A good contributer against poorer opponents goes missing when needed most against the really good defenders. Give Jurrah, Watts and bate a season or two to play with one another and work out each others games and that forward line with Wonna, Sylvia, Marric, Davey with be very exciting

Yup.

I saw the future today up forward....Jurrah and Bate. Enough said.

No need to go overboard.

Robbo has often outplayed some very classy opponents. Ridiculous to claim otherwise because he's at the twilight end of his career.

Over the course of his career he has indeed got some fine scalps.

But which classy opponents has he beaten in the past three years?. And its because he is at the twilight end of his career.

One more year for Robbo, I reckon.

Macca should retire though, and replaced by Bruce on the veterans' list.

I can see the point about stealing valuable game time from youth, but we need the experience up forward. And he's such a great clubman.

Exactly where I was going to go. He's given Scarlet a couple of lessons over the last few years for one. Not many can say that. He's been a great contributor for a number of years, but I can't see him being offered another contract at this stage. Once again it comes down to whether he is going to contribute to our next premiership tilt, and the answer is no.

Robertson was a solid contributor during our last "thereabouts" period. He's 30, well past his best and has trouble keeping his spot in the bottom team. He can't be kept to guide our younger players because the example he sets is not what Bailey is trying to instill in our new recruits. Personally I can't think of a good reason not to bring another 18 year old onto our list with an eye for the future. Remember it is here that this club has failed in the past and can ill afford to anymore. This is not meant as an insult to his career.

That's a No from me.

No.

I don't want to be another Richmond and keep old players signed up just to be loyal. His time has passed and is no longer needed. That's the reality of football. We can't afford to resign players who we know won't be around when we win our next flag.

"goes missing when needed most against the really good defenders."

That was the quote. He's in the twilight of his career and as such has not beaten many quality opponents (he did beat Scarlett this year). My point is that he is at the twilight of his career and it's ridiculous to claim he "goes missing when needed against really good defenders" just because he hasn't for the last few seasons. Mind you, how often in the last 3 years has he been "needed."

2005 round 20 7 Goals

Since then Scarlet has been quaking in his boots

Ok, lets put it like this:

At whose expense? Which player with the majority of their career ahead of them are you going to delist so that Robertson can have 1 more year during which the club will not be in contention..?

If anyone can give me a decent answer to that question, then i'll change my mind.

It's already been mentioned, but he did give Scarlett a hiding when we played them at the G this year. Was in his comeback game too IIRC?

Still a NO from me though.

Did you see his last attempt on Scarlett :o

Because it is not true. In fact it was the opposite case when they recently met. His record against Geelong since 2006 has been nothing to write home about. He did kick 7 in 2005 at KP. Was he on Scarlett that day?

Regardless his best was 4 years ago. A good career thats in its twilight.

Doesn't mean he didn't beat him the first time Roost.

And RR, you're either ignoring where I'm coming from or somehow can't see it. My issue came at the comment: goes missing when needed most against the really good defenders.

This is being perpetuated because of his last 3 seasons, but we should not hold these above the previous 9.

Scarlett played as a carefree loose defender and was not made at all accountable by Robbo and just dominated. I worry you missed it.

While he did kick 3 goals, Scarlett had 22 possessions that day and was instrumental in setting up so many attacks.

You still cannot understand the argument that a few poor years at the end of his career does not make this statement "goes missing when needed most against the really good defenders" correct.

Simple really

No one is holding it against him, its just a fact of where he is at right now

We have to when considering the current question

You're wasting your time.

For me, Robbo should bow out at the end of this year and retire on a high. He deserves nothing less because he has been a brilliant part of our club for over 10 years and, despite what some people would have you believe, has always stood up in big games against good opponents when we needed him most. He carried our sorry arses over the line many times, even when given the role of key forward, which he clearly is not.

It was fantastic to see some vintage Robbo on display today. That's how he should be remembered.

This is slightly more than perplexing.

If you're arguing against me, you're arguing with the statement that Robbo "goes missing when needed most against the really good defenders."

You do not have to consider his past 3 years when considering this "question," because the first 9 years of his career he was a talented forward who beat many quality defenders in a side that made 6 finals.

It is also not a "fact of where he is now," because a comment like that spans a career - not the final 3 seasons of a career (with 13 games lost in one of those seasons due to injury).

I'm not saying he should play on, I'm saying that it is ridiculous to state that he is only good against rubbish teams and "goes missing when needed most against the really good defenders."

I make it the most recent 3 to 4 years which is a decent period to form a reasonable assessment of a player. Simple as that.

And its the most relevant period in considering Robbo's future.

Glad you realise that he did not beat Scarlett after all this year.

........ has always stood up in big games against good opponents when we needed him most. ...... even when given the role of key forward, which he clearly is not.

Sorry he hasn't in recent years. And he has played as a key forward. That just highlights how much you miss.

Did anyone hear Cam Bruce being interviewed today and when asked about Robbo he hesitated and then said that it would be great for Robbo to get a full preseason and that his type of injury takes a long time to get back. I'm wondering if Cam is putting forward an argument that he should be given one more year.

The title of this thread is Robbo being signed.Thats the question.

And I have already acknowledge he some scalps to his name. But both in the past 4 years (not 3) and at times in the other periods he often does go missing against big name players. So the comment does have some validity. And your effort to argue that it does not apply is uninformed and not true. So if we put the word "often" at the front of the statement you can relax.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
