hear the story behind it. im just sorry the club didnt get to do the great reveal.
  11. That game is also my single most favourite stand out memory of supporting the melbourne footy club. I was 15, and a kid who wore my heart on my sleeve for the dees (still do!) and took everything very personally. (I cried after the one point loss to north at the dome). I remember being in the old red seats, near where the cheer squad used to sit during the home and away games, about at the 50m arc, and being surrounded by typical obnoxious carlton supporters, carrying on about "PORTER". I remember being upset when we were down in the first half, and them not shutting up. Then greeny took a mark out just about in front of us on the boundary line (its at 1:48 of the highlights video link in the OP), and he was looking around to pass it off and this indigenous man a row or two in front of me stood up, completely silent, and simply pointed towards the goals. it was like greeny saw this guy, because he settled, went back and took his kick and slotted it! it was the turning point. the obnoxious caaaaaarlton supporters didnt have much to say by the end of it! such a sweet sweet victory! i also have a strong memory of after the north game, walking down the ramps in the southern stand, and the entire crowd was singing its a grand old flag all the way down. such camaraderie and love for this great great club. i truly felt a part of the melbourne family i live overseas now, but if melbourne makes a gf while im here, guarantees i will be on the first flight back! maybe not this year, but we are coming! great thread, thanks for providing space to share our memories!
  12. are we hurting for lack of forward line? kicking only 6 goals speaks a lot about delivery from the midfield.. but 6.10 also may indicate no goal kicking potential? we cant be proud of our depth when there's none in the forward line. it seems we were hoping for consistency this year, and we haven't achieved this today...
  13. what is happening?! not liking the AFL match centre... hmmm. dees where are you?
  14. jtv is only showing the bullys and sydtown. in the us of a. not happy. want to watch. please keep me up to date on the match day thread please.
