Pick 5 - Sydney what would it take to get this

The more I've looked at the draft order the more I think ... if we could get that pick ... our draft day could look like

2 quality mids ie Scully Trengrove

1 quality tall ... outside chance Butcher may still be there!!!!

So in that theory what do you think we need to do to get a deal done with Sydney?

I was thinking using Pick 18 and package a player

As much as Sydney want to stay up the ladder and trade for current players, with the GC coming in they would be mad to trade their 5th pick. I think it would be very difficult to get.

I think it would take nothing short of a miracle to obtain pick 5 from Sydney.

Especially considering they don't have it.

Sydney's first pick in the draft is pick 6.

They wont be trading this pick - they're looking to rebuild.

I'm not so sure, they've shown a lot more faith in trading than drafting in the past. I can't remember them ever having done a "from-the-bottom-up" rebuild either - if they did, they'd risk losing a largish chunk of their supproter base while they rebuilt, and they can't afford to do that with GWS18 coming. And it's terrible timing to be starting a rebuild this year, even though they have had a number of important players leave one way or another this year.

But you may be right. In which case if they are rebuilding they'd have to be trading FOR picks (first or second round), rather than trading AWAY picks - picks 6 & 22 and so on aren't going to give them nearly enough.

They would probably want either Grimes or Morton and pick 18.

There was some talk they were interested in Miller and Valenti. I am not advocating trading Jones, but Jones, Miller and Valenti and maybe a swap of late picks could get the deal done. I personally think Jones has improved a lot this year and is a much better player than previously. He is getting his disposal off and kicking the occasional goal.

If you did the deal you would want to be sure that the player you drafted was better than Jones.

Which would be pretty stupid on our part.

We "buy" Morton for Pick 4, then two years later when he is on the verge of stardom, "sell" him (and Pick 18) for pick 6? We go back two picks and lose two year's development?

No thanks.

This is more in line with Sydney's preferred way of going about it IMO. They're getting 3 known quantities for one unknown, and they'd think they could get more out of Miller than we can (might be right too). Valenti & Jones are the sorts of players they like, and while both have tons of upside (for them), they may struggle for game time in what will be a very competitive midfield (for us).

On the one hand, I love both Valenti & Jones and wish we didn't have to give up players of this calibre and type. On the other hand, realistically if we want such a huge prize as a first round pick, it's going to have to hurt real bad!

Nobody will be giving us another first round draft pick. Let's be realistic. Unless we want to trade a Davey or a Grimes, we won't get a 1st rounder, especially given our current draft situation.

Grimes or Morton and 18 for Pick 5? In this weakened draft?

You are going to far the other way. Jones would do it by himself. Almost.

I was saying what they would probably want.

What value would you put on say Nathan Jones by himself, rpfc?

I don't like speculating on current players but if Nathan were keen to move and we agreed we could ask for a pick between 8 and 12 in this draft.

Any other draft and it would be 12 and 18 using my rudimentary math.

Jones and 18 might get 6 if Sydney are looking for ready made players.

As much as I love the guy I'd rather Brock was offered ahead of Jones.

Excuse me, why on earth would we want to trade for pick 6 anyway?

I don't see any reason to, beyond the frenzied desire to collect draft picks of people who have little understanding of list development and the AFL system.

I'd liken it to the bloke who had 16 kids just cos the bloke next door had 15.

Brock McLean, Neville Jetta/Jamie Bennell and pick 18 for pick 5.

Lets give them pick 2 while you're at it.

One of the few trades that gets put here that actually screws MFC rather than the other way around.

McLean and 18 for Pick 6 is not the greatest deal for us.

That one you have is abhorrent.

We're not Fremantle.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
