I think what that really means is that they are definitely aware that Garland has some ability as a forward, and just like Brian Lake, Adam Hunter, Dustin Fletcher and many of others Garland could be the guy who gets moved forward when you need a goal or two to win a game, or when injuries to forwards during games happen. But by the fact they keep playing him as a defender I really think that's where they will keep him as long as he holds his spot there. Cheney will have to take another spot in the starting 7 defenders.

Exactly, and Garland could well be capable of pinch hitting as a forward on the occasional circumstance.

But I wonder if Eade ever has ever had the bright idea to put Lake as a permanent forward so he can develop one of his NQR defenders playing at Williamstown?

Maybe Eade is looking to bring back Wade Skipper as CHB for the dogs???!

Yeah not good examples here Steve with Bennell, he started forward from this year because he wasn't cutting it down back as the current settled line up has. I would almost suggest that had Jurrah and Sylvia been there from Rnd 1, even Tapscott possibly we might not have seen Jimmy in the seniors. Couldn't call that experimenting or development because I doubt you will ever see Jim return to defense anytime soon.

We need a forward - it could be time for Garland. That goal against the Pies on QB from 55 was all class.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea - he's a booming kick and a good runner.

But, I don't see it happening this year. This is something that will need to be worked on during the pre season.

Considering that we're playing the Saints who currently don't have many talls in their forward line, this week might be a good time for him to play forward. We're also unlikely to beat the Saints, so I reckon it's worth trialling.

He's been giving away far too many frees in defence this year. 17 against while only 4 for. This needs to be addressed if he's to become a good defender.

I wouldn't mind trialling him forward later in the year.

Rhino, the basic problem is that the better Demon players at Casey are all in the backline. Cheney is going great guns, Strauss is coming along nicely and MacDonald even kicked two goals from the half-back line on Saturday. Cheney's defensive work is first rate and I would promote him next week. To do this something has to give, as he is an out-and-out defender. For me, I would send Grimes to the midfield and replace him with Cheney. Failing that, did someone mention Bruce?

I think Bruce is near fininshed-great post above,I agree whole heartedly.Either shift Grimes to the guts,Bruce to the wing and Cheney in.It must be heart breaking for a young man like Cheney not getting a go.

Its called part of the life of an AFL aspiring footballer. Every fringe player goes through it. MFC should not be a charity

If Bruce is near finished then its no good trying to "hide" him in a midfield position.

And if Grimes is seen as better suited to playing off the HBF then so be it. If you think of the potential midfield of Scully, Trengove, Blease, Tapscott, Morton, Bail, Davey, McKenzie, Beamer, Jones, Bennell (and a future Viney) with cameos by Green and Sylvia through the midfield I not sure you can just keep stuffing players in there.

All just to accomodate a player from the VFL who is not deemed good enough to command a role in the side on merit.

Just so you know Rhino.

Due to time constraints, I am unable to reply to every one of your rebuttals.

It seems you have far too much time on your hands and for that, I will let you enjoy

my lack of response.

It's cute that you get a kick out of replying and criticizing so many posters on this site

for thinking outside the square sometimes and proposing ideas. It seems you will only

jump on board when the FD do. Sad really.

I enjoy reading your band of merry men also, (Nasher, Enforcer and co.)

It's enjoyable to read posts that give yours a tap on the bum.

Keep them coming.

Regards.

You have time to respond to that post but not any of the others. You even had time to respond to a post to specifically say that you didn't have time to respond to his posts. Insecure much?

Tee hee.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
