I heard him on SEN late this morning talking about the draft- the radio had bad reception was dropping in and out, but I thought he said that the draft was strong till the 8th pick then drops away. Did anyone else here the interview and can confirm or deny please

Didn't hear it today but on Thursday they had an expert on i didn't catch his name but he said there is about 40 good prospects in this years draft and its not as shallow as its made out to be.

He also said Majak Daw was still probably more of a rookie chance than a selection but wouldn't be surprised if he went late.

Apart from that just spoke about the usual players up for top5. I was at work so didn't catch it all.

Spot on and he also said he thinks drafting has been a joke over the years and this year he believes there will be more trades than ever before..

And what is the bet he is the first to ring the house of some unknown kid that misses the draft and then gets rookied and comes good. Jeez, drafting must be an easy game. Why are we paying the recruiters in the first place? We could just go off Emma's list and be done with it.

If they did that then Tom McNamara would have been selected 40 places in the draft earlier. Drafting is a much more exact and sophisticated art than that!

Thanks Hannibal for putting me right- Gee it must be a very, very weak draft.Dermie must have Hawthorn's view and that is why they are chasing any legs out of contract.

Thank God for McMahon and our experiementing and we have two of those picks. Of to the TAC finals to llok at the current players left-however, on the info above none will be picked up by us. Want to have a look at Carlisle. He didn't do so well last week.

Yeah I think the general gist of the conversation was that the high quality players in this draft will match it with most years, but the middle to lower quality players won't. From that, people have decided that trades will be more likely as draft picks will be less needed. But look at it the other way: if the draft is weak, draft picks lose some currency, and become less valuable, meaning it becomes harder to get a trade happening. Maybe.

I thought that was probably amongst the more relevent things he had to say .

To say drafting is/has been a joke is somewhat farcical and hypocritical given his line of work and speed with which he can get his pen out to sign kids Not all of Ricky's judgement calls are quite on the money Hows them taxis and trams huh !!

Back to trade week ..... whilst the gamesmanship of some players is just that , in order to raise the awareness of their true ( or interpreted ) value ; there will be a lot more foot traffic come this October by sheer weight of numbers in exodus of their clubs. Many ( players ) have , quite rightly I suggest, appraised the impending climate of uneasiness as a result of looming GC and WS and decided now was the most opportune to roll the dice.

Some of what Nixon says must be taken with a view to his interests. He would much prefer a system of player selection that contributed more to his own revenue streams

An aspect of the looming draft to be taken into thought, for mine is that whilst genuinely shallower than many past I dont quite concur that it necessarily means it will peter out quite as quickly as some suggest. The 'thinness' of the draft comes about because of the change in age criteria for this years draft effectivley cutting out 4 months of otherwise fruitful ( or not ) pickings. I tend to keep in mind these are the youngest of the crop and even if they were to still be included the vast majority would appear much further down the draft list than the completion of at least the 2nd round. So to say it is cactus after 6, 8..10 etc is pure bunkum. The older kids are still there and there is still quite a bit of talent according to many observers right though the first round and beyond. Later 2nd round and 3rd rounds will be a lot more speculative i would think than many previous years. But even recent drafts are full of speculation past the generally agreed upon "prospectives"

What it might prompt some clubs to do is not chance there choices too late.. In past years a particular type of level of player might not have been picked up til round 3 or 4 . This year the same types will go a round (at least) earlier as teams darent gamble too much.

Some recently moved on players might chance their luck in the draft as well simply as they migh tgarner interest where none would be had with more of the younger kids present.

It will be a rather active end of seasons this year. Personally I enjoy this time. Its a game..
