Roy & HG have been floating Gold Coast Stink for a while, think it would sit nicely, they're also suggesting the GWS Laughing Clowns.

Don't think Suns is American but I think it's more a basketball name than a football team name, seems a bit weak, so I guess it's perfect for GC17.

Gold Coast Suns aint too bad. We will get used to it. Port Power was pretty ordinary! But it doesnt seem to be a problem.

I would have gone for 'Gold Coast Ironmen' myself. A Red and Yellow (or gold like the Hawks) jumper with light blue shorts. Similiar too South Australia's origin jumper would have been the go. Colours that is. Not style!

As for Greater West Sydney. I would go for the 'Great West Sydney Two Blues' or in short 'GWS Two Blues'. To get fans on there band wagon there colours would be obviously Dark blue and Light blue. A take off of the Rugby Leauge State of Origin colours. Fans would love it! The NRL would love that! Ha Ha! So would Izzy being a Queenslander. Suck it and wear it!

i hope they dont have a nickname. let the nickname happen in time, like most of the vfl ones did rather than force a mascot on everyone. itll mean more and be heaps better. the coasters is probably the one that will develop but something else might. its the only chance that club has of having an element that isnt commercialised from the start.

edit: shouldve read the whole thread first.

Does that mean Gary Ablett will be the Prodigal Sun?

Had to throw it out there.... :)

That's a future HUN headline for sure!

Suns is fine. Not just relevant to America at all. Sharks would've been good but never a chance due to Southport.

Maybe you could put forward a better suggestion for GC.

Well, kerrydixon ?

Ok then the ' GCAFO ' Gold Coast Afl Franchise Outlet . Maybe McDonalds colours with the McDonalds clown as a mascot. I'm sure McDonalds wouldn't mind there're nearly as commercial as our AFL. The supporters of this pretend football club could dress up as McDonalds clowns on match days. ' Go clowns 'could be heard all over the Gold Coast.

It's not as ridiculous as it sounds. Us dumb Victorians accepted the AFL and gave away our football league with barely a whimper. We now watch advertisements after goals are kicked in Perth or Adelaide. We don't miss going to the footy like we used to every second week because we have all these products to buy at bunnings et al etc.

One of my pet peeves is when the word "americanised" is used.

The last time I checked, the Sun did not belong to the United States.

The Atlanta hawks of the NBA (previously Millwakee/St Louis)were named in 1951. The Hawthorn Hawks of the VFL/AFL were called changed to the Hawks in 1942. Did the NBA aim to "Australianise" the NBA? Do we own the right to the name "hawks"?

Any team can call themselves whatever they want. It is just sport, and a team name is just something to build an identity. It has nothing to do with any other teams that may share the same team name.

wrath child, what about calling them the gold coast 49ers then? some things are associated with american sport. same as something are associated with aussie sport. i think one of the differences is that most of the vfl team nicknames evolved with time, rather than christened at birth, which meant the names had more meaning.

choosing a very 'franchise' type name, of which i believe 'the suns' is, gives the team a bit of a manufactured vibe (which it is).

Um, Deanox the 49ers makes NO sense for an Australian team due to its historical relevance! San Fran are named the 49ers due to the gold rush in San Fran during 1849. Naming the gold coast 49ers is just plain stupid, and goes against the entire argument. The "Suns" is just as kitschy add on to a city, with no historical reference to anyone who uses it. It is up for grabs for anyone who wants to use it, and anyone who has a problem with this need to get of the "anti usa" soap box and accept that it works fantastically for a gold coast team.

'Suns' is not American FFS!!!

You prove the point wrathchild you probably know more american history ( especially sport ) than any other country in the world. The reason of course is that they own most of our TV coverage and have done so since the 1950s. Ok we have Murdoch but last time I looked he became a yank so he could buy in there. And dude if you don't think we are americanised listen to an aussie crowd when they appreciate something whooping like they've got something stuck up their collective clackers... need I say it, just like in the movies.

Correct. I agree with you Wrathchild, that it works fantastically and is up for grabs.

It may be a kitschy add on, but it has historical relevance with respect to the Gold Coast itself. I mean, who doesn't really associate the "sun" with the Gold Coast ? Seriously. ie. Beautiful one day , perfect the next.

Fancy that, fancy anyone associating it with America anyway...

It ("suns") has more relevance than the "titans" and what any other sport in the gold coast precinct have served up.

edit: kerrydixon - have another try.

And as for the VFL going national. If you think the sport should have remained unchanged back then, I'd cringe at the thought of what aussie rules might have become in today's sporting culture.

The NBL franchise are called the Gold Coast Blaze I think?! I don't mind that!

I'm a member of both the GC17 and Dees and spend time in both for business reasons.I think it'll be referred to as Gold Coast by most people and so it should be from a marketing perspective, the more people that say or think "Gold Coast" the better.GC17 has 8,000 members so far, which astounds me as there's no benefit of being a member this year because the GC games are free to get into anyway, although there is "Foundation Member" status which gives you the right to choose your reserved seat next year in the new 25,000 seat stadium. My GC mates are members of the Dees,Hawks,Dogs and Tiges and we're all GC members but when the GC play our "1st" teams,we all hope we [censored] the GC.Kind of strange but i won't be leaving my Dees behind and will wear my Dees jumper at Carrara for Dees V GC,to funny looks from GC members,i don't care i'm a Dee for life!!!

To that poster that wrote "people just want the easy life by the beach on the Gold Coast",well unless you're retired or won lotto, nothing is easy no matter which part of the country you live in,you still have to work your AR$E off to get ahead and to provide the best life you can for your family,no matter where you live.Sure it's great waking up to a 23 degree day in boxer shorts and singlet everyday, when it's 7 degrees in Melbourne,3 degrees this morning, but if you work hard anywhere, you'll see the rewards and for me that's boating, golf 3 days a week and surfing at Snapper Rocks and D'ba a few mornings a week or taking the Mrs. for a drive down to Byron for the day. It's a great lifestyle up here, but i'd never say it's the easy life.

Go Dees!!!

Good on you Jack7. Btw, I wouldn't mind waking up in boxers and a singlet in 23 C after this morning in Melbourne ! (*teeth chattering*)

But hey, I wake up each morning in the Sporting Capital of the world. So I can't complain.

:)

WIth regard to those 8,000 GC members. May I be so bold as to ask if you know the avg. membership cost of those 8,000. ie. Is it $160-$170 full memberships, or is it just a sign-on-membership at minimum cost ? I'm interested to know.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
