Position: Inside/Outside Midfielder

History: Jack Trengove is a tough, fit (15.4 beep test) and determined midfielder who is currently captaining the South Australian under 18 side. He is a consistent performer and is certain to go in the first round of the NAB 2009 AFL Draft. He is even being talked up as a 'smokey' for the number one selection behind Tom Scully.

Trengove has shown an ability to get the hard ball on numerous occasions but importantly can use the football well by foot- often sneaking forward for a goal. In fact that is one of the traits that has him in contention for the number one draft pick, Trengove can rotate forward and set up play when the ball hits the ground or use his strong over head marking to gain possession before it does.

One of the attributes I really rate is Trengove’s ability to have an impact when the game is still in the balance. It seems to me the hotter the contest is the more you’ll see young Jack obtaining first possession of the ball when in the middle or taking a tough over head mark when he is playing forward.

A good draft camp is required for him to knock Scully off number one draft pick favoritism but I’d be stunned if Trengove doesn’t go in the top 10 picks.

i like that...only need to look at carltons midfield...quality midfield....and it's young.

Indeed. I picked these two pics to highlight the importance of quality kicking off both feet. Scully is most capable too.

Can anyone name Melbourne's current players that can kick on both sides effectively? If so, the floor is yours.....

I think Watts is fairly reasonable on his left. It probably jumped out at me though because i'm not used to seeing too many using both feet. You raise a valid point.

For what it's worth I think Trengove is our man.

Oh and I'd be pretty disappointed if we didn't draft Trengove. As long as we can convince him to stay in Melbourne, pick #2, please. If he was a Melbourne boy, I'm sure more of us would be saying draft him. As things stand, most of us are saying that anyway.

Reminds me of Trent Cotchin kind of.

Way he runs with his hips and low gravity running style...

Talented to say the least.

How tall is he?

I have been more impressed with Trengove than Scully so far, but I haven't exactly studied hours of footage of both. In my most likely uninformed opinion, Scully seems more of a 2-3 years down the track sort of player where he will eventually become as dominant as Judd has been for the last few years. Needs to hit the weights a bit and get the kicking as effective as the handballing. Trengove seems more like a Daniel Rich with his build and the way he goes about his footy, he will make an impact as soon as steps onto the park at AFL level. That's why I want him so badly as the #2 pick, because if we don't get him I can see him ripping it up for another club come round 1 next year and that would really suck.

Scully has probably more outright talent.. but Trengove is ready to roll... both are the preferred option !!

I tend to agree with that, Scully will ultimately be the better player, but Trengove is more likely to have an immediate impact.

Scully is still very small and despite being sublimely talented, isn't likely to be having a huge influence on matches until his 2nd or 3rd seasons, realistically. While i'd love for him to plug in in round 1 and dominate off the bat, it's just not going to happen given his size. I'd liken his game similar to a G.Ablett Jr, but that's against kids and he won't be able to play that way against the best and strongest in the biz. Will spend a lot of time on the forward flank and wing next year you'd think, and probably play between 14-18 games.

Trengove would be a good bet for the rising star next year, as he's likely to slot in in round 1 and never lose his place (ala Joel Selwood). He's as close to a shoe-in to play all 22 games in his first year as anybody, barring injury of course. Is ready-made and will make any club that drafts him very happy straight away.

He is a must get at pick 2. The more i read and see of him the more i am impressed. I believe we have the making of a developing forward line, the backline is settled and its time to get the elite midfield MFC have been dying for for years

size has nothing to do with it...your talking about a number one pick...he actually has awesome skills

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
