Jamar and Rivers gone

Firstly, let me say that I don't believe the rumour although it could be based on some of the facts that have already been speculated on in various parts of the media.

Secondly, if we do get rid of a ruckman then the news is that apparently, Mumford of Geelong is out of contract and the Cats have salary cap problems. They may be willing to do a trade.

There, you can add that to the rumour file!

Port will be getting pick 9 from Hawthorn for Burgoyne, and are desperate for a ruckman. I definitely think they'll trade that pick on in order to acquire one.

That's assuming the Burgoyne deal goes ahead. That's not guaranteed.

The overall situation, if the Everitt deal goes ahead as well, would be:

In: Everitt, Westhoff

Out: Rivers, Jamar

Upgrade pick 18 to pick 9

Whether you like that or not depends how highly you value Rivers and Jamar. Personally we'd lose out of this. I rate Rivers very highly, and Jamar was beginning to show a bit, and Westhoff is a dud.

Which Westhoff is Justin?

Played 50 games for Port....

Has kicked 76 goals

Had a pretty big first year in 2007.... Where he played 16 games and kicked 34 goals.....

But I still think this is not a good deal for Melbourne..... Unless Rivers is not as highly required/respected as I am made to be aware....

Port can keep their cult figure "The Hoff"

I will only say this once.

Jamar and Rivers are off to Port Adelaide.

In return pick 9 and Justin Westhoff, you can expect an annoucement as soon as tonight or tomorrow morning. This is locked.

I hear Everitt is coming to Melbourne for pick 18 which looks certain to happen but I can't comfirm this one.

would prefer to keep Rivers, than obtain Westhoff.

No idea if this is true or not.

Lets say some how it is.

Getting pick 9 is fantastic.

18 if sort of useless anyone as there are standouts.

Lets not forget with both these players we get 5 years or so on each player to improve them to whay rivers and jamar were and we get pick 9.

But who knows it could be all crap.

would prefer to keep Rivers, than obtain Westhoff.

Bad luck deals can't be lob-sided just for us.

this would actually be ok with me.

Pick 9 and 11!

That would be Talia (replace rivers)

Butcher/Panos, key forward

Everitt is pretty good for pick 18 and westhoff can play ruck, 199cm

I don't understand the theory behind replacing Rivers with Talia being a good thing. Rivers is a near superstar getting back to form and we get rid of him for an unproven kid? Bad trade if true.

I find it hard to believe that an announcement would be made on a Sat night or Sunday..... Doesn't this strike anyone as a strange time to announce something??

I don't think this is true. If it is though, I think it would be madness. As another poster (forget who) posted on another thread, what's the point of just collecting draft picks at the expense of our few mid-20's players with a bit of AFL experience under their belts? The kids are going to need a few older heads in the 22 to lead them into the fray and help them develop into the future leaders of the club. I see no point whatsoever in this trade.

Remember that draft picks below about pick 5 are pretty hit and miss. Anyone remember Nick Smith, wasn't he a top 20 pick, and Lamb?

Hang onto Rivers I say, he's the defense captain of MFC going forward I reckon.

Westhoff is basically the same build as Jurrah only nowhere near as exciting. He and pick 9 is too much of a gamble for these two Demons.

i'd hardly call Rivers a superstar, in my opinion he is fourth in line behind Frawley, Garland and Warnock.

Talia is the u18 AA CHB

Where do I sign?

Indeed.

Jamar for 8 or 9 is very fair, although we'd then want to find a mature ruck somewhere.

I think Rivers is over-rated atm and I thought Westhoff was promising, although I haven't seen much of him others say he's not much good.

isnt Andrejs Everitt supposed to be a highly rated young ruckman? wouldnt he be handy? or is he overrated? i dont know much about him

According to an article I read, Everitt pinch-hit in the ruck for one game and this has helped his prospects with other Clubs.

I thought he was a tall-but-not-KP defender. In that case we might feel Rivers has less value to us than he otherwise might.

i would prefer to hold onto rivers and Jamar

If we ditch Jamar we will have to deal with PJ in the team and i am over that unless we are tanking..

..rivers is a gun.. our back line is becoming the best it has been in a long time.. we need to keep rivers as the other tall with warnock..it doesnt make sense getting rid of him when he is becoming good

plus we keep trading away players.. what message does that send to our team? no wonder davey was so keen on a 4 year deal.. if we are ditching anyone over the age of 25 id be worried too!!

To good to be true. Rivers hasn't had a kick in years, is slow and injury prone and clearly the most over rated player on Demonland and Jamar who even though he was more promising this year he still rarely gets out on the park and has done nothing his entire career. I would do that trade just for pick 9 Westoff would just be a sweetener. I don't rate him but he averages about a goal and a half a game so he's worth another chance. Play Martin where he should be at CHB and if we can get Mumford problem solved and we suddenly have 4 picks in the top 11 I would definately like that.

Last year there were similar posts going around saying how it was confirmed that we're agreed a deal for the big Setant, and yet there he was in the pre-season kicking his Carlton teammate in the plums.

Seeing the McLean rumour a day early and it turning out to be true was the first time ever I've seen something so wild speculated about on the internet before coming true.

Cats more likely to keep Mumford and ditch Blake (who I wouldn't touch with a barge pole).

Agree 100%

The Cats are a bit [censored] off at Blake for how he handled himself after the GF win.... His comments regarding Steven King etc...

And Bomber Thompson has openly said that they are looking forward to The Mummy continuing to develop..... They rate him pretty highly down there...

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
