Daniel Rich is poised to win the NAB Rising Star. Other Journo's have pushed for cases such as Bombers duo Hurley and Tate Pears. Patrick Dangerfield, Andy Ottens, Callan Ward and Dayne Beams are others mentioned.

I wish Grimes had of played more games.....

I'm tipping Rich to win.

SuperFooty is tweeting from 2:20pm for updates...

Any news or discussions on rising star, comment....

It would be a disgrace if Rich didn't win. He has been a real standout and must be making several recruiters a little nervous for letting him slip to Pick 7.

Out of the others mentioned Dangerfield, Ottens and Hurley should all vote well. The first two for consistency and Hurley has shown good form and promise very recently and will be fresh in the judges mind.

Mark Robinson has tipped Tate Pears. He's been good, but as good as Rich has all year? C'mon.

People must be seeing something in Pears that I have missed....

He's played Full Back for 22 rounds. He's played on the likes of Fevola, Brown and Bradshaw. He's beaten a lot of them. He also gets his fair share of the ball and works himself into Essendon's rebounds. He has no fear in playing off his man, and sets up inside-50s by running out of defence. And he can kick OK too.

All in all, playing FB is harder at age 19/20 than playing midfield, and he's done a very good job of it in his second year of AFL football.

Amazing really. But the thing is, he's hardly been spoken of until now. It seemed every commentator has been on Rich all year. Until now.

I'm sure Robbo has seen him play alot anyway..... <_<

Rich has won it, by the way.

Good on him. Congratulations to the Lions...again. What is that 3 times for them? Rich, Buckley and Scott?

Grimes didn't get a single vote.

Total votes

Daniel Rich 45

Andy Otten 30

Tayte Pears 28

Dayne Beams 10

Stephen Hill 9

Callan Ward 9

Patrick Dangerfield 4

how can Grimes & Jurrah (and even Hurley from the Bummers) not get a vote.

No problems with the top 3 but I think our men will be much better players than Dayne Beams.

That means Rich got 5 out of 5 from all 9 judges. A bit surprising, that.

Grimes is unlucky not to get a vote, but there's a lot of talent in the crop of players nominated. Hill maybe got a few too many.

Otten was consistent, but I dont see anything that makes him a standout.

Pears looked OK, nothing outstanding to be honest.

Beams was inconsistent - Good when on however.

Hill showed glimpses of promise - Went missing frequently.

Ward impressed late.

Dangerfield is a classy prospect I expected him to poll more.

Very unlucky Jack but I'm sure he wont mind.

That's not a suprise at all imo. He was the clear standout I thought. It takes most midfielders several seasons to get anywhere close to his skill, fitness and composure.

Much harder to give the remaining votes though.

Grime probably needed to play more games and spend time in the midfield to have polled some votes. Right or wrong, there is a perception that the small defender/rebounding role is the easiest to play in modern football. Grimes is more than that, but unfortunately didn't have many opportunities to show it due to injuries.

The same role the runner-up played?

Ottens didn't play as a small defender. He was more 2nd or 3rd tall defender I thought. Very much like Rivers imo.

Listened onSEN - Segment on Jurrah sounded really good. Will be telecast on Ch 10 Sat night after the game. Should be worth watching for the Jurrah segment.

Jurrah eligible next year??

Played under 10 games.....

Too old, but it's OK, because he'll win the Coleman instead ;)

Grimes not getting any votes is a bit strange, same for Jurrah, but at the end of the day these awards mean nothing. Rich is an outstanding player, but many of the players who didn't score a vote, or even a nomination will go on to be better players than some of the guys who finished in the top 5.

You can also be sure that someone like Beams wouldn't have got a single vote if he played for Melbourne this year, but Grimes and Jurrah would have got plenty if they were playing for a top 8 side.

Just for comparison sake, does anyone know where Morton finished in the Rising Star and who the top 5 were in that same count?

What a rubbish award.

Still don't even know what it's judged on. More meaningless than the Brownlow.

Only Rivers got a mention!!! he was the last unanimous winner in 2004!!

Clearly Rich was best performer all year of the weekly nominees. Neither Liam or Jack G played enough games to be in contention.

Does not matter for MFC as the award is for the performances in 2009 only and does not nrate or take into account their potential. Both Grimes and Jurrah have a lot of upside which is what is important for MFC!

Hope Rich has better luck than Riv has had since being unanimous winner in terms of getting on the park!!

I think its the 3,2,1 Brownlow style voting system that makes it rubbish. There is no scope to reward all nominees throughout the year as all the scribes vote like sheep especially when there is a standout like Rich. They should have to vote 10 to 1.

Neither here nor there. Congratulations to the kid and everything, and it's a sign that he'll be a quality player like the names that have come before... but it doesn't reflect at ALL on the names that didn't come up.

A bit of fun fluff... like the Brownlow only less tradition and meaning...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
