Excellent news.

With only 8 months talent to choose from + GC having first 5 picks in rookie draft, this a good move.

Might as well use National draft picks then rookie picks.

With Rhys Healey, Jordie McKenzie, Daniel Hughes, Jake Spencer, Michael Newton, John Meesen, Jmac and Bruce, we've got our full quota of rookies.

1,2,11,18,34,50, PSD1. That's the stuff.

It wouldn't supprise me if a club used a late pick to get Meesen.

Thought this myself and can't say I would be too happy with it. We've invested a pick, time & money into him, to lose him for nothing when I assume we have demoted him because of injury as much as form would sting. I wonder if clubs view all these players as fair game or if there is some expectation of co-operation.

Pretty sure you are right.

As is, removed from the primary senior list are: Robbo, Wheatley, Whelan, Newton, Meesen, Buckley. And Bruce elevated to veteran.

Therefore 7 picks. 1, 2, 11, 18, 34, 50, PSD1

Correct me if Im wrong.

Makes you wonder who the MFC is going to get to nominate for the ND ?? If , hypothetically you had a couple of semi-smokies...and wanted them.. you could take them earlier than many other clubs could afford to. Something of a risk.. but maybe workable. Its a gamble -undersstod.

Did you have anyone in mind?

Maybe Dylan Grimes

or Jurrah's cousin?

As i understand it... the rules allow for them (Meesen, Newton ) to be automatically rookied if no one selects them. We dont need to use any ND selections to retain them...( if still there ) This frees up all ND draft picks.. and we have free rein with PSD1.. Looking good :)

We gave pick 38 for him. And he has been at best ordinary at MFC and terrible at worst. He is currently with a LT ankle injury.

Why would any Club chase a player who after six years cant crack a game in even the worst club and has a body that cant handle AFL?

If he was not contracted in 2010 he like Newton would have been delisted this year.

I suppose the romantic notion is Patrick. ( for one ) but as the MFC is want to do they keep all these lil secrets to themselves and only spring them come selection time. of course by then the list is out and any anomalies will be apparent. its about when other clubs can afford to use their choices.

Keep in mind 34 and 50 are our 5th and 6th choices..Some clubs are barely out of the starting blocks at 34 and would be looking at a different caliber/level/type of player with their first couple of picks. We might be able to claim them ( whoever they are ) before others have much of a chance.

We have looked and spoken to Patrick by all accounts

does anyone know what the money situation is??

presumably, if we rookie them, then they play out their current contracts. But if someone else picks them up then are we forced to pay them out?

They play out their current contracts as a rookie or at another Club. Check the mature rookie thread.

As far as Meesen and Newton go they remain on their contracts...same money...just are on Rookie list and not the main. They would still need to be elevated to play ( as i understand it...and Im wrong sometimes.. )

wouldn't they have to be paid out of their contracts, then put on a Rookie contract? In which case financially they are better off.

GC17 have the first 5 picks in the Rookie draft.

Pick 50 in the National draft > pick 6 in the rookie draft.

This is great list management.

Newton and Meesan both are very outside chances of becoming quality AFL players. Meesan more likely, but he is injured with stress fractures.

Drafting them in the rookie draft means we still these the possibility of them making it and the demons benefiting from that! Plus, now we get 2 more picks in the ND

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
