The following players would be worth rookie listing imo:-

Andrew Hooper - joint 2009 Larke Medalist;

Mark Hutchings - WA u18 state captain who played well for East Perth league side;

Joe Dare - versatile highly rated key defender;

Dylan Grimes - hopefully like his brother;

Kayler-Thompson - Perth midfielder who always plays well in the league side, reminds me of Priddis and Ballantyne at how they were overlooked for years;

Roland Ah Chee - played well in the championships, appears to have talent;

Myles Sewell - for obvious reasons - b&f for VFL in 09, brother of Brad, worth the risk imo;

Mitch Thorp - key forward that we require, has plenty of talent

personally i would recommend that we take sewell and thorp, but i would be happy scoring any of the above for free

thoughts?

Dude, no rookie spots left......

Meesen and Newton have them allocated unless they are picked up by another club.

Grimes, Daw, Panos and Thorp would be nice, but we are just not in the market for rookies this year.

fingers crossed they get picked up then cause i think they are shite

On the (very) off chance that Newton and/or Meesen get picked up by other clubs, I would like to see players like Daw, Patrick or Grimes being picked up. Thorpe as an outside chance depending on how his foot looks (I'd take him if he were fully fit). Daw and Patrick in particular look to have a lot of raw talent and could be seen as long-term investments, which is precisely what the rookie list is for.

edit: slight typo there.

We need another option up forward. I wish they had've bitten the bullet and given Juice Newton the chop and maybe took a punt on Mitch Thorpe.

A guy like Thorpe is more talented and would be a good acquisition if he could get his body right.

Thorp has injury worries with the foot like Meesen. We dont need either of them and we dont need Newton either.

We should have two rookie picks.

One would be a name like Grimes, Patrick, Daw, Panos and Dare. The other would be a player that slips or a smokey BP might want to giva a chance.

I expect Patrick to be taken by the Dons and Daw by the Roos. I think Grimes is possible a GC Pick 1-5. But one of the above woud surely be better than Meesen and Newton.

Is it official or just a verbal agreement that means nothing if the club decides to change their mind?

We've got to pay the players out if we don't resign them as rookies.

We've obviously still got pick 6 in the rookie draft anyway, which we'll use to pick up one of them, and pick 23 to pick up the other.

Unless the highly unlikely situation occurs that GC17 picks up both Meesen and Newton, none of those guys are going to end up at Melbourne.

I guess the only point of discussion is which one is picked up with pick 6, so that we can decide who is more valuable to the club, or alternatively, who is more likely to be picked up by another club.

Posted
It would be nice to have both Grimes brothers at the club and that will only happen if GC17 takes Newton or Meesen.

But wouldn't it be great?

Unfortunately I think Essendon will choose between Dylan and Joe Dare in the PSD.

We may never get a chance to take him...

Well If not picked up by any clubs those names will still be there next year in the national draft in whcih Gold Coast have all the pickings - if good enough they stand a better chance than previous years past overs in getting a second (or third look).

1. Gold Coast, 2. Gold Coast, 3. Gold Coast, 4. Gold Coast, 5. Gold Coast, 6. Melbourne Demons, 7. Richmond, 8. Fremantle, 9. North Melbourne, 10. Sydney Swans, 11. West Coast Eagles, 12. Port Adelaide, 13. Hawthorn, 14. Essendon, 15. Carlton, 16. Brisbane Lions, 17. Adelaide Crows, 18. Collingwood, 19. Western Bulldogs, 20. St Kilda, 21. Geelong 22.Melbourne Demons

rookie draft order as listed

For the obvious reason, of all of the drafts that have taken place in the AFL over the last 20 or so years, this next one, (PSD and Rookie), holds the least interest for me. In fact no interest at all.

Take a gamble and pick Panos, the hell with Newton..

The club has set itself the goal of dealing with it's list with total integrity. This attitude goes completely against that. We will make the tough desicions when required, but we will also honour all contracts we enter into.

What about the PSD - Richmond ?

    Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

    BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

    Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
